CM Omar Abdullah demands restoration of security control to elected govt

Jammu, Aug 14: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the situation following a massive cloudburst in a remote village in Kishtwar district. He said the news is “grim and accurate and verified information is slow in arriving”.

The cloudburst that struck the remote village of Chasoti killed at least 12 people and led to widespread damage, officials said.

“I just spoke to the Union Home Minister @AmitShah Sb to brief him about the developing situation in Kishtwar region of Jammu.

“The news is grim & accurate, verified information from the area hit by the cloud burst is slow in arriving. All possible resources are being mobilised from within and beyond J&K to manage the rescue operations,” the chief minister said in a post on X.

The chief minister also said he wouldn’t be speaking to channels or news agencies. “The government will share information as & when possible,” Abdullah said.

The disaster hit Chasoti, the last motorable village on the way to the Machail Mata temple, between 12 noon and 1 pm when a large number of people had gathered for the Machail Mata yatra. From there begins the 8.5 km trek to the shrine.

Statehood decision should not wait eight months, PM must announce tomorrow: Minister Satish

Srinagar, Aug 14: Minister Satish on Thursday said that there is no need to wait for eight weeks to decide on the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, a matter currently before the Supreme Court.

He was responding to today’s Supreme Court hearing, in which the court sought the Centre’s response within eight weeks on pleas seeking the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to media persons in Srinagar, Satish said, “The issue of statehood is out of our domain, but why wait for eight weeks? Whatever they are planning to give after eight weeks should be announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself tomorrow on the occasion of Independence Day.”

He added that if the Supreme Court has made such observations, it should consider every aspect, review the matter, and “return the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Earlier, Supreme Court on Thursday heard an application seeking directions for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, with Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan appearing for the applicants.

Gopal Sankaranarayanan told the court that it has been 21 months since the judgment directing the Election Commission of India to hold J&K assembly elections by September 30 and for statehood to be restored “as soon as possible,” yet no substantial movement has been made despite earlier assurances.

Counsel appearing for the former Chief Secretary of J&K supported the plea. Gopal Sankaranarayanan further urged the court to list all related matters the same day, stating that if any clarification is required, a bench should be constituted.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed the plea, arguing that the miscellaneous application was “not maintainable,” pointing out that costs have been imposed in similar matters earlier, and stressing that “peculiar conditions emerge in this part of the country” when elections are held. He requested the matter be taken up after eight weeks.

The Chief Justice of India B R Gavai, heading the bench, observed, “Ground situations must be considered, you cannot ignore incidents like Pahalgam.” The Solicitor General maintained that steps toward restoring statehood are underway but said the situation on the ground remains complex. (KNC)

Rajouri’s 14-Year-Old boxer wins Gold at sub-junior Nationals

Jammu, Aug 14: 14-year-old Mohammad Yasser from Rajouri has won a gold medal at the 4th Sub-Junior National Boxing Championship, held in Noida, Uttar Pradesh from August 6 to 13.

A trainee at the Khelo India Boxing Centre in Rajouri, Yasser impressed with his determination, discipline, and sharp technique. Competing in the 52–55 kg weight category, he won five consecutive bouts, defeating Nelson Khwairakpam of Manipur in a gripping final to claim the national title.

Yasser’s victory is especially inspiring given his background. Raised by his mother, Nasim Akhtar, who works as a domestic help, Yasser lost his father six years ago. Despite limited resources, his dedication to the sport has driven him to national success.

“I didn’t even know he had won until someone came and told me,” Nasim shared with local media. “We don’t even have a mobile phone at home. Yasser is very hardworking, and this is all because of his focus and commitment

Yasser’s coach, Ishtaq Malik, a former national-level boxer himself, played a pivotal role in grooming the young athlete. The victory has sparked widespread celebration in Rajouri and beyond. Rajan Sharma, veteran boxer and former Divisional Sports Officer, J&K Sports Council, hailed the achievement, calling it a “moment of immense pride for the entire Union Territory.”

Jammu increases security measures ahead of Independence day, Border areas on high alert

IGP Jammu reviews security in Reasi, Ramban ahead of Kashmir rail link inauguration

Jammu, Aug 14: Security was intensified across the Jammu region on Thursday with increased checking, patrolling and area domination ahead of the Independence Day celebrations, officials said.

A multi-tier security grid of the Army, BSF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police has been kept on high vigilance along the Line of Control and International Border to foil any nefarious designs from across the border, they said.

Quick Response Teams (QRTs) of the J-K Police have been deployed in Jammu city, they said, adding that checking and frisking have been intensified at entry and exit points in every district and on important roads.

Deployment of police and central paramilitary forces along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and Jammu-Pathankot Highway have also been strengthened, the officials said.

Security has been beefed up in all the 10 districts of the Jammu region, with more focus on area domination and deployments in militancy-infested districts of Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar, Doda, Udhampur, and Kathua, they said.

The main Independence Day in Jammu function will be held at Maulana Azad Stadium, where Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary will unfurl the Tricolour and take the salute.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will preside over the Independence Day main function to be held at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar.

Special arrangements have been put in place around the venue of the main function, they said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Udhampur Sandeep Bhat said, “In view of the Independence Day celebrations tomorrow, we have implemented strict security measures across the district, from national highways to hilly areas like Basantgarh and Latti.”

“CRPF and CISF personnel are deployed, with sniffer dogs and anti-sabotage checks in place. Security along the highway is alert,” he said.

Border grid security has been tightened further, and all border roads are being kept under strict watch, the officials said, adding that important border roads and highways are being monitored through CCTV.

Police and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) companies have been deployed and assigned the task of intensified checking and area domination, patrolling round the clock, they said.

The police have issued a security advisory in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, seeking people’s cooperation during checking and asking them to report to security agencies any suspicious movement or object.

Court should take cognisance of vote ‘fraud’ charges: Mehbooba

0
‘Let the people judge for themselves’, says Mehbooba after Speaker denies rejecting PDP resolution on 13 July

Srinagar, Aug 14: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said the Supreme Court should take suo motu cognisance of “electoral fraud” charges levelled by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi as safeguarding the integrity of elections must take precedence over all other concerns.

Noting that the Supreme Court has demonstrated a commendable degree of empathy by constituting a three-member bench to deliberate on the rights of stray dogs, she said this move reflects the nation’s core values, a commitment to protect not only its citizens but also the voiceless and uncared animals that share our spaces.

She said in light of this, there is a “growing public expectation” that the court will also take suo motu cognizance of the recent revelations made by the Congress leader concerning the fundamental right to vote of 140 crore Indians.

“Allegations with documentary proof of widespread irregularities in the electoral process strike at the very heart of our democracy and demand urgent judicial scrutiny.

Safeguarding the integrity of elections must take precedence over all other concerns if we are to preserve our identity as a democratic nation,” she said.

Gandhi last week cited data to allege that more than one lakh votes were ‘stolen’ in the Mahadevpura assembly constituency of Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha in the 2024 elections, resulting in the defeat of a Congress candidate.

The Election Commission had directed Gandhi to give a written declaration on his claims.

HC upholds quashing of Dr Mushtaq’s additional charge as Director Family Welfare

HC restores permission to Ludhiana trust to run Langar at Panchtarni

Srinagar, Aug 14: The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has upheld the Central Administrative Tribunal decision to strike down the Government order assigning Dr Mushtaq Ahmad Rather additional charge of Director, Family Welfare, MCH and Immunization, J&K, holding the posting in violation of cadre eligibility rules.

A Division Bench of Justice Sanjeev Kumar and Justice Sanjay Parihar dismissed Dr Rather’s writ petition, noting that he belongs to the J&K Medical (Gazetted) Service and not to the feeder cadre prescribed under the J&K Health and Family Welfare (Gazetted) Service Recruitment Rules, 2013.

The court said the post of Director, Family Welfare, can be filled only from Class-II Categories “A” and “B” of the Health and Family Welfare Service through promotion or direct recruitment, with no provision for transfer from another service. Dr Rather was serving as Director, Coordination, New Medical Colleges at the time of the additional charge order issued on December 23, 2024.

The dispute arose when Dr Poonam Sethi, then Deputy Director (Schemes), challenged the appointment before the CAT, which on March 26 this year quashed the order and directed the charge be given to the senior-most eligible officer within the cadre.

The Government defended its choice by citing Dr Rather’s previous stints as Director Health Services Kashmir, Director AIDS Control Society and Director Coordination of New Medical Colleges. However, the Bench ruled that administrative convenience cannot override statutory provisions and criticised the Health Department for not holding timely promotion committee meetings.

In its ruling, the Bench observed that even an ineligible officer within the cadre can challenge the appointment of an outsider if the move appears arbitrary or suggests favouritism, adding that if an ineligible officer must be chosen, preference should be given to one from within the same service.

The petition was accordingly dismissed. [KNT]

SC seeks Centre’s response on plea for restoring JK’s statehood

Five petitioners write to Chief Justice, seek immediate restoration of J&K’s statehood

New Delhi, Aug 14: The Supreme Court on Thursday sought a response from the Centre on a plea seeking the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran also took note of the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, that there were “several considerations which go into the decision-making process”.

It listed the plea, filed by academician Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and socio-political activist Ahmad Malik, for hearing after eight weeks.

“You cannot ignore what happened in Pahalgam… It is for Parliament and the Executive to take a decision,” the CJI said when senior lawyer Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for Bhat, sought an early hearing.

On December 11, 2023, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the revocation of Article 370, which accorded a special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, even as it ordered that assembly elections be held in the union territory by September 2024 and its statehood be restored “at the earliest”.

Last year, a plea was filed in the top court seeking directions to the Centre for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir within two months.
