Oppn storms LS over MGNREGA name change, Priyanka Gandhi flags threat to employment guarantee

New Delhi, Dec 16: As the Lok Sabha reconvened on Tuesday, the opposition mounted a strong protest against the introduction of the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G), 2025, which seeks to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

The Opposition MPs raised objections over the renaming of the flagship rural employment scheme and demanded that the proposed legislation be referred to a parliamentary panel for detailed scrutiny.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan introduced the Bill in the House, following which opposition members questioned the rationale behind removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from a landmark welfare scheme that has been in place for nearly two decades.

Leading the charge, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attacked the government over its move to replace MGNREGA, warning that the new Bill could “weaken” the original Act’s guarantee of 100 days of employment for the poorest sections of society.

She also questioned what she described as the Centre’s “obsession” with renaming long-standing schemes.

“MGNREGA was such a revolutionary Bill that when it was introduced, it was applauded by all political parties. This Bill plays a key role in strengthening the rural economy and gives 100 days of employment on demand,” Priyanka said while speaking in the House.

She pointed out that the existing Act was demand-driven, with allocations rising in response to the number of people seeking work.

In contrast, she argued, the VB-G RAM G fixes allocations on a yearly basis and shifts additional financial pressure onto states, as only 60 per cent of the expenditure would be borne by the Centre.

“The fundamental principle of our Constitution is that power should be in the hands of every individual, and that same fundamental principle is present in the Panchayati Raj system. This Bill, this legislation that is being introduced, is against that fundamental principle. The provisions of this Bill, which weaken the right to employment, a legal right, are contrary to our Constitution,” Priyanka said.

Amid loud sloganeering and repeated interruptions from both sides of the House, she also made an emotional appeal while defending the legacy of the scheme’s name.

“Mahatma Gandhi was not from my family, but he is like family to me, and this is the feeling of the entire country,” she said.

While firmly opposing the introduction of the Bill, Priyanka suggested that the government withdraw the proposed legislation and bring in a revised version, which should then be referred to a special committee for wider consultation and examination.

PM Modi proposes to double India-Jordan trade to USD 5 bn in next 5 years

Amman, Dec 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday sought to double India-Jordan bilateral trade to USD 5 billion over the next five years, as he invited Jordanian companies to take advantage of the country’s high economic growth and reap handsome returns.

Modi arrived in Jordan’s capital, Amman, on Monday for a two-day visit at the invitation of King Abdullah II. Jordan is the first leg of the Prime Minister’s four-day, three-nation tour, which will also take him to Ethiopia and Oman.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi and King Abdullah II addressed the India-Jordan Business Forum here. It was also attended by Crown Prince Hussein and Jordan’s Minister of Trade and Industry and Minister of Investment.

The two leaders acknowledged the importance of increasing business-to-business ties between the two countries, and called upon the industry captains from both sides to convert the potential and opportunities into growth and prosperity.

King Abdullah II noted that Jordan’s free trade agreements and India’s economic power could be combined to create an economic corridor between South Asia and West Asia and beyond.

Addressing the gathering, Modi said India’s success as the fastest-growing major economy, which is on course to become the third-largest economy in the world, offers immense business opportunities for its partners in Jordan and across the globe.

“The relationship between India and Jordan is one where historical trust and future economic opportunities come together,” he noted.

Modi invited Jordanian companies to partner with India and reap the benefits of its 1.4 billion consumer market, strong manufacturing base, and stable, transparent, and predictable policy environment.

Referring to the over 8 per cent growth of the Indian economy, he said India’s high GDP numbers are due to productivity-driven governance and innovation-led growth policies.

Noting that India is Jordan’s third-largest trading partner, the Prime Minister said that in the universe of business, numbers matter.

The Prime Minister further said that he was not here merely to count on numbers, but to build long-term, trusted partnerships that extend beyond statistics.

Jordan and India share a vibrant contemporary partnership, built on the strong edifice of their close civilisational ties, Modi added.

He also proposed doubling bilateral trade with Jordan to USD 5 billion over the next five years.

Modi highlighted opportunities for India-Jordan business collaboration in the fields of digital public infrastructure, IT, fintech, health-tech and agri-tech and invited start-ups from both nations to join hands in these areas.

Talking about India’s strength in the pharma and medical devices sectors and Jordan’s geographical advantage, he said the two nations can complement each other and make Jordan a reliable hub for West Asia and Africa in these fields.

He also underlined business opportunities for the two sides in the areas of agriculture, cold chain, food parks, fertilisers, infrastructure, automobile, green mobility and heritage and cultural tourism.

Speaking about India’s green initiatives, the Prime Minister suggested greater India-Jordan business collaboration in the fields of renewable energy, green financing, desalination and water recycling.

Business leaders from both countries in the fields of infrastructure, health, pharma, fertiliser, agriculture, renewable energy, textile, logistics, automobile, energy, defence, and manufacturing participated in the forum.

The delegation also comprised representatives of Ficci and the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, who have an existing MoU to promote trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Foggy weather to continue in Kashmir: MeT

Srinagar, Dec 16: As Kashmir continues to reel under shivering cold, the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, in its latest forecast on Tuesday, predicted light snowfall at the higher reaches of the valley from December 18 to 21.

According to a weather update shared by the MeT Srinagar, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy over the next two days, from December 16 to 17, across J&K.

From December 18 to 19, the weather is likely to witness a slight change, resulting in “very light snowfall” at isolated higher reaches of North and Central Kashmir. However, the rest of the valley will generally remain under cloud cover.

Following this change, the MeT said that during December 20 to 21, the Kashmir division will witness “partly to generally cloudy” weather, with the “possibility” of light snowfall over higher reaches. Meanwhile, the plain areas of J&K are likely to experience light rain towards the afternoon.

Moving ahead, cloudy weather is predicted to provide slight respite from the shivering cold from December 22 to 28.

The cloudy conditions are forecast to persist towards the end of the year, from December 29 to 31, coupled with likely light snowfall at the higher reaches of North and Central Kashmir.

An MeT spokesperson cautioned that “shallow to moderate” fog is likely to continue at many places in the Kashmir division and at isolated places in the Jammu division.

Mehbooba Mufti, Agha Ruhullah slam Nitish Kumar over burqa incident

Mehbooba Mufti, Agha Ruhullah slam Nitish Kumar over burqa incident

Srinagar, Dec 16: Senior political leaders from Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti and Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi have strongly condemned the conduct of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after a video surfaced showing him publicly pulling at a Muslim woman’s burqa during an official function, triggering widespread outrage and debate.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said she was deeply shocked by the incident, stating that she had personally known and admired Nitish Kumar in the past. In a sharply worded reaction, Mufti questioned whether the act should be attributed to old age or to what she described as the growing normalisation of publicly humiliating Muslims. She said the incident itself was disturbing, but what was even more unsettling was the manner in which those present appeared to watch the episode unfold as a form of entertainment. Mufti remarked that such behaviour was unbecoming of a person holding a high constitutional office and asked whether it was time for Nitish Kumar to step down.

Echoing similar concerns, National Conference Member of Parliament Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi described the Bihar Chief Minister’s conduct as indefensible and deeply disturbing. In a statement issued by his office, Ruhullah said that publicly pulling at a Muslim woman’s burqa amounted to a serious violation of dignity and personal respect. He asserted that Nitish Kumar owed the woman and the public an unconditional apology.

Ruhullah further said the erratic nature of the conduct raised alarming questions about the Chief Minister’s composure and mental clarity, which he said were essential for anyone occupying a constitutional position. He added that seeking medical attention and stepping aside from office was necessary in light of the incident.

The incident has drawn sharp reactions across political and social circles, with many calling for accountability and a clear response from the Bihar government. [KNT]

Jammu, Dec 16: Security forces searched for terrorists in Udhampur on Tuesday, a day after a policeman was killed in a gunfight there, a police officer said.

During the encounter on Monday, one terrorist was believed to have been injured, while two policemen suffered minor bullet wounds.

“The operation has been resumed in the area to track down the holed-up terrorists. The cordon has been further strengthened,” the officer told PTI.

A joint team of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of police, along with the army and the CRPF, is on the job with sniffer dogs, the officer said.

On Monday, forces got locked in a gunfight with terrorists in Soan village of the Majalta area in Udhampur.

The village was raided by the police on a tip-off about the presence of three terrorists, believed to be affiliated with the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit.

The encounter took place in the besieged village around 6 pm and continued for some time, resulting in injuries to one SOG jawan, Amjad Pathan, son of Bashrat Khan.

Pathan, a resident of Salva, Mendhar in Poonch district, later succumbed.

“A very small SOG team engaged the terrorists. Combing of the forest has been impeded due to darkness and treacherous terrain,” IGP Jammu Bhim Sen Tuti said in a social media post.

Udhampur’s Basantgarh lies on the route traditionally used by Pakistani terrorists to enter from the International Border in Kathua and move to Doda and Kishtwar districts in Jammu, and further into the Kashmir Valley.

The area has witnessed several encounters and terror incidents in the past.

Pathan’s body awaits a post-mortem, and once it has been done, a wreath-laying ceremony will be undertaken in Udhampur, the officer said.
