Trump acknowledges calling Netanyahu ‘crazy’ and says Israel is complicating peace talks with Iran

Beirut, Jun 3: President Donald Trump acknowledged criticising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “crazy” in a phone call that involved expletives, saying he was “a little bit perturbed” that Israel’s fighting with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon was holding back peace talks with Iran.

But even as the US president conceded the tensions in an interview released Wednesday, he insisted that his relationship with Netanyahu was solid and that they connected, in part, because they are both “wartime” leaders.

“We’ve worked very well together. I like Bibi a lot. And I work very well with him,” Trump told The New York Post’s “Pod Force One.”

In an interview on the American business-news channel CNBC, Netanyahu responded that he and Trump sometimes have “tactical disagreements” but have “common goals” and “agree on the main things.”

“He respects me. I respect him. We always find a way to work out our differences,” the prime minister said.

The president’s comments about the Monday call offered a sign of the growing pressure he faces to resolve the Iran war as higher energy prices and economic uncertainty threaten Republican prospects in the midterm elections and hamper global commerce.

Talks have dragged on for weeks as mediators seek to extend a fragile ceasefire into a more enduring truce. The negotiations are further strained by Israel’s broadening war with the Iranian-backed militia group in Lebanon. The conflicts have become increasingly intertwined as Iran insists that any potential truce in the war there must also quell the fighting in Lebanon.

Trump does not commit to timeline for ending Iran war

Trump remained noncommittal about a timeline for settling the Iran conflict, saying the Strait of Hormuz might stay blocked through the Labor Day holiday on Sept. 7. He has insisted that Iran stop any efforts that could lead to a nuclear weapon and that the strait be reopened for shipments of oil and natural gas.

“I don’t know. I mean, I think it could be (closed through Labor Day), but I think it’s unlikely. I think that we’ll have it. I think this will resolve itself fairly quickly,” Trump said.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his late father, is “involved” in peace talks, Trump added.

“They have a lot of respect for him,” the president said in the interview.

Trump said that Khamenei is not doing well due to wounds sustained in an airstrike, but “they say he’s giving approval because that’s the way it has been for a long, long time.” Khamenei’s father was killed in an airstrike when the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran at the end of February.

Meanwhile in the Persian Gulf region, Kuwait briefly shut its main airport Wednesday after Iranian drones hit a passenger terminal building, killing one person and wounding dozens. It was the latest in the back-and-forth attacks by Tehran and Washington that have tested the ceasefire.

The strike again brought home the risks to residents and travelers in Gulf countries that had considered themselves relative safe havens before the war, now in its fourth month.

Path to a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon is obscured by new strikes

The path toward a lasting ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah remained unclear as hostilities continued in Lebanon.

An Israeli strike Wednesday hit a car on a busy highway just south of Beirut, hours before the second day of talks between Lebanon and Israel in Washington were set to take place.

The strike in Khaldeh came without warning, and it was not immediately clear if the person targeted was killed.

Israel and Lebanon on Monday reached a U.S.-brokered agreement in which Israel would not strike Beirut’s southern suburbs and Hezbollah would end its attacks on northern Israel.

The agreement was made hours after Israel announced that it was going to launch strikes across the sprawling urban neighborhoods near the Lebanese capital in what would have been the most intense strikes since a nominal ceasefire went into effect on April 17.

The State Department said progress was made during the first day of talks on Tuesday. Lebanon hopes to widen the scope of the ceasefire so it becomes comprehensive across the country. Israel wants to disarm Hezbollah immediately before the Israeli military ends its operations in Lebanon and withdraws its troops from dozens of villages and towns.

Not long after the strike on Khaldeh, the Israeli military said it intercepted what it called a hostile aircraft coming from southern Lebanon, but it did not immediately blame Hezbollah. Hezbollah has not claimed a cross-border attack since the agreement.

Israeli military warning rattles coastal city

Israeli strikes over southern Lebanon continued, especially in and around the battered cities of Tyre and Nabatiyeh. Two overnight strikes near Tyre, a coastal city, killed four Syrians and two Palestinians.

Israel warned the Christian neighborhoods in Tyre that Hezbollah members were among them. Many Lebanese Shiite Muslims fled to those areas in recent days because they were spared from the aerial bombardment along the Mediterranean coast.

After the warning, the Lebanese army deployed to the Christian district of Tyre in an effort to prevent Israeli attacks there and to show that Hezbollah has no armed presence in the area.

Israel launched an invasion of southern Lebanon days after the latest war was sparked on March 2, when Iran-backed Hezbollah fired rockets toward northern Israel in solidarity with Iran. Israeli troops have pushed deeper into Lebanon over the past week, as Hezbollah continues to claim rocket and drone attacks.

The latest round of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has killed 3,468 people in Lebanon and displaced 1.2 million people. According to Netanyahu’s office, at least 27 Israeli soldiers and a defense contractor have been killed in or near southern Lebanon. Two civilians have also been killed in northern Israel.

Strike on village kills most of a family

Many residents of southern Lebanon remained in villages near the hostilities or returned to areas where strikes occurred after evacuation warnings.

The Al-Abdallah family returned to their home in Marwanieyh, which they left because they thought the village was unsafe following earlier strikes. A day later, two rockets hit the home, bringing down the three-story building and killing six family members, said the brother of Hassan Al-Abdallah, who was killed.

Ahmed Al-Abdallah, 13, was thrown away from the building by the force of the blasts and was the only member of his family to survive. His uncle, Eissa Al-Abdallah, said the boy has two broken legs and shrapnel wounds all over his body.

“What good is talking now? They are gone, and nothing will bring them back,” the uncle told The Associated Press in a phone call Tuesday. “This land costs blood.”

India–Oman CEPA comes into force, to open new opportunities for textile MSMEs

New Delhi, June 3: The India–Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) has come into force on 1st June 2026, marking a major milestone in strengthening the economic and strategic partnership between the two countries. The Agreement was signed on 18 December 2025 by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and H.E. Qais bin Mohammed Al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion of the Sultanate of Oman, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The CEPA provides significant market access opportunities for India’s textiles and apparel sector. Oman has accorded immediate duty-free access on all 945 textile and apparel tariff lines eliminating the existing 5% MFN duty and substantially enhancing the price competitiveness of Indian products in the Omani market. Moreover, immediate zero duty access by elimination of the 5% MFN duty has also been provided on exports of handicraft lines. This places India in a strong position to expand its exports and consolidate its presence in a key Gulf market.

India’s exports of textiles, apparel and handicrafts to Oman stood at USD 95.1 million in FY 2025–26, while Oman imports textiles and apparel worth approximately USD 598 million annually. With India currently accounting for around 11% of Oman’s total imports and ranking as its third-largest supplier, the CEPA provides a clear opportunity to significantly scale up exports and gain greater market share. Indian exporters are well-positioned to tap into growing demand in Oman across key segments such as apparel, made-ups, carpets, and fabrics, particularly in value-added and design-oriented products.

The Agreement incorporates a modern and fully digitalized Certificate of Origin (CoO) framework, enabling seamless electronic exchange of origin certificates between the two countries, reducing transaction costs, improve efficiency, and facilitate smoother trade flows.

CEPA shall also strengthen cooperation in intellectual property rights, reaffirming both countries’ rights under the WTO TRIPS Agreement and ensuring national treatment in the protection of IPR. The Agreement provides for recognition of Geographical Indications (GIs), which is expected to enhance the visibility and marketability of India’s GI-tagged handloom and handicraft products in the Omani market, further promoting “Brand India” globally.

The entry into force of the India–Oman CEPA is expected to boost bilateral trade, deepen supply-chain linkages, and create new opportunities for Indian exporters, artisans and MSMEs. By providing comprehensive duty-free access and a transparent trade framework, the Agreement is set to accelerate India’s textile exports to Oman and reinforce its position as a competitive and reliable supplier in the global market.

In the midst of the geopolitical developments in the West Asia, Oman has emerged as a gateway for trade with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, by bypassing the chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz though ports like Sohar. The bilateral trade agreement would further strengthen a broader connectivity with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations and the East African region.

Govt invites applications for formation of National Sports Tribunal

Govt invites applications for formation of National Sports Tribunal

New Delhi, Jun 3: The Sports Ministry on Wednesday initiated the process of constituting the National Sports Tribunal for adjudication and resolution of sporting disputes in the country by inviting applications for two vacancies, setting June 18 as the deadline for submission.

In a circular issued by joint secretary (sports) Kunal, applications have been invited for membership of the Tribunal, which would be headquartered in the national capital.

“Eligible candidates should be persons of eminence in public life possessing wide knowledge and experience in sports, public administration, and law,” stated the notification.

The selection process will be carried out by a Search-cum-Selection Committee headed by the Chief Justice of India or a Supreme Court judge, designated by the CJI.

It will also include the Sports Secretary and the Secretary in the Ministry of Law and Justice.

“The Committee will scrutinise applications and assess candidates based on their qualifications, experience, and suitability for the position. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for personal interaction,” the ministry stated.

The final recommendation for appointment will be made on the basis of the overall evaluation of candidates, taking into account their qualifications, experience, and performance during the personal interaction.

The Tribunal’s total strength has not been specified by the government as yet. The rules for NST, however, have incorporated the provisions for techno-legal measures to ensure “digital implementation” through a dedicated portal.

Once in operation, the Tribunal’s orders would only be challengeable in the Supreme Court.

“It is aimed at reducing reliance on civil courts and ensuring independent, speedy, effective and cost-efficient disposal of disputes relating to sports governance and administration,” the ministry has stated.

If the appointed Chairperson or member of the Tribunal is a serving judge of the Supreme Court or a High Court, “he shall either resign or obtain voluntary retirement from his parent service before joining the Tribunal.”

According to the Sports Ministry, over 350 cases are currently in progress in various courts of the country over issues ranging from selection to election, significantly hampering the progress of athletes and NSFs.

The setting up of a National Sports Tribunal promises to end this for good as it would have “all the powers of a civil court.”

Bear cubs rescued from cave in Tral, reunited with mother captured a day earlier

Pulwama, June 3: A day after a large bear was tranquilized and captured in Aligund village of Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, wildlife officials on Wednesday rescued two bear cubs from the same cave where the animal had reportedly been living and shifted them to a natural habitat where they were reunited with their mother.

The latest operation unfolded after wildlife personnel, acting on information gathered during Tuesday’s rescue, returned to the site amid concerns that young cubs could have been left behind inside the cave.

Yesterday, residents of Aligund had alerted the Wildlife Department after spotting a large bear in the area. A rescue team subsequently launched an operation, tranquilized the animal and shifted it to a suitable habitat away from human habitation.During follow-up monitoring of the area, officials discovered two cubs inside the cave believed to be the offspring of the captured bear.

Wildlife teams carefully extracted the cubs and transported them from the village before facilitating their reunion with the mother bear in the wild.

Officials told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the operation was conducted to ensure the survival of the cubs, which could have faced significant risk if left unattended following the relocation of the adult bear.

The successful rescue brought relief to villagers who had expressed concern both over the presence of the animals near homes and the welfare of the young cubs after the mother bear’s capture.

The incident also highlighted the increasing interface between wildlife and human settlements in forest-fringe areas of South Kashmir, prompting renewed calls for vigilance and timely reporting of wild animal sightings.

NSO releases guidelines for District Domestic Product estimates with base year 2022-23

New Delhi, June 3: The National Statistics Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India, had uploaded the Draft Guideline for Compilation of District Domestic Product (DDP) Estimates with Base Year 2022-23 on the official website of MoSPI on 07.04.2026 for consultation and feedback from stakeholders, including States/UTs, academic institutions, researchers and other users of Sub-State level Statistics.

After detailed examination of the comments and suggestions received from various stakeholders, the finalized “Guideline for Compilation of District Domestic Product (DDP) Estimates” are being released and uploaded on the official website of MoSPI.

The guideline provides a comprehensive and uniform framework for compilation of District Domestic Product estimates across States and Union Territories with the objective of ensuring consistency, comparability and methodological standardization in district level economic estimates under the revised base year framework. The document elaborates the concepts, coverage, data sources, estimation procedures and methodologies for compilation of Gross District Domestic Product (GDDP), Net District Domestic Product (NDDP) and Per Capita Income at district level.

The guideline primarily emphasizes the compilation of DDP estimates using the bottom-up approach, wherever feasible, based on availability of district-level data. In sectors where district-wise information is not adequately available, appropriate top-down approaches and suitable allocation indicators have been recommended to derive district level estimates in a consistent manner.

At present, 26 States/UTs are compiling District Domestic Product (DDP) Estimates. The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is making continuous efforts to onboard all States/UTs for compilation of DDP estimates in a uniform and comparable manner. The finalized guideline is expected to facilitate harmonization of estimation practices across States/UTs and strengthen the institutional framework for preparation of district level economic statistics.

The availability of reliable and comparable DDP estimates is expected to support decentralized planning, evidence-based policy formulation, regional development analysis and informed decision-making at the district levels. The guideline would also help States/UTs in improving data systems and strengthening statistical capacity for preparation of robust district level estimates.
