Amarnath Yatra crosses mark of 3.77 Lakh pilgrims in 25 days

Amarnath Yatra: Over 3,500 pilgrims leave Jammu base camp

Srinagar, July 28: Over 3.77 lakh people performed the ongoing Amarnath Yatra since it started this year on July 3 as another batch of 1,635 devotees left Jammu for the Valley on Monday.

Officials of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) said the ‘Chhari Sthapana’ ceremony was held at the Shri Amareshwar Temple inside the Dashnami Akhara Building in Srinagar yesterday.

Officials said the ‘Chhari Pujan’ will be celebrated on August 29 on ‘Nag Pachami’ at the same temple in Srinagar while the final journey of the Chhari Mubarak will start on August 4 towards the holy cave shrine.

“A fresh batch of 1,635 pilgrims left Jammu in two escorted convoys today. First convoy of 17 vehicles carrying 374 Yatris left at 3.25 A.M. for the Baltal base camp while the second convoy of 42 vehicles carrying 1,261 Yatris left at 4 A.M. for the Pahalgam base camp”, officials said.

Lord Shiva’s holy mace, the ‘Chhari Mubarak’, is traditionally housed inside the Amareshwar Temple at the Dashnami Akhara Building in the Budshah Chowk area of Srinagar city.

It is the journey of the Chhari Mubarak that determines the landmarks of the Amarnath Yatra.

It will start its final journey towards the cave shrine from the Amareshwar temple in Srinagar on August 4 and will reach the holy cave shrine on August 9, marking the official conclusion of the Yatra.

During its journey from its seat to the holy cave shrine, traditional Puja will be held en route at Pampore, Bijbehara, Mattan and Pahalgam before the Chhari Mubarak arrives at its final destination, the holy cave shrine.

Authorities have made extensive multi-tier security arrangements for this year’s Amarnath Yatra, as this takes place after the cowardly attack of April 22 in which Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 civilians after segregating them based on faith in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam.

An additional 180 companies of CAPFs have been brought in to augment the existing strength of the Army, BSF, CRPF, SSB and the local police.

The Army has deployed over 8,000 special commandos to secure the passage of the pilgrims this year.

The Yatra started on July 3 and will end after 38 days on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.

Yatris approach the holy cave shrine situated 3888 metres above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas either from the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route.

Those using the Pahalgam route pass through Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni to reach the cave shrine, covering a distance of 46 km on foot.

This trek takes a pilgrim four days to get to the cave shrine. And, those using the shorter Baltal route have to trek 14 km to reach the cave shrine and return to the base camp the same day after having darshan.

No helicopter services are available to Yatris this year due to security reasons.

The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe that the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

Lok Sabha to hold special discussion on 'Operation Sindoor' today

New Delhi, July 28: Lok Sabha is set to hold a special discussion on ‘Operation Sindoor’, India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack on Monday.

A fiery debate on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor is expected to unfold in Parliament, between top leaders from the ruling alliance and the Opposition.

Lok Sabha List of Business for Monday states, “Special Discussion on India’s strong, successful and decisive ‘Operation Sindoor’ in response to terrorist attack in Pahalgam”.

Twenty-six civilians were killed in the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, after which India retaliated through precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

Meanwhile, the first week of the Monsoon session of Parliament witnessed major disruptions with the surprise resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice President.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to initiate the discussion on Operation Sindhoor in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Sources said that Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and BJP MPs Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey are also expected to take part in the discussion in Lok Sabha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to intervene in the discussion in the Lok Sabha. He may also intervene in the discussion in the Rajya Sabha.

Sources said discussion on Operation Sindoor will begin in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Rajnath Singh and S Jaishankar will be among ministers who will take part in the discussion in the Rajya Sabha, sources said.

TDP’s Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi are expected to participate in the discussion on Op Sindoor in the Lok Sabha. The sources said the party has been allotted 30 minutes. From the Samajwadi Party, its chief Akhilesh Yadav, and MP Rajiv Rai will participate in the debate.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the debate on Operation Sindoor will be held for 16 hours in the Lok Sabha on July 28 and for 16 hours in the Rajya Sabha on July 29.

“All issues cannot be discussed together… The opposition has raised several issues, like the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar and others. We have told them that Operation Sindoor will be discussed first. We will decide which issues to discuss after that. Operation Sindoor will be debated for 16 hours in the Lok Sabha on Monday (July 28) and for 16 hours in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (July 29),” Rijiju told reporters.

Opposition parties have been demanding a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor and have sought the government’s clarification over US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

The Opposition parties had been demanding PM Modi’s presence during the debate. Since PM Modi travelled abroad on a two-nation visit this week, the discussion has been scheduled for next week.

Apart from this, the floor leaders of the INDIA bloc parties will meet on Monday at 10 am to discuss the strategy for the second week of the monsoon session, with the Lok Sabha slated to take up discussion on Operation Sindoor on Monday and the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

Yemen's Houthis say to target 'all foreign ships' linked to Israel

Sanaa, July 28: Yemen’s Houthi armed group said in a statement that it will begin targeting “all foreign ships linked to Israel… regardless of their destination,” citing retaliation for what it called Israel’s “blockade and starvation” campaign against Gaza.

“This escalation includes targeting all ships belonging to any company that deals with Israeli ports, regardless of their nationality and wherever they may be, within our forces’ reach,” Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said in the statement aired by Houthi-run al-Masirah TV.

“We warn all companies to cease their dealings with Israeli ports, starting the hour this statement is issued,” he said, calling on all countries to pressure Israel to halt its aggression and lift the blockade on the Gaza Strip “if they wish to avoid this escalation.”

Earlier this month, the Houthis claimed responsibility for sinking two commercial vessels — Magic Seas and Eternity C — in the Red Sea. In 2024 alone, the group has attacked and sunk four ships. In 2023, it seized the Galaxy Leader and detained its crew, who were later released through Omani mediation, though the ship remains in Houthi custody, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Houthi group, which controls much of northern Yemen, has been targeting Israel and Israeli-linked vessels in the Red Sea since November 2023 to show solidarity with Palestinians, as acts of solidarity with Palestinians and an effort to pressure Israel to end its military operations in Gaza.

Two dead, 32 injured in temple stampede in UP's Barabanki

Barabanki, July 28: Two people were killed and 32 injured in a stampede at a temple here after a live electric wire, broken by monkeys, fell onto a tin shed early on Monday, officials said.

The incident occurred at the Avsaaneshwar temple in the Haidergarh area during the holy month of Shravan on Monday when devotees had gathered at the temple for ‘jalabhishek’ (offering water as a ritual). The electric current spread through the tin shed as the wire fell, triggering panic and a stampede in the temple premises.

Prashant (22) from the Mubarakpura village under the Lonikatra police station area and another 30-year-old devotee succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the Trivediganj Community Health Centre (CHC), officials said.

A total of 10 injured persons were brought to Trivediganj CHC, of whom five were referred to higher medical centres due to their critical condition.

Meanwhile, 26 injured devotees are being treated at the Haidergarh CHC, and one of them has been referred for advanced care due to serious injuries.

Following the incident, there was chaos in the temple and surrounding areas. District and police officials reached the spot and are working to manage the situation. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Barabanki District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi said that during the ‘jalabhishek’ ritual, monkeys had damaged an electric wire, which caused current to flow through three tin sheds in the temple complex.

The resulting panic led to a stampede in which two people lost their lives and more than two dozens were injured, he added.

Devotees later resumed their worship at the temple.

Decade on, Zurimanz hospital in Bandipora awaits completion

Decade on, Zurimanz hospital in Bandipora awaits completion

Bandipora, Jul 27: Nine years have passed, yet residents of Zurimanz village, located along Wular Lake in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, are still waiting for the completion of a New Type Primary Health Centre (NTPHC).

The village which falls under Aloosa Tehsil in Bandipora division, is home to a predominantly fishing community, dependent on Lakes produce.

Residents have largely given up hope as construction continues to stall. The delays have been blamed on funding shortages and a lack of commitment from contractors.

Construction of the NTPHC began in 2016 after the demolition of a single-storey, dilapidated building that had served as a health sub-centre.

The community was promised improved healthcare facilities, medical staff, and equipment, but villagers still silently watch in despair.

“Our wait doesn’t seem to end any time soon,” said Ghulam Nabi Lone, a local resident and also a fisherman while speaking to Greater Kashmir.

It has taken the executing agency almost eight years to raise the three-storey concrete structure.

Work has progressed intermittently, prompting residents to repeatedly approach the Deputy Commissioner’s office for intervention. Each time, locals shared, they returned with little progress made.

“The construction has been erratic and has witnessed long pauses. Sometimes we’re told it’s a funding issue. Other times, we hear the administration, the R&B Department and the contractor are not on the same page,” said Aqib Dar, another resident.

In 2024, some internal work was carried out on the ground and first floors. However, the majority of interior work remains incomplete.

“Most recently, work has been halted for the last 11 months,” Lone added. In the meantime, the NTPHC continues to operate from a single rundown room with no beds or basic facilities.

“We’re forced to travel to nearby villages for treatment. With the road often submerged under lake water during the summer months, it becomes very difficult to move critically ill patients,” said Farooq Ahmad, another villager.

Officials acknowledged there are ongoing funding challenges but also pointed fingers at the contractor for abandoning the project last year despite the release of funds.

Speaking to Greater Kashmir, the Chief Medical Officer of Bandipora, Ishtiyaq Naik said the project had been allocated Rs 56 lakh last year. “But it all got lapsed as the contractor did not agree to continue the work,” he said.

Insiders have revealed that this year Rs 56 lakh was sanctioned for all ongoing healthcare projects in the district raising questions if any of the on going projects would be completed as Bandipora district in a whole has many such structures which are under construction process, mostly falling in Sumbal division.

The officer confirmed that while most health projects in Bandipora division have been “completed”, the Zurimanz facility remains an exception.

He added that the internal works in two storeys were “nearly complete” and that he had summoned the contractor to determine whether he was willing to resume work.

He expressed hope that a portion of funds was in discussion to be released in favor of the project to allow it to move forward but sounded sceptical if the contractor would be motivated.

Amit Shah calls for data-driven defence mindset Pushes youth-led strategy at NSSC

Shah orders chiefs of paramilitary forces to call back their personnel who are on leave: Sources

New Delhi, Jul 27: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah Sunday called for a data-driven defence mindset and pushed for a youth-led strategy.

Addressing the 8th National Security Strategies Conference (NSSC) in New Delhi, Shah paid homage to the soldiers who lost their lives during the Kargil War and saluted the efforts of the armed forces and BSF during ‘Operation Sindoor’.

He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong resolve and the support of fellow citizens sent a strong message of zero tolerance to terrorism across the world.

Pointing out that India’s economy had risen to the fourth position globally, Shah said that India was now a world leader in new and emerging technologies, start-ups, green energy, and innovations.

He said that India’s rising stature would lead to increasing national security challenges in the years to come.

Stressing that these challenges needed to be tackled through better coordination, Shah directed the formation of homogeneous teams of central and state agencies to develop strategies and implement and monitor them.

He also instructed the involvement of young Police officers in each state to brainstorm on national challenges and devise solutions to address them.

Shah said that this conference was significant in enabling senior officers to guide young officers, familiarise them with challenges, and show them the path to finding solutions.

He urged that the use of national databases like NATGRID, NIDAAN, iMoT, and CBI’s fugitive database be inculcated amongst young officers by including them in all training programmes.

“To address the challenges coming before the nation, a reliable ecosystem for real-time data sharing must be established,” Shah said.

He said that the PM Modi-led government had resolved numerous issues scattered across various states.

Shah emphasised that the next 5 to 10 years would be very important for the development and security of the country.

Observing that internal security challenges would remain dynamic given India’s geo-political neighbourhood, he exhorted the state Police forces and central security agencies to adopt the motto of ‘Security, Alertness and Coordination’.

Appreciating the achievements in the Left Wing Extremism areas, North East, and J&K, Shah asked Director Generals of Police (DGPs) to adopt a similar approach for effective implementation of the three new criminal laws and tackling the challenge of narcotics.

He advocated the need for a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approach in initiating action against big drug cartels, besides focusing on the extradition of narco-offenders.

Shah directed the DGPs to make it the prime agenda of the Police for the next three years on the path towards a drug-free India.

Pointing out that police stations were focal points of intelligence collection, he called upon the Police leadership to evolve a credible platform for sharing real-time information up to the police station level.

Emphasising the primary duty of the Police to protect the life, property and dignity of citizens, the Union Home Minister directed each state Police force and central agency to strive towards excellence, and nurture a spirit of healthy competition to address internal security challenges.

Stressing the need for all-round development in LWE-affected areas, he urged the DGPs to coordinate with state administrations to ensure the implementation of more than 300 central and state development schemes at the grassroots level.

Underscoring the importance of securing smaller seaports along our maritime borders, Shah emphasised capacity building of state Police to counter infiltration and smuggling activities.

He also reviewed the counterterror initiatives and directed that stringent legal action be taken against repeat offenders.

APEDA rejects allegations on organic cotton certification

APEDA rejects allegations on organic cotton certification

New Delhi, July 27: The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has strongly rejected the allegations made by an opposition leader regarding irregularities in organic cotton certification under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), a Ministry of Commerce and Industry statement said on Sunday.

In the statement, the APEDA clarified that the claims made during a recent press briefing were “unfounded, unsubstantiated and misleading”, and only serve to weaken the credibility of India’s robust regulatory system.

The NPOP, launched in 2001 by the Department of Commerce, is India’s official organic certification programme for exports.

It is implemented by the APEDA and follows a strict third-party certification process. The system has been recognised as equivalent to the standards of the European Union, Switzerland, and accepted by the UK, with a mutual recognition arrangement in place with Taiwan as well.

Addressing the allegations that organic cotton production is concentrated only in Madhya Pradesh and involves a limited number of farmer groups, the APEDA said this is entirely incorrect.

As of July 19, the NPOP covers 4,712 active organic grower groups across 31 states and Union Territories — representing nearly 19.3 lakh certified farmers producing a variety of crops including cereals, pulses, oilseeds, tea, coffee, spices, and cotton.

The APEDA also clarified that cotton is covered under NPOP only till the production stage.

Post-production processes like ginning and processing are handled under separate private certifications, not under NPOP.

The claims that farmers receive Rs 50,000 per hectare as a subsidy under NPOP were also dismissed by the APEDA, stating that neither the Department of Commerce nor the APEDA provides any such financial support under the programme.

To ensure credibility, the NPOP has a multi-layered system of checks. Certification Bodies, both government and private, carry out annual audits and inspections of farms.

These are further monitored by the National Accreditation Body (NAB) through unannounced audits coordinated by the APEDA.
