0

New Delhi, May 10: The government on Saturday advised all media channels to refrain from using civil defence air raid sirens sound in their programmes other than community awareness drive.

In an advisory, the Directorate General Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards said exercising the powers conferred under the Civil Defence Act, 1968, all media channels were requested to refrain from using civil defence air raids sirens sounds in their programmes other than for educating the community.

It said that the routine use of sirens may likely to reduce the sensitivity of civilians towards the air raids sirens and civilians may misunderstand it as routine matter, used by the media channels, during the actual air raids.

The advisory came amidst the heightened tension due to the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict.

CM Omar announces ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each for kin of Pak shelling victims

Jammu, May 10: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in Pakistani shelling in the Union Territory.

An additional district development commissioner and 19 villagers were killed in Poonch, Rajouri, Jammu and Baramulla sectors in the past four days after Indian armed forces struck nine terrorist infrastructure targets across the border on May 7 in retaliation to last month’s Pahalgam terror attack.

While 12 civilians were killed in Poonch on Wednesday, two others were killed in Uri and Poonch on Friday. Another five civilians, including a senior government officer, lost their lives in Pakistani shelling Saturday morning.

“Deeply pained by the loss of innocent lives due to recent shelling from Pakistan. My Government is taking every possible measure to minimise the hardship of our people,” the chief minister said in a post on X.

The post, shared by the office of the chief minister, said while no compensation can ever replace a loved one or heal the trauma caused to the family, as a gesture of support and solidarity, ex-gratia relief of Rs 10 lakh will be provided to families of all who have deceased.

“We stand with every affected family in this hour of grief,” the chief minister said.

India responds to Pakistani escalation with measured force under “Operation Sindoor”

300-400 Pakistani drones targeted Indian locations from Leh to Sir Creek: Govt

New Delhi, May 10: India launched a calibrated military response under Operation Sindoor following a series of escalatory and provocative actions by Pakistan across the western front, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday.

The joint briefing by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh outlined the scale and precision of India’s response while sharply rebuking Pakistan’s attacks on civilian infrastructure and its “tissue of lies” spread through misinformation.

“It is Pakistani actions that have constituted provocation and escalation,” said Foreign Secretary Misri, addressing the press persons in New Delhi “India has defended and reacted in a responsible and measured fashion.”

Pakistan’s aggression and civilian targeting

Military officials at the briefing said, Pakistan has been carrying out sustained attacks along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC), using an array of weaponry including UCAV drones, loitering munitions, long-range artillery, and fighter aircraft.

“The Pakistan Army continued aggressive operations across the entire western front,” said Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. “Attempts were made to breach Indian airspace at more than 26 locations from Srinagar to Naliya.”

In the early hours of May 10, a high-speed missile was launched toward an Indian airbase in Punjab at 1:40 AM. Simultaneously, Indian Air Force stations in Udhampur, Pathankot, Adampur, Bhuj, and Bathinda suffered limited damage, with both personnel and equipment affected.

More alarmingly, Pakistan directly targeted civilian spaces. “In a deplorable and unprofessional act, Pakistan targeted medical centres and school premises at our airbases in Srinagar, Awantipora and Udhampur,” said Wing Commander Yomika Singh.

The Ministry of Defence further confirmed that the famous Shambhu Temple and residential areas in Jammu were targeted, endangering worshippers and civilians.

India’s precision response

India’s response, officials emphasized, was focused entirely on military objectives. “Following Pakistan’s deliberate targeting of military installations, the Indian Armed Forces launched a swift and calibrated counter-offensive,” Col. Qureshi stated. “Technical installations, command and control centres, radar sites, and weapon depots were precisely targeted.”

Key Pakistani military installations at Rafiqui, Murid, Chaklala, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Chunian were hit using air-launched precision munitions. Radar installations at Pasrur and the Sialkot aviation base were also destroyed. “India ensured minimum collateral damage while neutralising these threats,” Wing Commander Yomika Singh noted.

Escalation on the ground

On the ground, heavy exchange of artillery fire continued in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, and Akhnoor, with Indian forces inflicting substantial losses on the Pakistani side. “Indian Army has responded effectively and proportionately, causing extensive damage to Pakistan Army,” Col. Qureshi said.

Indian agencies have also observed a troubling build-up of Pakistani troops near the LoC. “Pakistani military movements into forward areas indicate intent to escalate,” Wing Commander Singh warned. “Indian Armed Forces remain in a high state of operational readiness.”

Misinformation and false claims

Foreign Secretary Misri issued a scathing critique of what he called a “state-sponsored campaign of lies” by Pakistan. “The claims that they have made about attacking and destroying various places… are completely false,” he said. These included fake reports of the destruction of the S-400 system at Adampur, airbases at Sirsa and Suratgarh, and even the BrahMos base at Nagrota.

“This misinformation is being peddled by Pakistani state agencies. We urge everyone not to be misled by this tissue of lies,” Misri said, adding that visuals released from the targeted airbases showed intact runways and normalcy on ground.

In a particularly grave escalation, Pakistan reportedly shelled the town of Rajouri, resulting in the death of Additional District Development Commissioner Shri Raj Kumar Thapa, among other civilian casualties. Overnight damage was also reported in Ferozepur and Jalandhar.

“Do not want escalation”

Despite the hostilities, India has maintained that it does not seek further escalation. “The Indian Armed Forces reiterate their commitment to non-escalation—provided it is reciprocated by the Pakistan Military,” Wing Commander Singh said.

Foreign Secretary Misri echoed this sentiment while warning against attempts by Pakistan to sow communal discord. “Pakistan has consistently attempted to target civilians, especially in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. They have also tried to stoke communal tensions within India. These attempts are doomed to fail,” he said.

Concluding the briefing, Misri said the situation remains fluid. “We are dealing with an evolving situation. We will continue to update you,” he stated.

India should take first step to de-escalate tensions with Pakistan: Mehbooba Mufti

Military action can't be solution to bring peace in region: Mehbooba on border tension

Srinagar, May 10: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said India should embrace its leadership role in the subcontinent and take the first step to de-escalate tensions with Pakistan, as it is a moment for the country to stand tall and demonstrate that its true strength lies in its soft power and commitment to peace.

Mufti’s remarks came after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to Pakistani Army chief Asif Munir, and “urged both parties to find ways to de-escalate”.

“Even though US Vice-President J D Vance initially said that America wouldn’t intervene beyond a certain point in the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, in light of the worrying intensity of the situation, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has now reached out to the Pakistani Army chief, urging de-escalation,” Mufti said in a post on X.

Rather than relying on “inconsistent” international support, India should take the first step to de-escalate, she said.

“India as the world’s largest democracy and now as an emerging power/the most populous nation with a rapidly growing economy must not rely on inconsistent international support.

“Instead, India should embrace its leadership role in the subcontinent and take the first step to de-escalate,” Mufit said.

“The world is watching us. This is the moment for India to stand tall and demonstrate that its true strength lies in its soft power and commitment to peace, not in nukes,” Mufti added.

Tensions between India and Pakistan flared up significantly after the Indian armed forces on Wednesday conducted precision strikes targeting nine terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that had cross-border linkages.

China warns countries against trade deals with US that harm Beijing's interests

Beijing, May 10: China on Saturday “strongly” urged India and Pakistan to exercise calm and restraint and return to the track of peaceful settlement.

China is closely following the ongoing situation between India and Pakistan and is deeply concerned about the escalation, a statement by the Chinese Foreign Ministry here.

“We strongly urge both sides to act in the larger interest of peace and stability, exercise calm and restraint, return to the track of political settlement through peaceful means, and refrain from any action that could further escalate tensions,” the statement issued by the spokesperson of the ministry said.

“This will be important for the fundamental interest of both India and Pakistan, and for a stable and peaceful region. This is also what the international community hopes to see. China is willing to continue to play a constructive role to this end,” it said.

Tensions between India and Pakistan increased after the Indian armed forces on Wednesday conducted precision strikes targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that had cross-border linkages.

Pakistan launched a fresh wave of drone attacks targeting 26 locations in India — from Jammu and Kashmir to Gujarat — for the second night on Friday, with the defence ministry saying the enemy’s attempts to hit vital installations, including airports and air bases, were successfully thwarted.

India exercised right to respond, focused on dismantling terror infrastructure: Govt

New Delhi, May 10: Pakistan’s military is moving its troops in forward areas, India said on Saturday as the two countries continued to attack each other’s military facilities, dangerously escalating the ongoing conflict.

“The Pakistan military is observed to be moving their troops to border areas,” Colonel Sofiya Qureshi said at a press briefing along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Pakistan, she said, had launched a high-speed missile in Punjab and attacked medical facilities in Srinagar, Avantipura and Udhampur.

“A befitting reply has been given to Pakistani actions,” Qureshi said.

“Pakistan military used high-speed missiles at 1.40 am to target air base in Punjab,” she disclosed.

Pakistan used drones, long-range weapons, loitering munitions, jets to attack India’s military sites along the Western front, Qureshi said.

In response to Pakistani actions, India has responded in a measured way, said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

“It is the Pakistani act that constituted provocation and escalation,” he said.

He dismissed as ludicrous claims by Pakistan of missiles being fired at religious sites.

India also said that Pakistan’s claims of critical infrastructure damage were “completely false”.

The Indian military showed time stamped pictures to deny Pakistan’s claims about air force stations and base destruction in India.

“Indian armed forces remain in high state of operational readiness… all hostile actions have been effectively countered,” Wing Commander Vyomika Singh told reporters.

India, she said, had targeted Pakistan military assets in Rahim Yar Khan.

“Pakistan had attempted a malicious misinformation campaign. Its claims of destroying our S-400 system and airfields at Surat were false,” Singh said.

Indian armed forces carried out precision strikes only at identified military targets in response to Pakistan’s actions, she said.

Singh said Indian armed forces are committed to non-escalation, provided Pakistan side reciprocates.

Saudi says making efforts to de-escalate tensions between India and Pakistan, end current military confrontations

Dubai, May 10: Saudi Arabia early Saturday said it was making efforts to de-escalate tensions between India and Pakistan, end current military confrontations, and promote the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomatic channels.

In a brief statement, the Foreign Ministry said that upon the directives of the Saudi leadership, Al-Jubeir visited India and Pakistan on May 8 and 9 as part of the Kingdom’s “ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions, end current military confrontations, and promote the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomatic channels”.

The Saudi statement came as tensions soared significantly, with Pakistan claiming that its three airbases were targeted by Indian missiles and drones early Saturday.

Pakistan military spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry told a hurriedly called press conference in Islamabad at around 4 am that Nur Khan (Chaklala, Rawalpindi), Murid (Chakwal) and Rafiqui (Shorkot in Jhang district) airbases of Pakistan Air Force were targeted.

Minutes later, citing security officials, state-run PTV said that Pakistan has launched a retaliatory operation “Bunyan al-Marsous”, meaning “Iron Wall”.

Al-Jubeir travelled to New Delhi on Thursday on an unannounced visit and discussed with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar the situation that has developed since India’s military strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir early Wednesday.

On Friday, the Saudi minister visited Islamabad, where he held talks with Pakistan’s top leadership.

Tensions between the two neighbours increased after the Indian armed forces on Wednesday conducted precision strikes targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack that had cross-border linkages.

Ministries of Defence, External Affairs to brief on Operation Sindoor at 10:30 am

New Delhi, May 10: The Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Defence will hold a briefing on Saturday on Operation Sindoor. As per details, the briefing will commence at 10:30 AM.

This comes as tensions between the two countries continues to escalate. Pakistan carried out cross-border shelling on Saturday, causing significant damage to civilian areas in Jammu’s Rajouri district and heightening fears among residents.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief on the demise of J&K Administration Services officer Raj Kumar Thappa. The J-K CM offered his condolences to Thappa who lost his life aftern his home was targeted due to shelling from Pakistan in Rajouri.

“Devastating news from Rajouri. We have lost a dedicated officer of the J&K Administration Services. Just yesterday he was accompanying the Deputy CM around the district & attended the online meeting I chaired. Today the residence of the officer was hit by Pak shelling as they targeted Rajouri town killing our Additional District Development Commissioner Sh Raj Kumar Thappa. I’ve no words to express my shock & sadness at this terrible loss of life. May his soul rest in peace”,

Meanwhile, India launched the retaliatory strikes immediately after Pakistan attacked 26 locations across India on Saturday, the sources told ANI. Intermittent firing is still going on at several places along the Line of Control (LoC). At least four airbases in Pakistan were hit by Indian strikes in the early hours of Saturday, top government sources said, as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate.

According to the Ministry of defence, “Drones have been sighted at 26 locations along the International Border and LoC with Pakistan. These include suspected armed drones. The locations include Baramulla, Srinagar, Avantipora, Nagrota, Jammu, Ferozpur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Lalgarh Jatta, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bhuj, Kuarbet and Lakhi Nala. Regrettably, an armed drone targeted a civilian area in Ferozpur, resulting in injuries to members of a local family. The injured have been provided medical assistance, and security forces have sanitised the area. The Indian Armed Forces are maintaining a high state of alert, and all such aerial threats are being tracked and engaged using counter-drone systems. The situation is under close and constant watch & prompt action is being taken wherever necessary. Citizens, especially in border areas, are advised to remain indoors, limit unnecessary movement, and strictly follow safety instructions issued by local authorities. While there is no need for panic, heightened vigilance and precaution are essential.”
