Amarnath Yatra 2025: Number of pilgrims likely to cross four lakh mark

Srinagar, July 30: With over 3.93 lakh devotees having ‘darshan’ so far during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, the figure is likely to cross four lakh within the next two days.

On Wednesday, another batch of 1,339 Yatris left for the Valley from Jammu. The first escorted convoy of 16 vehicles carrying 328 Yatris left at 3.28 a.m. for Baltal base camp, while the second escorted convoy of 42 vehicles carrying 1,017 Yatris left at 3.48 a.m. for Pahalgam base camp.

In addition to this, many devotees are arriving directly for the Yatra, who avail of on-the-spot registration to undertake the journey to the two base camps.

Registration is available at both the base camps for those arriving directly. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), which manages the affairs of the Yatra, has been facilitating the pilgrims to undertake the pilgrimage without facing hardships.

On the Nag Panchami occasion on Tuesday, ‘Chhari Pujan’ was performed at the Amareshwar Temple inside the Dashnami Akhara Building in Srinagar. The prayer was led by the sole custodian of Lord Shiva’s holy mace (Chhari Mubarak), Mahant Swami Deependra Giri, accompanied by Sadhus from across the country. It is the journey of the Chhari Mubarak that determines the landmarks of the Amarnath Yatra. It will start its final journey towards the cave shrine from the Amareshwar temple in Srinagar on August 4 and will reach the holy cave shrine on August 9, marking the official conclusion of the Yatra.

The Yatra involves high altitude trek in the Himalayas as the cave shrine is situated 3888 metres above sea level.

The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

The Yatra this year is being held under tight security watch following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Due to security reasons, no helicopter services are available to the Yatris this year. A heavy ring of multi-tier security comprising the Army, the BSF, SSB, CRPF and the J&K Police has been deployed to secure the Yatra.

The Army has deployed 8,000 specially trained commandos to augment the existing number of security men deployed on Yatra duties.

TRF published photo of Pahalgam attack site, twice claimed responsibility: UNSC sanctions monitoring report

Tourist footfall dipped in J&K post Pahalgam attack, no economic assessment impact done yet: Centre

United Nations, July 30: The Resistance Front (TRF) had twice claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack and “published a photograph of the attack site”, the UN Security Council’s sanctions monitoring team has said.

The team in a report also cited assertions that the attack could not have happened without the support of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT).

The 36th report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaeda and associated individuals and entities, released here on Tuesday, mentions the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed, saying “five terrorists attacked a tourist spot in Pahalgam, in Jammu and Kashmir”.

“The attack was claimed that same day by The Resistance Front (TRF), who in parallel published a photograph of the attack site,” said the report, which was submitted to the 1267 ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaeda sanctions committee of the UN Security Council.

The report said that the “claim of responsibility” by TRF was “repeated the following day. On 26 April, however, TRF retracted its claim. There was no further communication from TRF, and no other group claimed responsibility,” it said.

The report cited a member state which said that “the attack could not have happened without Lashkar-e-Taiba support, and that there was a relationship between LeT and TRF. Another member state said that the attack was carried out by TRF, which was synonymous with LeT.”

It also noted that one member state “rejected” these views and said that LeT was “defunct”.

The report added that regional relations remain fragile.

“There is a risk that terrorist groups may exploit these regional tensions.”

This month, the US listed TRF as a designated Foreign Terrorist Organisation and Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

Following the Pahalgam attack, the 15-nation Security Council had on April 25 issued a press statement, underlining the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of the reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.

However, the statement did not mention TRF as the group responsible for the attack after Pakistan managed to get the name removed.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in the Indian Parliament on Monday that when the Security Council was discussing the press statement, Pakistan tried to get any mention of TRF excluded.

India had launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack.

The Sanctions Monitoring Team report further said that ISIL-K continued to represent the most serious threat, both regionally in Central and South Asia and internationally.

With about 2,000 fighters, ISIL-K (The Islamic State – Khorasan Province) continued to recruit both inside and outside Afghanistan, including among Central Asian States and the Russian North Caucasus.

“In North Afghanistan and areas close to the Pakistani borders, ISIL-K indoctrinated children in madrassas, establishing a suicide training course for minors aged approximately 14 years old,” the report said.

It added that ISIL-K tried to establish operations in the countries neighbouring Afghanistan and globally.

“There were reported to be several Al-Qaeda-related training sites across Afghanistan, and three newer sites were identified, although these were likely to be small and rudimentary,” it said, adding that these sites reportedly trained both Al-Qaeda and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) fighters.

The TTP had approximately 6,000 fighters and continued to receive substantial logistical and operational support from the de facto authorities in Afghanistan. Some member states reported that the TTP maintained tactical-level connections with ISIL-K.

The TTP continued to carry out high-profile attacks in the region, some of which incurred mass casualties. It was reported that the TTP had continued access to a range of weapons, enhancing the lethality of attacks.

“One member state reported that, in January 2025, TTP provided training to terrorists in Baluchistan.”

The report said some member states suggested that there was close coordination between the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) (including its Majeed Brigade) and TTP in parts of southern Afghanistan. One member state reported that they shared four training camps (e.g. Walikot, Shorabak), and that Al-Qaida provided ideological and weapons training.

Some BLA attacks showed a high degree of complexity, the report said, citing the March 11 hijack by the BLA of the Jaffar Express train in an isolated mountainous region with improvised explosive devices and other weapons, killing 31, including 21 hostages, “which demonstrated in a high-profile manner the rise in the group’s capacity and brutality.”

There were also concerns that the confidence and ambition of Al-Qaiea in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) were increasing, it said.

Trump shortens ‘deadline’ to 10 days for Russia to end conflict with Ukraine, threatens tariffs

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

Washington, July 30: US President Donald Trump said that his 10-day “deadline” for Moscow to end the conflict with Ukraine is in effect, cutting short the 50-day timeline he announced two weeks ago.

Russia has “10 days from today” to reach a ceasefire agreement, Trump told reporters on his flight back to Washington following his visit to Scotland. Otherwise, “We’re going to put on tariffs and stuff,” he added.

On July 14, Trump threatened Russia with “severe tariffs” unless it agrees to a ceasefire with Ukraine within 50 days.

He shortened the deadline to “10 or 12 days” on Monday during his meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, citing disappointment with “Moscow’s lack of willingness to compromise.”

In response, the Kremlin said it has “taken note of” Trump’s statement, and its special operation in Ukraine continues, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The special military operation continues,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday, noting, “We also remain committed to the peace process to resolve the conflict around Ukraine and to ensuring our interests in the course of this settlement.”

Meanwhile, the conflict in Ukraine continues, with Russian drone and missile strikes hitting the country’s north-eastern Sumy region on Sunday, wounding four people.

Russian officials also claimed to have shot down 150 Ukrainian drones, with one person killed and three others injured near St Petersburg.

No CMP between NC, Congress even 8 months after Govt formation: Karra

Karra seeks special session of J&K Assembly to devise strategy for statehood

Rajouri, Jul 29: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee President, Tariq Hamid Karra, on Monday voiced concern over the lack of a Common Minimum Programme (CMP) and coordination mechanism between the National Conference (NC) and Congress, despite the coalition government being eight months into its tenure.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to Rajouri, Karra said, “There is neither a Common Minimum Programme nor a coordination committee in place between Congress and NC, even after eight months in office. Such frameworks are vital for the smooth functioning of a coalition government.”

Responding to questions over the exclusion of NC leaders from the Congress-led ‘Delhi Chalo Abhiyan’ to press demand for restoration of statehood, Karra said such decisions are generally made only after a formal understanding between coalition partners. “In the absence of a CMP or coordination committee, no such decisions can be expected to be mutually taken,” he added. Reiterating the Congress party’s demand for the complete restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, Karra emphasized that anything short of full statehood is unacceptable. “The restoration should be unconditional. We have inputs that the Centre may retain certain departments like Home, which defeats the purpose of true statehood,” he said. Karra also commented on the recent initiative by the Lieutenant Governor’s administration to extend relief to families of terror victims, including distribution of appointment letters to unemployed youth. While welcoming the move, he questioned its timing.

Er Rashid calls for dialogue on Kashmir

Er Rashid calls for dialogue on Kashmir

New Delhi, Jul 29: In an address during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, Baramulla MP and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) chief Engineer Abdul Rashid on Tuesday condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, terming it “the murder of entire humanity” and called upon both the ruling NDA and the opposition to open their hearts and talk about the pain of Kashmiris.

As per KNT, speaking on custody parole granted by a Delhi court until August 4, Rashid began his speech with a poetic invocation before delving into a deeply emotional appeal for empathy and justice. “As per Islamic belief, one who kills an innocent human is like killing all of humanity. What happened in Pahalgam was exactly that, murder of entire humanity,” he said, drawing attention from across party lines.”

Referring to the pain endured by victims’ families, Rashid said Kashmiris perhaps understood their grief better than anyone else, having themselves lost over 80,000 lives since the onset of armed conflict in the late 1980s. “We have been shouldering coffins for decades; we are tired of graveyards,” he added.

The AIP leader, currently in judicial custody in a militant funding case, was allowed to attend Parliament on parole but was denied interim bail. “Talk not for the government’s sake or for scoring political points, but talk for the people of Kashmir,” he urged.

His remarks were met with a mix of silence and nods across the house as Kashmir’s tragedy was laid bare in a moment of rare poignancy.

TCS market valuation erodes by Rs 28,149 cr since layoff announcement

New Delhi, Jul 29: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has lost Rs 28,148.72 crore from its market valuation in two days after the company announced that it will lay off about 12,000 employees of its global workforce this year.

On Tuesday, the bellwether stock declined 0.73 per cent to settle at Rs 3,056.55 apiece at the BSE. During the day, it dropped 1.23 per cent to Rs 3,041.

On the NSE, it dipped 0.72 per cent to Rs 3,057. Shares of TCS had declined nearly 2 per cent on Monday. The stock has lost 2.48 per cent in two trading days. The market capitalisation (mcap) of TCS eroded by Rs 28,148.72 crore to Rs 11,05,886.54 crore in two days.

India’s largest IT services firm TCS is set to lay off about 2 per cent, or 12,261 employees, of its global workforce this year, with the majority of those impacted belonging to middle and senior grades. As of June 30, 2025, the TCS workforce stood at 6,13,069. It increased its workforce by 5,000 in the recently concluded June quarter. The move is part of the company’s broader strategy to become a “future-ready organisation”, focusing on investments in technology, AI deployment, market expansion, and workforce realignment, TCS said in a statement.

“Towards this, a number of reskilling and redeployment initiatives have been underway. As part of this journey, we will also be releasing associates from the organisation whose deployment may not be feasible. This will impact about 2 per cent of our global workforce, primarily in the middle and the senior grades, over the course of the year,” it said.
