Sidhu questions timing of Kohli's decision

New Delhi, May 11: Former India batter Navjot Singh Sidhu questioned the timing of Virat Kohli’s intention to retire from Test cricket ahead of the upcoming five-match Test series in England, starting June 20.

According to sources close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the 36-year-old stalwart recently communicated his intention to step away from the longest format of the game.

However, the BCCI has not given up. Sources within the board say they are trying to convince Kohli to continue, especially with the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle beginning with the England tour.

“Virat Kohli’s decision that he wants to retire has created a stir across the cricketing world. His intention is right, his motive is noble — that ‘the old order must change, yielding place to the new’,” Sidhu said in a video posted on his X account.

“But the timing and occasion are not appropriate because the pride and prestige of India are on the line. We are heading into a tour that is the toughest litmus test even for other Test-playing nations,” he added.

The veteran termed Kohli India’s “knight in shining armour in England”, adding that his absence will leave the Men in Blue without much experience, with Rohit Sharma already stepping away from Test cricket.

“Why do I say Kohli can be our knight in shining armour in England? Because he has the experience, especially after Rohit Sharma’s departure. You can’t send an inexperienced side to England,” Sidhu added.

Kohli, who made his Test debut in 2011, has represented India in 123 Tests, scoring 9230 runs at an average of 46.85. He also led India in 68 Tests, making him the country’s most successful captain in the format. His intensity, fitness, and leadership transformed India into a dominant Test side both at home and overseas.

Kudos to Govt's efforts under PM Modi leadership for ensuring peace, stability: NSE CEO

New Delhi, May 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Sunday with top government functionaries, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, a day after India and Pakistan reached an understanding to stop military actions.

National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and all three service chiefs were among those who attended the meeting.

India had accused Pakistan of violating the terms of the understanding on Saturday night and asked it to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility.

The situation has since cooled down even though residents in several border areas continue to live in a state of apprehension following days of shelling and drone incidents.

Karnah reels from shelling fallout

Karnah reels from shelling fallout

Kupwara, May 11: Sitting on the debris of his house in the Batpora area of border town Karnah in north Kashmirís Kupwara district, Rafiq Ahmad is shattered over the loss of his house which he had constructed by spending his entire savings.

According to Rafiq, he, along with his family, was having dinner when shelling from across the border started on May 7 at about 8 pm.

ìWe had hardly finished our dinner when a mortar shell hit a vehicle in front of our house. The vehicle immediately caught fire and its oil tank burst with a bang. All of a sudden my house and four other houses caught fire. The raging flames made it impossible for us to save our belongings. We saw our houses turning into ashes and could do nothing,î Rafiq told Greater Kashmir at his native village.

ìThe district administration next day shifted us to a makeshift shelter at Government Degree College Sogam. Today we have come here to see the gravity of the loss. Nothing has been left behind that we could benefit from,î Rafiq said. ìMy four brothers and I have lost everything. Our biggest concern is to find a place to stay as we are left with no shelter. The government must come to the rescue of families like us who faced the brunt of cross-border shelling.î

He said that the cross-border shelling has cost them badly and now they hope the ceasefire agreement stays forever so that they do not have to face such an eventuality in the future.

Rafiqís story is not an exception.

The homes of several other families have also been reduced to rubble.

Bisma Nazir, 23, was set to get married on May 10.

Her house was filled with wedding decorations, gifts, and dreams.

However, everything changed when a mortar shell hit her house in Hajinar village on May 9 night.

ìOur house and the dream of my family members of seeing me married are gone. We had so many plans. Now nothing is left. Even my wedding dress is under the rubble,î the traumatized Bisma said.

Bismaís father, Nazir Ahmad Mir, a daily labourer, had spent savings of several years on her wedding.

ìI had planned everything to see my daughter happy but one shell destroyed my house, my dream, and her future,î Mir said.

What was supposed to be a joyous wedding has turned into a scene of heartbreak, replaced by silence and sorrow instead of music and laughter.

The cross-border shelling has damaged several shops in the main town of Karnah, leaving shopkeepers devastated.

ìWe have lost everything. Our shops are destroyed. The shelling has affected our livelihood,î said, a local shopkeeper whose shop was hit by a motor shell on May 9.

According to an official in Karnah, at least 20 houses have been fully damaged while almost 100 structures including shops and houses have been partially damaged.

COAS authorises kinetic response

Jammu, May 11: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi Sunday granted ìfull authority to the Army Commanders of the western borders for counteraction in the kinetic domainî to any ceasefire and airspace violation.

He issued these stern and unambiguous directions while reviewing security with them (Army Commanders) Sunday afternoon.

The security review meeting was conducted in the wake of ceasefire and airspace violations on the night of May 10 and 11, 2025 at several places across the western border, hours after the understanding reached between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan vis-‡-vis complete cessation of fire and military action, all along the International Border and the Line of Control.

Notably, Jammu, Samba and Kathua come under the Western Command of the Indian Army while 14 Corps; 15 Corps and 16 Corps come under the Northern Command. Both commands take care of the security of the western borders of the country besides other strategic commands.

Consequent to the ceasefire and airspace violations on the night of May 10, 11, 2025 General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) reviewed the situation with the Army Commanders of the Western borders,î ADG-PI of Indian Army posted on its ëXí handle under the caption ìOperation Sindoor.î

The COAS has granted full authority to the Army Commanders for counteraction in the kinetic domain to any violation of the understanding reached via the DGMO talks of May 10, 2025,î it added.

Almost, a similar statement was made by the Foreign Secretary in a special briefing on Saturday night.

Before the review meeting chaired by the COAS on Sunday afternoon, the Indian Air Force on its ëXí handle reiterated, ìThe Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully executed its assigned tasks in Operation Sindoor, with precision and professionalism. Operations were conducted deliberately and discreetly, aligned with national objectives.î

Since the operations are still ongoing, a detailed briefing will be conducted in due course. The IAF urges all to refrain from speculation and dissemination of unverified information,î it said.

On May 10, hours after the DGMOs announced the ceasefire violation, Pakistan violated it (ceasefire) by resorting to heavy firing, shelling and border intrusion through drones along the Line of Control and International Border in the Jammu region on Saturday evening besides several other parts along the western border including Kashmir.

This was stated by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also in a special briefing in New Delhi late Saturday night, following instances of ceasefire violation and air space intrusion.

For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan. This is a breach of the understanding that arrived earlier, today. The Armed Forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations and we take very serious notice of these violations,î Misri had stated.

We call upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility. The Armed Forces are maintaining a strong vision of the situation. They have been given instructions to deal strongly with any instances of repetition of the violations of the border, along the international border as well as the Line of Control,î the Foreign Secretary had said.

Bob Cowper, first batter to hit a Test triple century in Australia, passes away

New Delhi, May 11: Bob Cowper, who was the first batter to hit a triple century in Test cricket on Australian soil, had passed away at the age of 84 on Sunday after a battle with illness. He is survived by his wife, Dale, and daughters Olivia and Sera.

Cowper was an enormously talented left-hand batter renowned for his elegant stroke play, his patience at the crease and his ability to amass big scores for Australia. The most significant moment in his career, spanning 27 Tests, was a knock of 307 against England at the MCG in 1966, the first triple century in the longest format of the game recorded in Australia, as it also helped the hosts retain the Ashes.

In the 27 Tests he played from 1964 to 1968, Cowper amassed 2061 runs at an average of 48.16, including five centuries, before making the decision to walk away from international cricket at age 28 to pursue a business career.

For Victoria, Cowper played 83 first-class matches, making a significant contribution to a successful era for his home state. Cowper later served as an ICC match referee and was a trusted advisor to many in the game. In 2023, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition of his services to cricket.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Cowper, who was a hugely respected figure in Australian cricket. Bob was a wonderful batter who will always be remembered for his famous triple century at the MCG, as well as his strong influence in the Australian and Victorian teams of the 1960s.”

“He was also a significant contributor to cricket in other roles, including as an ICC match referee, and his wisdom was always keenly sought. On behalf of Cricket Australia, our deepest condolences to Bob’s family, friends and former teammates at this very sad time,” said Mike Baird, CA Chairman, in a statement.

Yogi Adityanath declares terrorism will be met with force

Yogi Adityanath declares terrorism will be met with force

Lucknow, May 11: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday inaugurated the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility at the Lucknow node of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor, along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, marking a major milestone in India’s journey toward defence self-reliance.

The Chief Minister used the occasion to condemn Pakistan-backed terrorism and praised India’s recent military “Operation Sindoor” as a powerful demonstration of India’s resolve. “India has sent a clear message to the world—terrorism will be met with force,” he said. He urged all citizens to unite under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confront terrorism with a single voice.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh joined the event virtually and, along with Adityanath, launched the BrahMos facility by pressing a ceremonial button. A publication on defence manufacturing, Brahmand, was also released. As a mark of honour, Adityanath received a model of the BrahMos missile and handed out appointment letters to young professionals selected by BrahMos Aerospace.

Praising the leadership of both Prime Minister Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Adityanath described Operation Sindoor as a coordinated effort showcasing the strength of India’s Army, Navy, and Air Force. “The world saw what BrahMos can do during Operation Sindoor. If anyone still has doubts, they should ask the people in Pakistan what this missile is capable of,” he remarked.

He emphasised that under the Modi government, terrorist acts will be treated as acts of war. “Terrorism will not end unless it is completely crushed,” he added, reaffirming the government’s zero-tolerance stance.

The Chief Minister also drew attention to the strategic importance of indigenous defence production. Pointing to countries like Israel as models of deterrence through self-reliance, he stressed that India must not depend on others for its security. “A self-sufficient nation must be capable of defending itself,” he said. Adityanath highlighted that six cities: Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Aligarh, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot have been designated as key centres of defence manufacturing. He cited the 2020 Defence Expo in Lucknow—organised after the BJP’s return to power—as the moment when the BrahMos facility was formally proposed. “We have already inaugurated an ammunition production centre in Kanpur, and the demand for its expansion is growing,” he said.

Adityanath claimed that compared to 2013–14, India’s defence production and exports have risen several-fold. “India is now not only self-reliant in meeting its security needs but is also supplying defence equipment to friendly countries,” he said. Uttar Pradesh, he added, is steadily progressing toward its target of Rs 50,000 crore in investments and one lakh jobs through the Defence Corridor initiative. “We have signed 57 MoUs with a potential investment value of Rs 30,000 crore in the defence sector alone. Nearly 60,000 youth are expected to benefit,” he said. Thanking organisations like BrahMos, PTC, DRDO, and L&T for setting up manufacturing units and training local youth, he contrasted the current landscape with the pre-2017 era when industries were reluctant to invest due to poor infrastructure and security concerns. “When people are not safe, how can capital be safe?” he asked. “Today, both are secure, and Uttar Pradesh is confidently stepping forward to serve the nation’s defence needs.”

India-Pak tensions, inflation, economic data key triggers for next week

Sensex, Nifty open lower as Trump tariffs trigger global sell-off

Mumbai, May 1: The Indian stock market outlook for next week will be guided by several domestic and international cues such as retail inflation, quarterly results, US jobless claims data and others.

Next week, companies like SMC Global, Bajaj Electricals, JM Financial, Raymond, Tata Steel, UPL, AB Capital, Bharti Airtel, Cipla, Hero MotoCorp, Tata Motors, HAL, Tata Power, and JSW Energy will release their Q4 FY2024- 25 results.

In India, inflation will be in focus with the release of CPI YoY data on May 13, providing clarity on consumer price trends and their implications for the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy. Additionally, Exports YoY data on May 15 will shed light on the health of India’s external trade amid global uncertainties.

In the US, the spotlight will be on inflation and consumption metrics. On May 13, both CPI MoM (Month-on-Month) and YoY (Year-on-Year) figures will be closely watched for signals on the Federal Reserve’s policy direction.

Meanwhile, China will release its Money Supply M2 YoY data on May 15, a critical indicator of liquidity and credit growth that could influence monetary easing expectations.

Bajaj Broking Research said, “The week of May 13 to 16, 2025, brings a slate of crucial economic data releases across India, the United States, and China, which are likely to guide investor sentiment and central bank expectations.”

Last week, the stock market ended lower due to the escalation between India and Pakistan.

The Sensex declined by nearly 1,047 points to settle at 79,454, while the Nifty slipped 338 points to close at 24,008 — both registering a weekly loss of approximately 1.4 per cent.

Sector-wise, real estate and PSU banks were the major laggards, falling around 6.5 per cent and 4.5 per cent, respectively, while the auto and media sectors bucked the trend to emerge as top gainers.

Puneet Singhania, Director at Master Trust Group, said, “Rising tensions between India and Pakistan are likely to dominate investor sentiment in the coming week, creating a cautious undertone in Indian equity markets. Any escalation along the border or strong diplomatic developments could lead to uncertainty.”

“Alongside geopolitical concerns, the ongoing Q4 corporate earnings season will continue to drive stock-specific action. Further developments on both geopolitical and corporate fronts will play a crucial role in determining the market direction,” he added.

PM Modi chairs high-level meet with top govt officials, reviews preparedness

New Delhi, May 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given clear directions to armed forces to respond to cross-border firing and shelling with full force, saying “Wahan se goli chalegi, toh yahan se gola,” sources said on Sunday.

They said the Operation Sindoor is far from over, and India will respond with bombs to every Pakistani bullet fired from across the Line of Control (LoC).

They say that the PM has said enough is enough, “Wahan se goli chalegi, toh yahan se gola chalega.” (If they fire bullets from there, we will respond with bombs). The turning point was the attacks on the air bases, they said.

“If they fire, we will fire, and if they attack, we will attack,” they added.

The sources also informed about India’s stand on Kashmir, saying that the country doesn’t need anyone to mediate and there was only one issue at hand, which was the return of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

“We have a very clear position on Kashmir, there is only one matter left – the return of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). There is nothing else to talk. If they talk about handing over terrorists, we can talk. I don’t have any intention of any other topic. We don’t want anyone to mediate. We don’t need anyone to mediate,” the sources were quoted as saying.

Following India and Pakistan’s agreement for the cessation of hostilities, the Indian Air Force informed that the tasks assigned to it in Operation Sindoor had been completed with “precision” and “professionalism.”

They further informed that the operations are still ongoing and have not finished. According to their post on ‘X,’ a special briefing regarding the same will be conducted in due course.

The Indian Air Force also urged everyone to refrain from speculation and disseminate unverified information.

“The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully executed its assigned tasks in Operation Sindoor, with precision and professionalism. Operations were conducted in a deliberate and discreet manner, aligned with National Objectives. Since the Operations are still ongoing, a detailed briefing will be conducted in due course. The IAF urges all to refrain from speculation and dissemination of unverified information”, the Indian Air Force posted on X.

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 to strike multiple terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir after a deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam last month.
