Race for Vice President begins

The poll body later said his name was found under a different EPIC number in the Digha constituency.

PM Modi, Amit Shah meet President Murmu separately

New Delhi, Aug 03: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday called on President Droupadi Murmu separately within hours at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here.

It was not known the reasons behind the subsequent meetings of the prime minister and the home minister with the President.

“Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan,” the Rashtrapati Bhavan said on ‘X’.

Hours later, the Rashtrapati Bhavan again wrote on ‘X’, “Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.”

The home minister also wrote on ‘X’ sharing a picture of his meeting with President Murmu. “Called on Hon’ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji at Rashtrapati Bhavan.”

However, there is no words so far from the prime minister’s office.

This was the first meeting of the prime minister with the President after his recent visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives.

The meetings came against the backdrop of the logjam in Parliament over the Opposition’s demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar ahead of the assembly elections in the state. Except discussions in both Houses on Operation Sindoor, Parliament has seen little business ever since the Monsoon session began on July 21.

Also, the Lok Sabha last week approved the extension of the President’s rule in Manipur for six more months, while the Rajya Sabha is yet to take up the motion for discussion. The President’s rule was imposed in the Northeastern state on February 13.

The prime minister’s meeting with the President also came days after US President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on exports from India and an unspecified penalty because of New Delhi’s purchases of Russian military equipment and oil.

The meetings also came nearly two weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21 tendered his resignation as vice president to the President citing health grounds.

The vice president also functions as the chairman of Rajya Sabha.

The Election Commission last week announced that election of vice president will take place on September 9.

The electoral college for the vice-presidential election comprises all elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and all members of the Lok Sabha.

Centre cuts prices of 35 essential medicines

Centre cuts prices of 35 essential medicines

New Delhi, Aug 03: In a move to make medicines more affordable for patients, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has reduced the retail prices of 35 essential drugs sold by leading pharmaceutical companies.

The formulations, which will now cost less, span a wide range of medicines including anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular, antibiotic, anti-diabetic and psychiatric medicines.

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers notified the order based on price regulation by the NPPA. The price reductions, which apply across drugs, are expected to bring relief to consumers, particularly those managing chronic conditions.

The key formulations covered by the price control order include fixed-dose combinations of Aceclofenac, Paracetamol and Trypsin Chymotrypsin, Amoxycillin and Potassium Clavulanate, Atorvastatin combinations and newer oral anti-diabetic combinations like Empagliflozin, Sitagliptin, and Metformin.

The price of one Aceclofenac-Paracetamol-Trypsin Chymotrypsin tablet manufactured by Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals and marketed by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories has now been fixed at Rs 13, while the same formulation marketed by Cadila Pharmaceuticals is now priced at Rs 15.01.

Similarly, a tablet containing Atorvastatin 40 mg and Clopidogrel 75 mg, widely used for cardiovascular conditions, is priced at Rs 25.61.

Oral suspensions for paediatric use – Cefixime and Paracetamol combinations  – have also been included, along with critical medications like Cholecalciferol drops for Vitamin D supplementation and Diclofenac Injection, which has been priced at Rs 31.77 per ml.

The official order states that retailers and dealers must display these updated price lists prominently in their premises. Failure to comply with the notified prices may attract penal provisions under the DPCO, 2013, and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, including recovery of overcharged amounts with interest.

The NPPA clarified that the prices fixed were exclusive of Goods and Services Tax (GST), which may be added, if applicable. Manufacturers are required to comply with all statutory requirements, issue updated price lists in Form V through the Integrated Pharmaceutical Database Management System and submit the information to the NPPA and state drug controllers.

Any prior price orders issued for the specified formulations and manufacturers stand superseded by this latest notification.

The NPPA, which functions under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, is the drug price regulator in India, responsible for fixing and revising prices of pharmaceutical products and monitoring the prices of both controlled and decontrolled drugs.

Army officer assaults SpiceJet employees over excess baggage issue at Srinagar airport: Airline

Srinagar, July 26: An Army officer allegedly assaulted four SpiceJet employees at Srinagar airport’s boarding gate on Saturday, leaving two of them grievously injured, the airline has said in a statement.

The incident took place during the boarding process for flight SG-386 from Srinagar to Delhi.

According to the airline, the altercation began when the passenger, who was carrying cabin baggage weighing 16 kg—more than double the 7 kg limit—was asked to pay the applicable charges.

The passenger allegedly refused and forcibly entered the aerobridge without completing mandatory boarding checks. He was escorted back by a CISF official, whereupon he reportedly turned violent.

SpiceJet said that the officer “grievously assaulted” four of its staff members with punches, kicks, and even a queue stand. One employee collapsed and fell unconscious after repeated blows, but the assault allegedly continued. Another suffered heavy bleeding from the nose and mouth after being kicked in the jaw while attempting to assist the unconscious colleague.

“The victims were rushed to hospital and are undergoing treatment for what the airline described as “grievous injuries.”

An FIR has been registered with the local police, and SpiceJet has initiated the process to place the passenger on the civil aviation “no-fly” list. The airline has also written to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, seeking appropriate action.

Airport CCTV footage of the incident has been secured and submitted to authorities.

“SpiceJet strongly condemns any act of violence against its employees and will pursue this matter to its fullest legal and regulatory conclusion,” a spokesperson said.
There was no immediate response from the Army or airport authorities regarding the allegations.

6.7-magnitude earthquake rattles Russia’s Kuril Islands

3.1 magnitude earthquake hits Kishtwar in J&K

Moscow, Aug 03: A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.7 struck Russia’s Kuril Islands on Sunday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The agency initially estimated the quake at 6.35 magnitude with a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), but later revised its findings.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center measured the earthquake at magnitude 7.0 and confirmed that no tsunami warning had been issued in the aftermath of the quake.

This latest tremor follows another earthquake of magnitude 6.2 recorded late Friday east of the Kuril Islands, as reported by India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS) on Saturday.

The seismic activity comes in the wake of a massive magnitude 8.7 earthquake that struck on July 30 — now tied for the sixth strongest ever recorded globally.

Despite the scale of the event, the Kremlin confirmed that there were no casualties in Russia.

Since the July 30 quake, the region has experienced over 125 aftershocks measuring 4.4 magnitude or higher.

Of these, at least three registered magnitudes above 6.0, including a strong 6.9-magnitude aftershock that occurred roughly 45 minutes after the initial earthquake.

Strong aftershocks continue to be felt across the Kuril Islands, with seismic experts noting that aftershocks are typically most intense and frequent in the first few hours to days following a major quake.

Their number and intensity generally taper off with time.

Shallow earthquakes like Sunday’s are often considered more dangerous than deeper ones due to their proximity to the Earth’s surface, which can cause more intense ground shaking and increase the risk of structural damage and casualties.

Meanwhile, the tsunami advisory issued for Hawaii after the massive July 30 quake has now been lifted.

Tsunami warnings that had been issued for Japan and parts of the US coastline were also downgraded to advisories.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the region remains on alert for further seismic activity.

Farooq Abdullah reiterates J-K statehood demand, says issue raised with PM on every meeting

Step toward reducing 'Dil ki Duri': Farooq Abdullah on train to Kashmir

Jammu, August 03: National Conference President Farooq Abdullah has once again criticised the Central government, accusing it of failing to address the long-standing demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.

Responding to a question by reporters regarding the hunger strike planned by the Jammu and Kashmir Congress on August 9, demanding statehood, Abdullah said that his party has been consistently raising the issue at the highest levels.

“We are already fighting for this. Whenever I met the Prime Minister, I raised this issue,” he said.
“We are not like them. We believe in the one who is the master of all. We will get our rights,” he added, expressing faith in the almighty.

When asked about demanding statehood from the central government, referring to the ongoing Parliament session, he said, “What can we expect from those who could not fill 4 Rajya Sabha seats, two assembly seats?”

Abdullah also addressed global economic concerns, especially the recent move by US President Donald Trump to impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods, calling it a looming disaster for India’s economy.

“BJP says whatever it wants to. Similarly, Trump also keeps shouting that he established peace here. Today, he has imposed a 25% tariff with a penalty. The material for our destruction is being prepared. All the industrialists are running away from here. They will work from Dubai…. The number of beggars here will increase…” he said.

He also took a swipe at those praising Trump, stating, “The names of the countries that are endorsing him for a Nobel Prize are hardly known to anyone. What does it matter if we also say that yes, he helped us, and he is sitting there as the Master of the World.”

“This will be a big destruction for us, whether anyone believes it or not. Do you know who will benefit? Bangladesh and Cambodia. They will be happy… It is a pity,” he added. (ANI)
