Couple quits high-paying Singapore jobs to embrace simpler life in India

New Delhi, Aug 01: Prioritising life over job, a couple has quit their high-paying jobs in Singapore to embrace a simpler life in India. A video of the said couple is going viral on social media platforms.

Shared on Instagram by a user named Sharmilaa, the clip offers a glimpse into their peaceful new lifestyle – children laughing and playing in open spaces, lush green fields, and a home nestled near the hills. It’s a stark contrast to the fast-paced city life they left behind. The woman revealed that three years ago, they made the bold decision to choose freedom over hustle and moved back to India with their little daughter, reports NDTV.

“3 years ago, we made a big decision – we left our high-paying jobs, moved back to India, and chose freedom over the hustle. Not a perfect plan… just a quiet decision to prioritise life over work,” she wrote in the caption of the post.

Sharmilaa revealed that she was tired of the fast-paced life and long work hours, so they decided to build a slower, peaceful life. Now, she works as a virtual assistant and mentors others interested in the field.

“I thought I’d earn Rs 20K a month doing something flexible as a Virtual Assistant. That was the only goal,” she said. But that small step turned into a steady business that brought both income and peace of mind. “A business that brings financial stability and lets me work a few hours a day, from anywhere… even from our little hill-view farm,” she wrote in the post.

Since being shared, Sharmilaa’s video has accumulated nearly 500,000 views and over 7,800 likes. In the comments section, users called the couple’s journey inspiring.

“Im also thinking to come back to home for this peace,” shared one user. “Its one best decision you made,” wrote another.

“such bliss. I’m glad many are taking a chance at life,” commented a third user.

Gold declines Rs 400 to Rs 97,620/10 g; silver tumbles Rs 2,500

Silver rallies to hit fresh peak, gold gains Rs 540 as Israel-Iran conflict intensifies

New Delhi, Aug 01: Gold prices dipped Rs 400 to Rs 97,620 per 10 grams in the national capital on Friday due to continuous selling by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The yellow metal of 99.9 per cent purity had closed at Rs 98,020 per 10 grams in the previous market session.

In the national capital, gold of 99.5 per cent purity dipped by Rs 300 to Rs 97,500 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Friday against the preceding session’s closing level of Rs 97,800 per 10 grams.

“Gold traded weak, tracking softness in the international markets, which hovered near USD 3,290 per ounce.

“The decline comes amid pressure from the US Federal Reserve’s continued hawkish stance and no indication of near-term interest rate cuts, which has dampened sentiment for safe-haven assets,” Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst, Commodity and Currency at LKP Securities, said.

As per the Sarafa Association, silver prices also extended the losses for the second straight day and tumbled by Rs 2,500 to Rs 1,09,500 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Friday.

The white metal had ended at Rs 1,12,000 per kg in the previous market close.

On the global front, spot gold went up 0.12 per cent to trade at USD 3,294.31 per ounce.

“Gold continued to trade with a negative bias on the last trading day of the week and is set to close lower on a weekly basis.

“This decline is attributed to an overall decrease in haven demand and a strong recovery in the US dollar, which surged to a nine-week high, gaining more than 2 per cent so far this week,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Spot silver slipped by 0.75 per cent to USD 36.44 per ounce in New York.

According to Manav Modi, Analyst, Precious Metal Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, silver prices stayed subdued amidst the fall in industrial metals while market participants remain cautious due to global tariff uncertainties.

“The US central bank held interest rates steady in the 4.25-4.50 per cent range, and Chair Jerome Powell’s comments after the decision dampened hopes for a September interest rate cut,” Modi said.

Market participants will focus towards US non-farm payroll data later in the day and any update regarding tariffs, he added.

Amarnath Yatra suspended till Aug 3 due to ‘urgent repair works’

Amarnath Yatra 2025: Number of pilgrims likely to cross four lakh mark

Srinagar, Aug 01: The annual Amarnath Yatra was Friday suspended till August 3 in the interest of safety of pilgrims as “urgent repair and maintenance works” are being undertaken on the twin routes of the pilgrimage following heavy rains, officials said.

On Friday morning, while the pilgrimage remained suspended from the Pahalgam route and no fresh batch of pilgrims was allowed to proceed to the cave shrine, the yatra was allowed from the Baltal route, they said.

However, owing to heavy rains, the yatra was later suspended from the Baltal route as well, they said.

The movement of the pilgrims remained suspended from the Bagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu for the second consecutive day.

“Due to the recent heavy rains, repair and maintenance works are required to be undertaken on the Baltal Axis of Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra route. In the interest of safety of the yatris, no Yatra will be allowed on 3rd August from the Baltal route also,” Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bidhuri said.

He said further updates will be issued in the due course of time.

Bhiduri said there have been recent heavy rains in yatra area on both Pahalgam and Baltal axis, and so, maintenance works of urgent nature are required to be carried out on the Baltal Axis following this heavy rainfall.

Torrential rains in Kashmir had rendered the roads unsafe, following which the pilgrimage was suspended on both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes on Wednesday.

The requisite repair and maintenance works are already being carried out on Pahalgam route of the Yatra, the divisional commissioner added.

On July 17, the yatra was suspended due to heavy rains at the twin base camps in Kashmir.

So far this year, more than 4.05 lakh yatris have paid obeisance at the Holy Cave shrine, he said.

A total of 1,44,124 pilgrims have departed from the Jammu base camp for the Valley since July 2, when Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch.

Last year, over 5.10 lakh pilgrims paid obeisance at the cave shrine, which houses a naturally formed ice lingam.

CM Omar Abdullah demands restoration of security control to elected govt

Ahmedabad, Aug 01: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for the restoration of security responsibilities to the elected government in the Union Territory. Speaking during his Gujarat visit, Omar Abdullah said it was unjust for elected representatives to be denied full authority, including over law and order.

Addressing a press conference at the Hyatt Hotel in Ahmedabad after attending the Travel Expo in Gandhinagar, Abdullah strongly criticised the continued Union Territory status of Jammu and Kashmir. “We are not some worthless people,” he remarked. “If people elect us to govern, then we must be entrusted with full responsibilities.”

His remarks came just days after he skipped a security review meeting chaired by the Union Home Minister in Delhi. When asked about his absence, Omar Abdullah responded, “Security falls under the domain of the Lieutenant Governor. That’s the reality. Still, I stay informed, I know where security forces are deployed and what steps are being taken. We are reopening tourist sites gradually and carefully.”

Omar Abdullah as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust also expressed frustration over the delay in restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. “We are the only unfortunate people in the country whose state was downgraded to a Union Territory. Everywhere else, UTs are being granted statehood, but we are still waiting,” he said.

Reflecting on his tenure as Chief Minister between 2009 and 2015, Abdullah said that his government had made significant strides in improving the security situation. “Militancy incidents and casualties among security forces had dropped. If we are given full charge again, we will make Kashmir safer than before,” he asserted. [KNT]

“When in doubt, cut out,” said Mussarat Zia, Director Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, in a post on X while encouraging customers to report any suspicion they may have about the authenticity of the products they have purchased.

The department has provided a helpline—0194-2472065—and an email contact at dir.handicraft@jk.gov.in for buyers who suspect they may have been misled into purchasing non-authentic items.

Udhampur, August 01: Several houses in Trilla Village of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir were severely damaged following heavy torrential rains that lashed the region.

Sharda Devi, a resident of the village, shared her ordeal after her house completely collapsed.
She said, “Our house has completely collapsed. Now, where will we keep our children? The place where we kept our belongings also has cracks. First, one wall fell, then another.”

Pawan Kumar, Sharda Devi’s son, whose house was reduced to rubble, urged the government to provide urgent relief.

“My house collapsed due to heavy rain. Please help us as much as you can and provide us with a place to live. We demand that the government give us accommodation, and until then, tents should be arranged for us,” he told ANI.

He added that the damage was not limited to his family alone. “Because of the heavy rain, 3-4 more houses also fell in our village,” he said, highlighting the scale of destruction caused by the ongoing monsoon in the hilly district.

Meanwhile, all the spillway gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district have been opened following heavy rainfall. The district authorities issued warnings to the general public not to go near the riverbank.

“I received an advisory note from the engineering and mechanical division of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project, stating that they will open their gates. They asked us to issue an advisory in this regard,” Addl Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Varunjeet Singh Charak told ANI.
He added, “We have issued an advisory to the general public not to go near the tributaries or the riverbank, as it could be dangerous.”

The Additional District Magistrate of Ramban has issued an advisory directing all relevant Revenue, Police, SDRF, and Rural Development Department officers to coordinate closely and jointly monitor the situation along the Chenab River banks.

To prevent accidents, local authorities–including Lamberdars, Chowkidars, GRS, and VLWs–have been instructed to advise residents to avoid movement near the riverbanks, including people, livestock, rafts, and vehicles.

NHPC officials reported that persistent heavy rainfall has raised water levels in the Chenab River. As a precautionary measure, all spillways of the Baglihar Dam have been opened to release excess water.

The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar issued a fresh weather advisory on Thursday, warning residents of Jammu and Kashmir about potential flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas over the coming days.

According to the forecast, from August 1 to 3, the weather is predicted to remain mostly hot and humid, with isolated rain or thundershower activity in a few places. Between August 4 and 6, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely across many areas of Jammu and Kashmir, with the possibility of heavy downpours in certain locations of Jammu Division, particularly during late night and early morning hours.

New UPI rules come into effect: What you need to know

New UPI rules come into effect: What you need to know

Srinagar, August 1: New UPI rules are set to come into effect on Friday, August 1. Introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), these guidelines aim to improve the efficiency of UPI platforms and strengthen safeguards against fraud. The rules will be applicable across all payment service providers, including Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.

Each UPI app will allow users to check their bank balance 50 times a day. UPI apps will also be able to limit or stop balance enquiry requests to reduce the load on UPI during peak hours. From August, users will be able to see the available balance in their account with every transaction.

Auto payments enable banks to automatically debit a fixed amount from users’ accounts on a recurring basis. However, processing these payments during peak hours can strain the Application Programming Interface (API) systems. To address this, the NPCI has directed that such transactions be carried out only during non-peak hours — specifically before 10 am, between 1 pm to 5 pm, and after 9:30 pm. This means an autopayment scheduled for, say, 11 am, may be processed either earlier or later than the set time. Additionally, if a transaction fails, the system will attempt retries. If all retries fail, the auto payment will be cancelled.

Customers will be able to see the list of banks linked to their mobile number. They can only check the bank’s details 25 times per day. With this, the customers will only be able to see their bank details at certain times, and the requests are to be initiated by the customers after selecting the issuer’s bank in the UPI app.

During peak hours, it’s common for users to face issues where money is debited from the sender’s account but not received by the recipient. Starting August, such unconfirmed transactions will be updated within seconds, reducing the instances of “pending” status. Users will also be allowed to check the payment status only three times, with a mandatory 90-second gap between each attempt.
