NIA searches former TMC MLA Saukat Mollah’s house in Bhangar blast case

Kolkata, Jun 04: The National Investigation Agency on Thursday searched the residence of former TMC MLA Saukat Mollah in South 24 Parganas district in connection with its probe into a bomb blast in Bhangar ahead of the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, officials said.

An NIA team, accompanied by Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel, arrived at Mollah’s residence at Moukhali in the Bhangar area in the morning and carried out extensive searches.

Around 10 vehicles were part of the operation, sources said, adding that NIA teams also visited several houses in Bamunia village, where the explosion had occurred.

According to an official, Mollah was not present at the residence when the agency team arrived. His son, Imran Mollah, was brought to the premises by investigators and accompanied the NIA team during the search, the official added.

The searches are linked to the agency’s investigation into a bomb blast in Bamunia village of Bhangar in which one person was killed, and several others were injured. Following the incident, the Indian Secular Front (ISF) had demanded an NIA probe into the case.

One person was killed, and three others sustained critical injuries in a crude bomb explosion at Dakshin Bamunia village in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on March 19, while bombs were allegedly being made there.

The agency also searched Saukat Mollah’s office as part of the operation. Saukat Mollah’s wife and daughter reached the residence while the searches were underway.

Officials said investigators were examining documents and collecting information relevant to the blast case.

Security arrangements were tightened in and around the area, with local police deployed outside the residence.

The NIA had earlier taken over the investigation into the blast and arrested several people, including TMC leader Wahidul Islam, in connection with the case.

Searches were conducted at the residence of Wahidul Islam, while investigators also visited the homes of individuals who had transported the injured to hospital after the blast.

“It is aimed at gathering evidence and verifying information connected to the ongoing investigation,” he added.

Mollah, who represented the Canning Purba Assembly constituency and won elections in 2016 and 2021, recently had his security cover withdrawn by the West Bengal government.

Portugal, Austria among 5 nations elected to UN Security Council; Germany suffers setback

United Nations, Jun 04: Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for the 2027-28, with India saying it looks forward to working closely with them during their two-year tenure.

In a closely watched and contested election on Wednesday, the 193-member UN General Assembly elected the five new non-permanent members who will replace Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia when their terms conclude at the end of 2026.

India congratulated the newly elected members.

“Hearty congratulations to the newly elected @UN Security Council members,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni said in a post on X.

“We look forward to working closely with each of you during your 2027-28 term and wish you all success,” he added.

The five new non-permanent UNSC members were elected by secret ballot for the two-year term beginning January 1, 2027, and ending December 31, 2028.

In a major setback for Germany, the European country lost the election in the Western European and Other States category, securing 104 votes. Portugal (134 votes) and Austria (131 votes) won the election for the two seats allocated to the group.

The results were announced by the President of the UN General Assembly and former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

Speaking to reporters at the UN headquarters later, German Minister for Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul described the result as a “real disappointment.”

“It’s a bitter defeat. This is an intense competition. Germany entered late, meaning we were at a disadvantage from the start, and we see that today clearly, it was not possible to make up for lost ground,” Wadephul said.

The minister acknowledged that Berlin’s support for Ukraine and its position on Israel may have cost it a UNSC seat.

“We gave everything we had, and yes, there are some issues we have always taken a clear position on. Not all UN member states share these positions. There is our rock-solid support for Ukraine. It is no secret that Russia does not want such a voice at the table in the Security Council, which campaigned against us.

“It also may have cost us votes that Germany must always assume a special responsibility for Israel with regard to the Middle East conflict. We will continue to live up to our historical responsibility even if at the time we criticise specific policies of the current government,” Wadephul said.

In the two seats for African and Asia-Pacific States, Zimbabwe got 182 votes while Kyrgyzstan got 142 votes.

Kyrgyzstan, which will sit on the Council for the first time, emerged victorious after four intense rounds of voting, defeating the Philippines by a vote of 142-49.

In the Latin American and Caribbean States category, Trinidad and Tobago got 181 votes.

The powerful UN Security Council comprises 15 members, including five permanent veto-wielding members — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Next year, the newly-elected members will join the P5 nations and Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia, and Liberia, who will remain on the Council through the end of 2027.

India last sat at the UNSC horseshoe table as a non-permanent member in 2021-22, and Delhi has declared its candidature for the 2028-29 term.

Wagoora Panchayat wins National Panchayat Award 2025

In a landmark achievement for rural J&K, Wagoora Gram Panchayat in Budgam district has secured the third position at the national level for the prestigious Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (DDUPSVP) 2025, winning a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh.

The award, conferred under the category “Socially Just and Socially Secured Panchayat,” was presented during the National Panchayat Awards function at the Scope Convention Centre in New Delhi. Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh and Union Minister of State for Panchayati Raj, Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel, handed over the honour to a five-member delegation from Jammu and Kashmir’s Department of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj.

The honour recognises Wagoora’s outstanding performance in inclusive governance, social justice, and sustainable rural development. The Gram Panchayat emerged victorious after a rigorous national-level evaluation process that involved thousands of Panchayats from across the country.

Officials credited the achievement to the visionary leadership of Minister for Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Javid Ahmad Dar and the sustained guidance of Secretary, Rural Development Department & Panchayati Raj, Mohammad Aijaz Asad.

Under Aijaz Asad’s leadership, the department adopted a focused strategy to strengthen Panchayati Raj Institutions, improve grassroots governance, and ensure effective implementation of welfare programmes. Regular reviews, handholding of Panchayats, and continuous monitoring were instrumental in enabling Wagoora to achieve this national distinction.

The award reflects the collective efforts of Panchayati Raj Institutions, elected representatives, local communities, and field functionaries in strengthening grassroots democracy across J&K.

Officials termed the achievement as a testament to the growing strength of participatory planning, social welfare delivery, community-led development, and effective local governance in the Union Territory.

The Rs 25 lakh prize money is expected to be utilised for further developmental initiatives in the Gram Panchayat, setting a benchmark for others to follow.

Wagoora’s achievement is especially significant given the scale of competition and the rigorous evaluation process, which goes far beyond documentation and self-reporting. Unlike conventional award processes, the DDUPSVP 2025 evaluation involved a dedicated inspection team from the Ministry of Panchayati Raj that physically visited Wagoora Gram Panchayat for an on-ground assessment.

The visiting team conducted a thorough inspection of community assets, infrastructure, and service delivery mechanisms, verifying the actual status of welfare scheme implementation across multiple line departments.

The MoPR team assessed the functioning of key departments, including Health, Education NRLM and other associated agencies.

Israel, Lebanon agree to new ceasefire framework

Israel, Lebanon agree to new ceasefire framework

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a new ceasefire framework aimed at reducing hostilities along their border, according to a statement issued by the US State Department and reported by the BBC.

The agreement is contingent on a complete cessation of attacks by the Iran-backed Hezbollah group and the evacuation of Hezbollah operatives from areas between the Litani River and the Israeli border. The United States said it would assist in establishing pilot zones where the Lebanese Armed Forces would exercise exclusive control.

The announcement came after renewed violence on Wednesday, when Israeli strikes reportedly killed at least nine people in southern Lebanon while Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel, testing a fragile truce reached earlier this week.

According to the BBC, the two sides are scheduled to meet again on June 22 for further talks aimed at reaching a comprehensive agreement. Hezbollah had not publicly commented on the latest ceasefire announcement at the time of reporting.

The BBC reported that more than 3,500 people have been killed in Lebanon since the conflict escalated earlier this year, while over one million people have been displaced. Israel says 26 soldiers and four civilians have been killed during the fighting.

The newly formed PERT brings together specialists from multiple disciplines to ensure timely, evidence-based, and coordinated care, and comprises Dr Shais Jallu, Sr Consultant Pulmonology & Head Critical Care, Dr Waseem Ahmed, Sr Consultant and HOD Interventional Cardiology, Dr Showkat Ahmad Banday, Sr Consultant Interventional Radiology, Dr Danish Amin Khan, Sr Consultant Radiologist, along with the anaesthesia team and emergency team.

Acute Pulmonary Embolism is a medical emergency that can lead to sudden deterioration, heart failure, and death if not recognized and treated promptly, with common symptoms including sudden onset shortness of breath, chest pain particularly on deep breathing, rapid heartbeat or palpitations, unexplained dizziness or fainting, cough sometimes with blood-stained sputum, and swelling or pain in the legs due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Unfortunately, these symptoms are often mistaken for other conditions, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment, whereas early recognition and prompt medical attention can significantly improve outcomes and save lives. The PERT model has been successfully adopted in leading centres worldwide and enables specialists to rapidly assess each patient and formulate an individualized treatment strategy, with treatment options including anticoagulation, catheter-directed thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy, surgical pulmonary embolectomy, and advanced hemodynamic support depending on the severity of the clot burden and the patient’s condition.

Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Director, Amandeep BR Medicity, said, “Acute Pulmonary Embolism demands immediate, coordinated action because delays can be fatal. With J&K’s first PERT, launched in partnership with Ujala Cygnus Hospitals, we have built a system where critical decisions are made in real time by experts across specialties. This initiative reflects our shared vision to bring world-class emergency cardiopulmonary care to J&K and ensure that no life is lost due to lack of timely intervention. Together, we are raising the standard of care for patients in the region.”

Speaking on the occasion, the PERT team emphasized that a coordinated multidisciplinary approach is crucial in managing acute pulmonary embolism, particularly in high-risk and critically ill patients, and the establishment of J&K’s first PERT represents a major step forward in providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for this frequently underdiagnosed condition.

With round-the-clock availability of advanced imaging, interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, cardiac surgery, critical care, and anaesthesia services, Ujala Cygnus Hospitals, in partnership with Amandeep BR Medicity, is now uniquely positioned to offer rapid and comprehensive management of acute pulmonary embolism, improving survival and reducing long-term complications. Drug abuse will cost you everything you cherish: SSP Baramulla

Drug abuse will cost you everything you cherish: SSP Baramulla

Baramulla, Jun 3: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Gurinderpal Singh on Wednesday said that drug addiction would strip individuals of everything they value in life, including family, career, health, dignity and future prospects.

Addressing a gathering during a day-long seminar on “Nasha Mukht J&K” at Government Degree College (Boys), Baramulla, themed “Substance Abuse Among Youth: Legal Implications and Mental Health Consequences – Exploring Prevention, Intervention and Community Responsibility,” SSP Baramulla said the fight against drugs was a battle of self-control and personal responsibility.

“Everything you cherish will be taken away from you if you get into drugs. The substance abuse offers only temporary pleasure but leaves behind long-term destruction,” SSP Baramulla said. Addressing to young students, he said today’s youth face uncertainty regarding careers, employment and identity, making them vulnerable to harmful influences. “True strength lies not in physical power but in impulse control which is the ability to resist temptations and delay gratification,” he said. “Drugs are nothing but a moment of pleasure or a few hours of pleasure. If you can delay gratification and control your impulses, you have already won the game of life,” he added.

SSP Baramulla cautioned students that addiction not only destroys health and relationships but also permanently damages professional opportunities.

He warned that involvement in drug-related offences, including possession, transportation or sheltering those involved in narcotics trade, could result in criminal prosecution and adversely affect future employment prospects.

“A criminal record can follow an individual for life. It can prevent you from securing government jobs and increasingly affect opportunities in the private sector as well,” he added.

SSP Gurinderpal Singh further highlighted the legal consequences under anti-narcotics laws and said even possession of small quantities of drugs constitutes a criminal offence. He urged students not to assist friends involved in substance abuse or narcotics trafficking and instead encourage them to seek help. “True loyalty is not hiding a friend’s mistakes but helping him overcome them. If your friend is involved in drugs, persuade him to seek treatment and inform family members or authorities when necessary,” he said.

SSP Baramulla also linked the drug trade to broader security concerns, claiming that profits generated through narcotics trafficking contribute to activities aimed at destabilising society. He further urged young people to view the anti-drug campaign as a personal struggle for their future happiness, career and well-being. “You all should reject substance abuse and make responsible choices,” he said. Staff Secretary GDC Baramulla, Prof Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo and Public Prosecutor NCB Srinagar, Aftab Jeelani also spoke at the occasion and urged the students to stay away from substance abuse.
