Gulmarg pony operators seek curb on tourist vehicles in Green Zone

Gulmarg pony operators seek curb on tourist vehicles in Green Zone

Baramulla, Jan 22: Ponywallas operating in the tourist resort of Gulmarg have raised serious objections to what they allege is the unrestricted entry of tourist vehicles into the Green Zone up to the Bowl area, warning that the practice is harming both their livelihoods and the fragile ecosystem of the region.

The aggrieved ponywallas said allowing vehicles beyond designated parking areas has disrupted traditional tourism-related activities and poses a threat to Gulmarg’s environmental balance. They claimed that thousands of families dependent on pony services, sledging and allied work are being adversely affected.

Vice President of the Apni Party, Ghulam Hassan Mir, also expressed concern over the issue, saying there was growing resentment over the administration’s decision to permit tourist vehicles direct access to the Gondola base and other key locations. He said the move threatened the livelihood of nearly 5,000 families dependent on traditional tourism activities in the area.

President of the Ponywalla Association Gulmarg, Tariq Ahmad, said the decision has serious implications for both employment and environmental conservation. “From ponywallas to sledge operators and labourers, around 5,000 people are associated with this trade. Allowing vehicles into the Green Zone effectively deprives thousands of people of their livelihoods and puts immense pressure on the fragile environment,” he said.

Ahmad said Gulmarg has two designated parking facilities—Stand 1 and Stand 2—at the main market. “Until two years ago, all vehicles were required to park at these locations. Over the past two years, however, vehicles have been allowed to move beyond these points without proper regulation, affecting the charm and ecology of this world-class tourist destination,” he said.

Drawing a comparison with Ladakh, Ahmad said protected zones elsewhere strictly prohibit vehicular movement. “In Ladakh, tourist vehicles are not allowed beyond a certain point. Local labourers and registered operators ferry tourists further, which ensures livelihood for locals while protecting the environment,” he said.

He added that while tourism had witnessed a slump for several years, the recent increase in tourist arrivals has coincided with new challenges for local service providers.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer, Gulmarg, Tariq Ahmad Naik, rejected the allegations, stating that vehicles are not being allowed into the Green Zone. “Tourists are only permitted to use their vehicles to reach the hotels they have booked. Separate entry and exit routes have been created to ensure smooth traffic movement. The allegations are baseless, and a proper mechanism is already in place,” he said.

New Delhi, Jan 22: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday issued a fresh notification authorising census officials to collect detailed housing and household information across the country as part of the Census of India 2027.

The notification, issued by the Office of the Registrar General of India, empowers census officers to gather information under Section 8(1) of the C ensus Act, 1948.

It supersedes an earlier notification dated January 7, 2020, while safeguarding actions already taken under the previous order.

According to the notification, census officials will collect data through the houselisting and housing census schedule, covering a wide range of structural, demographic and amenity-related details of households.

These include identification particulars such as building number and census house number, along with information on the predominant materials used for the floor, wall and roof of houses, the condition and use of census houses, and ownership status.

Household-level data to be collected will cover the total number of residents, name and sex of the head of the household, social category status, number of dwelling rooms, and the number of married couples living in a household.

The notification also mandates collection of information on access to basic amenities and services.

These include the main source and availability of drinking water, source of lighting, access to latrines and their type, waste water outlets, bathing facilities, and availability of kitchen and LPG or PNG connections, as well as the main fuel used for cooking.

In addition, census officials will record the availability of consumer durables and communication facilities such as radio or transistor, television, internet access, laptops or computers, and telephones or mobile phones including smartphones.

Data on ownership of vehicles – ranging from bicycles and two-wheelers to cars, jeeps and vans ñ will also be collected.

The notification further specifies that information on the main cereal consumed in the household will be gathered.

Mobile numbers may also be collected strictly for census-related communications, it clarifies.

The order states that census officers will collect this information within their respective local jurisdictions from all persons, as part of preparations for the nationwide Census 2027.

The notification has been signed by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan.

The Census of India is one of the largest administrative and statistical exercises in the world, and the forthcoming 2027 Census is expected to provide updated insights into Indiaís housing conditions, access to amenities, and household characteristics, which are critical for policy planning and welfare interventions.

Markets rebound after 3-day slide on easing geopolitical tensions

Mumbai, Jan 22: Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty rebounded on Thursday after three sessions of losses, tracking gains in global markets after US President Donald Trump struck a conciliatory tone on Greenland and hinted at a good trade deal with India.

Besides, a mild recovery in the rupee and a correction in global crude prices supported the domestic markets, traders said.

In a volatile session, the 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 397.74 points, or 0.49 per cent, to close at 82,307.37. During the day, the benchmark surged by 873.55 points, or 1.06 per cent, to hit an intraday high of 82,783.18, but failed to sustain higher levels due to selling pressure at elevated levels.

The 50-share NSE Nifty rose 132.40 points, or 0.53 per cent, to settle at 25,289.90. In the intraday session, the index appreciated by 278.25 points, or 1.10 per cent, to hit a high of 25,435.75. The trend clearly showed weak follow-through buying at higher zones.

“Buying interest emerged in the market following positive global cues amid signs of cooling geopolitical tension over Greenland. The EU nations agreed on a framework for control over Greenland with US President Trump, following which the US rolled back plans to impose additional 10 per cent tariffs on certain European countries.

“Further, there is renewed optimism over the India-US trade deal after Donald Trump’s positive comments on the agreement at the Davos Summit,” said Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd.

Among the 30 Sensex constituents, Bharat Electronics Ltd, Tata Steel, Adani Ports, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finserv, Asian Paints, Power Grid, Sun Pharmaceuticals, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IndiGo, Hindustan Unilever, HCL Technologies and NTPC were the gainers.

On the other hand, Eternal, Titan, ICICI Bank, Maruti Suzuki India, and HDFC Bank were among the laggards.

Indian equity markets ended Thursday with moderate gains after paring early advances, supported by positive global cues and easing geopolitical concerns.

“Sentiment improved following US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal of tariff threats against the EU and his optimistic remarks on a potential India-US trade deal, which encouraged short-covering and risk-taking,” Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, said.

India emerges as fast-growing hub for medical value travel

New Delhi, Jan 22: India is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing destinations for Medical Value Travel (MVT), offering a blend of world-class medical infrastructure, skilled healthcare professionals and cost-effective treatment, complemented by traditional systems of medicine and holistic wellness practices. From advanced surgical procedures to long-term wellness therapies, India provides an integrated healthcare ecosystem that is increasingly attracting international patients seeking quality, affordability and trust. Globally benchmarked hospitals and renowned specialists are supported by the Ayush systems, which add a strong preventive and wellness dimension to the country’s medical tourism appeal.

Highlighting the global relevance of MVT, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said India views medical value travel and health workforce mobility as vital for a “healthy planet”, underlining the country’s long tradition of holistic and preventive healthcare through Yoga, Ayurveda and meditation. To strengthen global confidence and quality assurance, the Prime Minister launched the Ayush Quality Mark in December 2025 at the Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine, providing an internationally aligned assurance framework for Ayush products and services.

Union Minister of State (IC) for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav said India’s strength lies in its integrated healthcare approach, stressing that medical value travel is driven not just by affordability, but by trust, quality and outcomes. Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha added that standardisation, digital facilitation and international benchmarks are key to sustaining global growth.

Data points to strong momentum, with international patient arrivals rising from 1.83 lakh in 2020 to over 6.44 lakh in 2024, led in part by growing demand for Yoga, Ayurveda and wellness-based therapies.

Policy support, including 100% FDI in medical infrastructure, insurance coverage for Ayush treatments, adoption of global standards and the introduction of a dedicated Ayush Visa, has further strengthened India’s MVT ecosystem. With quality benchmarks, visa facilitation and capacity building converging, India’s medical value travel story is increasingly shifting from cost advantage to global trust in integrated, evidence-based healthcare.

Iltija Mufti protests proposed Bijbehara-Pahalgam rail line, warns of livelihood loss

Iltija Mufti protests proposed Bijbehara-Pahalgam rail line, warns of livelihood loss

Anantnag, Jan 22: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Thursday led a protest against the proposed Bijbehara–Pahalgam rail line, warning that the project would deprive thousands of farmers of their livelihoods and cause irreversible damage to the fragile ecosystem of south Kashmir.

The protest was held at Wulurhama village in Pahalgam area of Anantnag district, one of several villages likely to be affected by the proposed railway alignment.

The junior Mufti was joined by residents from nearby villages, many of whom said their orchards, paddy fields and homes fall along the proposed route.

“On the one hand the government talks about improving connectivity, and on the other it is taking away the only source of income of the people,” Mufti said. “We are not against development, but this rail line is going to destroy fertile agricultural land. When you snatch people’s livelihood, where do you expect them to go?”

Mufti said agriculture and horticulture form the backbone of Kashmir’s economy and warned that large-scale land acquisition would further worsen unemployment in the region.

“Jammu and Kashmir is already grappling with a serious unemployment crisis – touching 39 percent after the abrogation of special status in 2019. Farmers and orchardists are barely surviving. At least allow villagers to earn their living from their land,” she said.

According to Mufti, the proposed rail line passes through several villages, including Wulurhama, Dirhama, Adlach, Joibal-Veeri, Trail, Hanumanpora and several others, cutting across orchards, paddy fields and residential areas.

She said residents have lost their peace of mind and remain uncertain about their future.

“Authorities have already conducted surveys and erected yellow marker poles in many villages along the Bijbehara–Pahalgam road,” she said. “People were never consulted. How is this logical?”

Mufti also raised serious environmental concerns, saying the project would add pressure on an already ecologically sensitive region.

“Jammu and Kashmir is an ecologically fragile area. We are witnessing changing weather patterns and a decline in snowfall even during peak winter,” she said. “If this project goes ahead, it will further destabilize the environment and could lead to landslides and other disasters.”

She urged the central government and railway authorities to engage with local communities and explore alternative routes that do not involve the acquisition of fertile agricultural land.

“We are not opposing development,” Junior Mufti said. “But development should not come at the cost of people’s livelihoods and the environment. There must be a humane and sustainable approach.”

Junior Mufti said the PDP would take up the issue with the Railway Ministry and seek a review of the proposed alignment.

She also criticized the ruling National Conference (NC) government for what she termed its silence on issues affecting locals.

“The government has failed to speak up on matters that directly impact the lives of the people,” she said.

Kolkata, Jan 22: An NIA court here has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case linked to a Pakistan-sponsored conspiracy to recruit and radicalise Muslim youths in West Bengal for the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba terror outfit, officials said on Thursday.
