Shehr-e-Khaas traders meet J&K Bank officials over NPA concerns

Srinagar, Jan 7: A meeting between the Shehr-e-Khaas Traders Alliance and J&K Bank officials was held at the bank’s Khanyar branch unit on Wednesday to address mounting concerns over Non-Performing Assets, loan recovery methods, and operational challenges affecting the business community.

The meeting, convened at the invitation of J&K Bank’s Khanyar branch, brought together senior bank officials and office bearers of the traders’ alliance to discuss several critical issues that have strained relations between the banking institution and local entrepreneurs.

Central to the discussions were concerns about the bank’s approach to handling NPAs and loan recoveries, which the traders’ body has consistently described as lacking sensitivity, particularly in the context of economic disruptions that have severely impacted businesses across the region in recent years.

The traders also raised issues regarding the conduct of certain bank employees in their dealings with distressed account holders, along with various operational matters affecting daily business transactions and banking services.

Alliance President Nazir Ahmad Shah, along with office bearers including Umer Gani, Gowhar Ahmad, Feroz Ahmad, Majid Ahmad, Tariq Ahmad, and Abid Khan, presented a comprehensive case for a more nuanced and understanding approach to debt resolution.

The traders’ body made it clear that they are not seeking blanket relief or supporting willful defaulters who deliberately avoid their financial obligations. Instead, they emphasised the need to differentiate between those who default intentionally and genuine entrepreneurs who have been caught in difficult circumstances due to factors beyond their control.

“While we do not support willful defaulters, genuine entrepreneurs facing legitimate financial difficulties need support and a viable path forward to settle their obligations,” Chief Spokesperson Feroz Ahmad Wani stated during the meeting.

The alliance has formally appealed to both the Jammu and Kashmir government and J&K Bank’s senior management to constitute a high-level committee that would be tasked with formulating a comprehensive policy framework for business revival and systematic loan restructuring across the region.

LoP Sunil Sharma lauds NMC decision as ‘historic move’

LoP Sunil Sharma lauds NMC decision as ‘historic move’

Jammu, Jan 7: The Leader of Opposition in J&K Legislative Assembly and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sunil Sharma on Wednesday lauded the decision of the National Medical Commission (NMC) to withdraw the Letter of Permission (LoP) granted to SMVDIME, Reasi, for running the MBBS course with 50 seats for the academic year 2025-26 and described it as a “historic move.”

Sharma, in a video statement issued to the press on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, evening, stated that the late January 6 night decision of NMC came after it found serious findings in the survey of its (NMC’s) Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) about non-compliance with minimum standards, leading to the recent surprise inspection of SMVDIME.

“Acting under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, which empowers MARB to conduct surprise evaluations of medical institutions without prior notice, a team of assessors recently carried out an inspection at the college. This inspection formed the basis of the subsequent adverse findings,” he said.

The Leader of Opposition also welcomed the decision of NMC to accommodate all students admitted in SMVDIME during counselling for AY 2025-26 in other medical institutions within J&K as supernumerary seats by the competent authority of the J&K government.

“For this, I extend my gratitude and also on behalf of my party to the Union Health Minister J P Nadda, NMC, and the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to make it happen, respecting the sentiments of those following Sanatan Dharma J&K and across the country, as the college is run by donations by a particular community,” he said.

Sunil Sharma also appreciated the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti (SAVDSS), as a conglomerate of like-minded organisations of J&K, by leading a peaceful movement for the cause, and extended gratitude to it.

However, he criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the National Conference for giving a “Hindu-Muslim” spin to the issue related to the “matter of pure faith.”

“We repeatedly stated that we were not against the meritorious students. We never wanted to jeopardise the future of our meritorious students. It was not a question of Hindus and Muslims. The only point was that the people following Sanatan Dharma wanted their donations to be used only for the propagation of the religion. We wanted a Vedic Research Centre or Gurukul should be established there. But the Chief Minister tried to give it another spin. I believe that the NMC decision has come as a setback to the Chief Minister, who wanted to exploit the situation,” the Leader of Opposition said.

He also shared his happiness that the future of all the students admitted to SMVDIME was safeguarded.

Meanwhile, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti (SMVDSS), in a press conference, also welcomed the NMC decision and expressed gratitude to the central leadership, NMC, and the Lieutenant Governor in particular, for making consistent efforts to resolve the issue as per the aspirations of the people.

J&K Census 2027 enumeration in Sep 2026, Feb 2027

J&K Census 2027 enumeration in Sep 2026, Feb 2027

Srinagar, Jan 7: J&K would undergo population enumeration for the Census of India 2027 in September 2026 in the snow-bound areas and in February 2027 in the plains.

The first phase date, House Listing Operations (HLO) in J&K, is to be decided and declared in the coming weeks, while for Ladakh, the month of June has been set, the top ranking Census official said.

Director of Census Operations and Director Citizen Registrations (DCR) for J&K and Ladakh, Amit Sharma, told Greater Kashmir that the Census data collection would feature adjusted timelines for climatic conditions in snow-bound areas for the first phase, while the dates for population enumeration, the second phase, have already been decided by the Centre.

Sharma said the second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), would be conducted in September 2026 for snow-bound areas.

This includes parts of J&K and Ladakh, high-altitude regions where winter accessibility is limited.

For plains and non-snow-bound areas of J&K, the population enumeration is scheduled for February 2027.

The first phase is set to start across the country in April.

Sharma said that HLO, which is the first phase of the Census, will be conducted in June 2026, specifically for Ladakh.

He said the date for HLO would be finalised following a meeting with the Chief Secretary and other J&K officials in the third week of January 2026.

The national schedule for Census 2027 has been outlined in recent government notifications and gazette updates.

The house-listing phase across India will take place from April 1 to September 30 this year.

The states and Union Territories have been given the flexibility of choosing specific 30-day windows within this period, as per their convenience.

The HLO involves enumerating houses, buildings, and basic amenities and serves as a foundational step before population counting.

Snow-bound and non-synchronous regions include Ladakh and parts of J&K.

These will have their population enumeration advanced to September 2026 to avoid harsh winter conditions.

The 2027 Census is set to be India’s first such fully digital exercise.

It will incorporate self-enumeration options and mobile apps for field workers.

The Census will also have caste enumeration for the first time since 1931.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, GoI, on Wednesday issued a gazette notification formalising aspects of the house listing phase and confirming the overall two-phase structure.

The massive operation, the largest such exercise in the world, got delayed from its original 2021 timeline due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors.

It is expected to provide critical data for policy planning, resource allocation, and delimitation processes in the country.

Mughal Road remains closed for 3rd consecutive day

Rajouri, Jan 7: The historic Mughal Road remained closed to vehicular traffic for the third consecutive day on Wednesday as snow clearance operations by the Border Roads Organisation continued amid fresh snowfall.

Officials said the road was closed on Monday morning following fresh snowfall, with heavy accumulation reported along several stretches, particularly near Pir Ki Gali.

They said light snowfall was also recorded on Tuesday morning, which added to the accumulated snow and further delayed restoration efforts.

BRO officials said snow clearance work is underway at full pace, but progress has been hampered by inclement weather conditions.

“The work is continuing, but fresh snowfall and adverse weather are causing delays,” officials said.

On Mufti Sayeed’s 10th anniversary, Mehbooba says father chose Kashmiris’ dignity over power

On Mufti Sayeed’s 10th anniversary, Mehbooba says father chose Kashmiris’ dignity over power

Bijbehara, Jan 7: Peopl.es Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said her father and party founder, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, consistently placed the dignity of Kashmiris above political power, even when he had opportunities to form governments.

Speaking at Bijbehara on the 10th death anniversary of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Mehbooba became emotional and broke down while recalling her father’s political legacy, pausing several times as she addressed party workers and supporters.

“Here, people often choose power, but my father always chose his people over power,” Mehbooba said. “I followed Mufti Sahib’s path because I believed he had a foresight that very few leaders in Kashmir possessed.”

She said Mufti Mohammad Sayeed believed in direct engagement with people and never pursued office for its own sake.

“He never chased the chair; he chased the people,” she said. “That is why he is remembered with respect even today.”

Mehbooba said her father envisioned a Kashmir where people could live with dignity and freely express their views.

“He believed in dialogue and outreach – whether within Kashmir or across the border,” she said.

Recalling past political developments, she said Mufti Sayeed’s credibility led national parties to approach him despite his limited electoral strength.

“We had only 16 seats in 2002, yet the Congress leadership at the Centre approached him to discuss government formation,” she said. “That respect came from his credibility and the trust he enjoyed.”

She said a similar situation arose in 2014.

“When we got 28 seats, the BJP approached us, but Mufti Sahib again put conditions that our special status would be protected, talks would be initiated with separatists and Pakistan, and routes across Kashmir would be opened before going for alliance,” she said.

Mehbooba said she travelled “to every village, forest and mountain” to carry forward her father’s political vision.

“People did not understand him then, but today they realise that had he been alive, we would not be in a situation where people are jailed for speaking the truth and dissent is silenced,” she said.

She said her father’s legacy was rooted in dignity and respect for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“He earned honour not just for himself, but for the people,” she said. “That is why his name continues to be remembered.”

Warning that unemployment and alienation among youth in Jammu and Kashmir have reached serious levels, Mehbooba said growing frustration was pushing many into despair.

“Our youth feel depressed and disconnected. That frustration is driving some to extreme choices,” she said.

Referring to recent incidents, she cited the Red Fort blast case, saying a doctor from Pulwama died after carrying out the attack, while another man from Qazigund self-immolated following the arrest of his son.

“These are not isolated incidents; they depict the deep despair in society,” she said.

She also said hundreds of Kashmiri youths were lodged in jails within and outside the Union Territory.

“When I approached courts seeking their shifting to jails in Kashmir and the release of those detained without justification, I was mocked,” she said. “If I do not speak for these poor people, who will?”

Mehbooba launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of remaining silent on issues affecting ordinary people, particularly land acquisition and orchardists.

“He has an absolute majority with 50 seats and representation in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, yet he remains silent on issues that hurt the poor,” she said. “From morning till evening, he only targets the PDP.”

She alleged that orchards and trees were being cut in the name of development and said the chief minister did not understand the economic and emotional value of land for ordinary families.

“Land here means survival,” she said. “That is why silence on these issues is unacceptable.”

Mehbooba urged the government to ensure employment and rehabilitation for locals before acquiring land for railway and other infrastructure projects.

“Before taking even an inch of land, the government must guarantee jobs for affected families,” she said.

She said the PDP posed no challenge to the present government.

“People have already given everything to him (Omar) by giving more than 50 seats. The PDP is nowhere today,” she said.

Earlier, Mehbooba Mufti, along with PDP leaders and workers, paid tributes to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and offered Fateha Khwani at his ancestral graveyard in Darashikoh garden in Bijbehara town.

‘Ordered relocation of Reasi students,’ says Omar, slams right-wing outfits for celebrating institution shutdown

‘Ordered relocation of Reasi students,’ says Omar, slams right-wing outfits for celebrating institution shutdown

Jammu, Jan 07: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said he had directed an immediate relocation of students admitted to Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College to facilities in their hometowns.

The decision was announced a day after, the National Medical Commission’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) withdrew the letter of permission granted to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Jammu’s Reasi for non-compliance with minimum standards.

MARB said all students admitted to the college during the counselling for the academic year 2025-26 shall be accommodated in other medical institutions in Jammu and Kashmir as supernumerary seats by the competent authority of the Union Territory administration.

The MARB order came against the backdrop of an agitation by the Sangharsh Samiti, a recently formed conglomerate of right-wing organisations backed by the BJP, demanding cancellation of admissions to the college and seeking reservation of seats exclusively for students professing faith in Mata Vaishno Devi.

The outfit emerged soon after admissions for the inaugural MBBS batch of 50 students were completed through the NEET merit list.

Of the 50, 42 students were Muslims, mostly from Kashmir, seven Hindu students from Jammu, and one Sikh, a composition that raised hackles among the right-wing groups.

“I have directed the health minister (Sakina Itoo) to ensure that students affected by the withdrawal of permission to the Mata Vaishno Devi medical college are adjusted in government medical colleges near their homes,” the chief minister told reporters after addressing a district review meeting in Samba.

Abdullah said the process should be expedited so that the students can continue their medical education and later serve the people of the region.

The chief minister also denounced the celebration by the right-wing outfits of the permission withdrawal.

“What is this happiness about? The people in the country fight over getting the medical colleges, and here, a struggle was waged to shut down a medical college to play with the future of J&K children.

“If destroying children’s futures gives you happiness, then burst firecrackers … This time, out of 50 seats, 40 have gone to Kashmir. After one or two years, these 50 seats would have become 400 seats. Out of those 400 seats, possibly 200 or 250 children would have been from Jammu. Tomorrow, those children will not get medical college seats because you got the entire college shut down in the name of religion,” Abdullah said.

He said the children who will not get medical college seats in future because of the closure of this medical college. One should remember these “Sangharsh Samiti people forever,” he said.

In response to another question about the meeting, he said the performance in the Samba district has been good in terms of development and governance.

“There is a need to slightly speed up work in one or two areas. An inspection was carried out, and instructions were given. I hope that by March 31, when the financial year ends, the performance of Samba district will be noticeably better compared to other districts,” the chief minister said.

On recent controversies over the selection of players for football and cricket teams, mostly from Kashmir, Abdullah said, “As far as I am concerned, I do not care what religion a player belongs to. I only care that the performance of the Jammu and Kashmir team should be good.”

He said that tomorrow he would be meeting the U-16 cricket team, which lifted the Vijay Merchant Trophy for the first time, to personally congratulate each one of them.

“I hope that in the future as well, the teams formed from here will go forward and return successfully,” Abdullah said.

Is Leader of Opposition post covered in proposed law on removal of PM, CMs: Parliamentary Panel

New Delhi, Jan 07: Members of a parliamentary committee on Wednesday sought to know whether the office of the Leader of Opposition, a statutory post, came within the ambit of a proposed law for the removal of the prime minister and chief ministers from their posts if they fail to get bail within a month of arrest in serious criminal matters.

The Joint Committee, chaired by BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi, which is examining The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, The Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill and The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, heard the views of Law Commission Chairman Dinesh Maheshwari and others.

Vice Chancellor of National Law University, G S Bajpai, and the Vice Chancellor of Hyderabad-based National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), Sri Krishna Deva Rao, also appeared before the Joint Committee.

A parliamentary source said several members sought to know whether the Leader of Opposition could be removed from the post if he fails to secure bail within a month if arrested on serious criminal charges.

A leader from the opposition ranks made a strong pitch for inviting leaders of political parties, who are not part of the joint committee, to express their views on the three draft laws. A section of the committee members did not agree with the view expressed by the opposition member.

NCP leader Supriya Sule, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal and YSRCP member S Niranjan Reddy are the only opposition members in the 31-committee.

Congress, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, Shiv Sena-UBT and AAP have refused to be part of the committee contending that the bills violate the fundamental principle of law that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Sarangi told reporters that the experts who appeared before the Committee on Wednesday have been asked to make written submissions to the panel.
