BRO intensifies snow clearance on Mughal, Basohli-Bhaderwah roads in Jammu after heavy snowfall

Jammu, Mar 20: As heavy snowfall disrupted traffic movement in several parts of the Jammu region, the Border Roads Organisation has intensified snow clearance on the Mughal Road and the Basohli–Bani–Bhaderwah road, officials said on Thursday.

Following heavy snowfall in the area on Tuesday, Mughal Road, connecting the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in the Jammu region with south Kashmir’s Shopian, was closed for vehicular traffic.

“Snow clearance is underway on Mughal Road in Poonch after heavy snowfall disrupted connectivity. The Border Roads Organisation’s 79 RCC team is working round the clock to reopen the route swiftly,” officials said.

The BRO’s 52 RCC has cleared the road from Hirpora to Peer Ki Gali, they said, adding that the heavy snowfall on Thursday night made the operation difficult.

The BRO’s Border Roads Task Force under Project ‘Sampark’ also carried out an operation to ensure the recovery of an SUV trapped in heavy snow on Mughal Road, they said.

After heavy snowfall disrupted traffic movement on the Basohli–Bani–Bhaderwah road, the BRO has intensified the clearance operations, officials said, adding that fresh snowfall took place on Thursday.

Doda district has remained cut off from Kathua for the past two days due to heavy snowfall, with additional deployment of men and machinery to restore traffic, they said.

Another operation is underway to clear a massive landslide at Malai Nallah on the Reasi–Mahore road in Reasi district, they added.

There were multiple landslides on the Reasi–Arnas–Mahore road at Chassana, Malai Nallah and Kansauli, and efforts are being made by the BRO to clear the route, officials said.

Premium petrol price up Rs 2, industrial diesel up Rs 22; no change in normal petrol, diesel rates

Premium petrol price up Rs 2, industrial diesel up Rs 22; no change in normal petrol, diesel rates

New Delhi, Mar 20: The price of premium or higher-grade petrol price on Friday was increased by Rs 2 per litre while the rate of bulk diesel sold to industrial users was hiked by about Rs 22 a litre, reflecting the spike in global oil prices amid conflict in the Middle-East.

However, the price of normal petrol and diesel remains unchanged.

Premium 95-Octane petrol price in Delhi has been increased from Rs 99.89 per litre to Rs 101.89 in the national capital, industry sources said.

Alongside, bulk or industrial diesel prices were hiked from Rs 87.67 per litre to Rs 109.59 in Delhi.

International oil prices touched USD 119 per barrel on Thursday on intensifying Iran war, before pulling back to around USD 108 a barrel.

A litre of normal petrol in Delhi continues to cost Rs 94.77 while the same grade diesel comes for Rs 87.67 a litre.

Normal petrol typically has an octane rating of 91-92 and is suitable for standard engines, offering adequate performance for everyday driving. Premium petrol, on the other hand, has a higher octane rating of 95-98, making it ideal for high-performance or high-compression engines.

At a media briefing, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said there is no increase in prices of normal petrol and diesel.

“Some increase is reported in the premium category which hardly makes up for 2-4 per cent of the entire petrol (sold in the country),” she said. “There is no increase in price for the common man.

Pricing decisions, she said, are taken by oil companies independently as petrol and diesel pricing was deregulated in 2010 and 2014 respectively. “It (pricing) is decided by oil marketing companies. Government does not regulate petrol and diesel prices,” she added.

The government is closely monitoring global oil markets, but there is no immediate plan to raise retail fuel prices. Oil marketing companies are expected to absorb the current cost pressure for the time being.

“Our priority is to make energy available to all consumers, which we have been doing all through the crisis. Till now we have not increased the prices,” she added.

Retail petrol and diesel prices have been frozen since April 2022, with fuel retailers like Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) absorbing losses when crude prices are high and making profits when rates are low.

This meant that when global fuel prices went up in response to elevated crude prices, prices were stable in India. And when softening of crude prices pushed down fuel rates globally, rates in India remained unchanged.

The government wants to continue to shield consumers, and the same policy will continue unless there is a huge spike in crude prices.

India imports 88 per cent of its crude oil needs and roughly half of its natural gas requirement. These mostly come via the Strait of Hormuz. Following the US and Israeli attacks on Iranian government, military and nuclear facilities, Iran warned shipping away from the strait, and insurers withdrew coverage, effectively halting tanker movements.

Prices had risen to USD 119 per barrel in June 2022 in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That year, oil companies had nominal profits, but in FY24, they posted record Rs 81,000 crore profit, helping make up for past dent in margins.

This year, the three companies have posted Rs 23,743 crore profit in the December quarter alone.

Mumbai, Mar 20: The rupee fell 19 paise to its record intra-day low of 93.08 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday as the greenback strengthened further and FII outflows continued unabated amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.

Elevated global crude oil prices put further pressure on the local unit, while a positive opening at the domestic equity markets cushioned against a sharper fall, according to forex traders.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the local unit opened at 92.92 against the greenback before breaching the 93-mark for the first time to trade at 93.08, down 19 paise from its previous close.

The rupee slumped 49 paise to close at a record low of 92.89 against the US dollar on Wednesday.

Forex markets were closed on Thursday on account of Gudhi Padwa. “The rupee looks vulnerable with the RBI the only one protecting it from further fall by selling dollars.

FPIs were sellers on Thursday when Sensex and Nifty fell to a 21-month low,” Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.17 per cent higher at 100.25.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading 1.64 per cent lower at USD 106.9 per barrel in futures trade.

On the domestic equity market front, the Sensex rebounded from Thursday’s crash, surging 960.67 points, or 1.29 per cent, to 75,167.91, while Nifty was up 311.50 points, or 1.35 per cent, to 23,313.65.

Delhi court acquits 2 alleged ISIS-JK operatives, flags gaps in special cell’s probe

Delhi court acquits 2 alleged ISIS-JK operatives, flags gaps in special cell’s probe

New Delhi, Mar 20: Flagging gaps in the probe, a Delhi court has acquitted two men accused of pledging allegiance to banned terrorist organisation ISIS, besides procuring arms and ammunition from Uttar Pradesh for the Islamic State Jammu & Kashmir (ISIS-JK) cadres for executing terrorist acts.

Underlining that the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt, Additional Sessions Judge Amit Bansal acquitted Jamsheed Zahoor Paul and Parvaiz Rashid Lone, residents of Shopian in Kashmir, who were arrested in 2018.

The special cell of Delhi Police had registered a case against them under sections 18 (punishment for conspiracy) and 20 (punishment for being members of terrorist gang or organisation) of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and under the Arms Act provisions.

Police claimed that they received a tip-off that Paul and Lone had pledged allegiance to ISIS and were in Delhi to procure weapons for terrorist activities on September 6, 2018.

The Special Cell alleged that the duo were apprehended at the Jama Masjid bus stop on Netaji Subhash Marg, near the Red Fort, with two 7.65mm pistols and ten live cartridges.

In an 79-page order passed on Thursday, the court said, “It is held that the prosecution has failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt against both the accused persons. Both the accused persons are thus acquitted in this case.”

Highlighting the failure to follow rules regarding the handling of digital evidence, the court said four mobile phones seized from the accused were kept unsealed in the custody of the investigating officer (IO) for nearly two months before being sent for forensic analysis.

“It raises a strong doubt of tampering with the said mobile phones as without any plausible or satisfactory explanation the prolonged custody of the said devices remained with the IOs and that too in an unsealed condition,” the court said.

The court also rejected screenshots of alleged chats with their terror handlers, saying it failed to meet the mandatory requirement regarding the admissibility of electronic evidence.

While the prosecution claimed the duo was in touch with ISIS-JK handlers via the BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) app, the court found no evidence to establish such a nexus.

“The prosecution has also failed to prove that the accused persons used to communicate with their handlers, namely, Umarbin Nazir and Adil Thokar on BBM App,” the court said.

Another major lacuna, the court flagged, was the lack of independent witnesses. Despite the arrest taking place at 10:45 PM in a busy area near a metro station and bus stand, no public witnesses were made part of the investigation.

“The failure to join independent witnesses, especially when the public witnesses were available raises a strong doubt on the prosecution version regarding the recovery of the said arms and ammunition from the accused persons,” the court said.

Concluding the verdict, Judge Bansal said said that the prosecution failed to prove that on September 9, 2018, both accused persons were members of ISIS and had conspired with two other co-accused, Asif Nazir Dar alias Ummar Ibn Nazir, who later died, and Adil Vani alias Adil Thokar, who is still absconding, to commit terrorist act or any activity linked to the commission of a terrorist act at different places within the country.

He said it was also not proved that the duo, in pursuance of the said conspiracy, purchased or collected weapons for committing terrorist acts and also had chats with their handlers and co-accused through BBM and WhatsApp.

“The prosecution has also failed to prove that during the said period prior to September 6, 2018, both the accused persons were found to be members of ISIS which is a banned terrorist organisation and is involved in committing terrorist acts,” the judge said.

Israel says it will hold off striking key Iranian natural gas field as war rattles energy markets

Israel says it will hold off striking key Iranian natural gas field as war rattles energy markets

Dubai, Mar 20: Israel pledged to refrain from more strikes on a key Iranian gas field after Iran intensified attacks on oil and natural gas facilities around the Gulf, raising the stakes in a war that has sent shock waves through energy markets and the global economy.

Global fuel supplies were already under pressure because of Iran’s stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which a fifth of the world’s oil is transported.

The Islamic Republic’s retaliation for Israel’s attack on its South Pars gas field sent fuel prices soaring even higher and risked drawing Iran’s Arab neighbors directly into the conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said late Thursday that, at the request of President Donald Trump, Israel will hold off on any further attacks on the offshore gas field.

Since the US and Israel launched the war on February 28, Iran’s top leaders have been killed in airstrikes and the country’s military capabilities have been severely degraded. Netanyahu said in a televised address that Iran no longer has the ability to enrich uranium or make ballistic missiles, although he did not provide evidence.

Still, Iran — now led by the son of the supreme leader killed in the war’s opening salvo — remains capable of missile and drone attacks targeting its Gulf Arab neighbors.

Underscoring the danger to ships in the region, a vessel was set ablaze off the United Arab Emirates’ coast and another was damaged off Qatar. Efforts to bypass the strait were also under pressure: An Iranian drone hit a Saudi refinery on the Red Sea, which the country had hoped to use as an alternative route.

Brent crude oil, the international standard, briefly surged above USD 119 a barrel, up more than 60 per cent since the war started. The European benchmark for natural gas prices also rose sharply and has roughly doubled in the past month.

UN Security Council meets over Iran’s attacks on Gulf states

The United Nations Security Council held an urgent closed meeting Thursday during which Gulf countries stressed the need for Iran to halt attacks on them, said Bahrain’s UN Ambassador Jamal Alrowaiei, the Arab representative on the UN’s most powerful body.

But Iran has showed no signs of backing down. Saudi Arabia said its SAMREF refinery in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu was hit. Saudi Arabia had begun pumping large volumes of oil west toward the Red Sea to avoid the Strait of Hormuz.

Qatar, a key source of natural gas for world markets, said Iranian missiles that caused extensive damage to the Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas facility, reduced its exports by about 17 percent and will cost about USD 20 billion in lost revenue a year. The damage will take up to five years to repair, even though production at the facility had already been halted after earlier attacks.

Two oil refineries in Kuwait and gas operations in Abu Dhabi also were targeted by Iran, authorities said.

Millions of people fled to shelters in Israel as sirens warned repeatedly after a barrage of Iranian missiles in the central part of the country as well as Jerusalem and areas nearby, including the West Bank.

Netanyahu says Iran’s military has been severely hit

At Thursday’s news conference, Netanyahu said: “Iran’s air defenses have been rendered useless, their navy is lying at the bottom of the sea. … Their air force is nearly destroyed.”

He said he hopes the Iranian people will rise up against the Islamic Republic that has ruled for nearly a half-century. There’s been no sign of any organized opposition since the war began, after Iranian authorities crushed mass protests in January.

The prime minister’s comments to foreign journalists came amid difficult days for Trump and Netanyahu, with a top US intelligence official resigning and claiming Israel pushed Trump into the war, and Israel’s attacks on South Pars, which led to Iran’s retaliatory strikes on the region’s oil and gas fields.

“I misled no one,” Netanyahu said. “And I didn’t have to convince President Trump about the need to prevent Iran from developing its nuclear programme.”

Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that US forces were attacking deeper into Iranian territory, with warplanes hunting Iranian boats in the strait and dropping 5,000-pound bombs on underground weapons-storage facilities.

Iran’s state TV, quoting a Revolutionary Guard statement, said the country’s air defense system hit an F-35 fighter jet. US Central Command said an F-35 made an emergency landing after flying a combat mission over Iran. A command spokesman, Capt. Tim Hawkins, said the aircraft landed safely, the pilot was in “stable” condition and the incident was under investigation.

Trump says he is not deploying troops to Iran

Iran condemned Israel’s attack on South Pars, the Iranian part of the world’s largest gas field, located offshore in the Persian Gulf and owned jointly with Qatar.

With some 80 per cent of power generated in Iran coming from natural gas, according to the International Energy Agency, the attack threatens the country’s electricity supplies.

After Trump requested Israel not attack South Pars, he also warned on social media that if Iran continued striking Qatar, the US would “massively blow up the entirety” of the field.

Asked later about the possibility of US ground troops being deployed to Iran, Trump responded: “No. I’m not putting troops anywhere.”

Death toll climbs in third week of war

More than 1,300 people in Iran have been killed during the war. Israeli strikes against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon have displaced more than 1 million people, according to the Lebanese government, which says more than 1,000 people have been killed. Israel says it has killed more than 500 Hezbollah militants.

In Israel, 15 people have been killed by Iranian missile fire. Four people were also killed in the occupied West Bank by an Iranian missile strike overnight.

At least 13 US military members have been killed.
