Inter-state, trans-national module of terrorists busted; explosive material, arms recovered

Srinagar, Nov 12: The arrest of two overground workers (OGWs) carrying posters of terror outfits Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwatul Hind (AGuH) led to the busting of an interstate and trans-national module of terrorists, resulting in a major haul of arms and 2900 kilograms of explosive material, officials said on Wednesday.

The Srinagar police apprehended the OGWs on November 2, and a swift investigation by the local police led to the unravelling of the plot in less than three days.

Inspector Mir Masrat Aalam, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Nowgam police station, discovered during questioning that the suspects were part of a larger network and their handler – Moulvi Irfan Ahmad – hailed from Shopian district but was operating under the garb of a prayer leader in a local mosque in Nowgam area, officials in the know of the investigation said.

The officials further said that the team from the Nowgam police station picked up the imam who revealed the involvement of several young doctors in the module, currently working outside Jammu and Kashmir.

“The SHO informed his seniors about the disclosures, who sent a team to Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, where the cops from Jammu and Kashmir, with the help of local police, managed to nab Dr Adeel Ahmad Rather from a private hospital,” the officials said.

Officials added that Dr Rather was arrested on November 6 and was brought to Srinagar the next day on a transit remand. Through his interrogation, police recovered an AK rifle from a locker at the medical college where he had worked until October of the previous year.

The doctor revealed information about large quantities of explosives stored by other members of the module in Faridabad and other locations. Consequently, police arrested Dr Muzamil Ahmad Ganaie, who had returned to his native village in Pulwama district to attend his sister’s wedding. At his direction, a substantial cache of explosives was recovered from his rented room in Faridabad, officials said.

Ganaie was working at a local hospital in Faridabad, where Umar Nabi, a key suspect in the Delhi blast case, also worked.

The SHO’s crucial role in exposing the module led to his reassignment to the NCR to assist with investigations into the explosives seizure and the Delhi blast, officials noted.

Meanwhile, investigations in Kashmir have intensified, targeting individuals believed to be connected with the terror ecosystem. Dozens of people, including several doctors with close links to Rather, Ganaie, or Nabi, have been questioned by the police.

The police also questioned Fatima Bano, the wife of Moulvi Irfan, officials informed.

While some of those questioned are suspected of being involved in terror activities, others are being examined to understand the recruitment processes employed by terrorist handlers operating within the union territory or across the Line of Control, officials said.

NIA, J&K Police arrest 15, detain 3 and question 56 doctors

New Delhi, Nov 12: In the aftermath of the tragic car blast on November 10 near the Red Fort in the national capital, fifteen persons have been arrested, three individuals detained and a total of 56 doctors questioned so far in connection with the incident and the ongoing probe into the “Doctor Module” terror link, media reports said.

Investigators suspect that a modified explosive may have been used in the blast as Hospital sources cleared that no explosives were found on the bodies of the deceased.

The investigation traces back to an objectionable poster containing threats to security forces that appeared in the Nowgam Police Station area of Srinagar. A case was registered on October 19. The initial phase of the investigation led to the arrests of Maulvi Irfan Ahmed Wagh from Shopian and Zamir Ahmed from Wakura, Ganderbal, between October 20 and 27.

The investigation further widened with the apprehension of Doctor Adil from Saharanpur on November 5, followed by seizures of an AK-47 rifle and other ammunition from Anantnag Hospital on November 7, and more rifles, pistols, and ammunition from Al Falah University, Faridabad, on November 8.

Subsequent interrogations revealed additional members of the module, resulting in the arrest of Doctor Muzammil and the seizure of a significant cache of weapons and ammunition. On November 9, a person named Madrasi, a resident of Dhoj, Faridabad, was arrested.

A major breakthrough came on November 10 with the seizure of 2,563 kg of explosives from the residence of Hafiz Mohammad Ishtiyaq, an Imam at Al Falah Masjid, Dhera Colony, Faridabad.
Additional raids recovered 358 kg of explosive material, detonators, and timers, bringing the total to around 3,000 kg. As per police sources, “During these operations, Doctor Umar Mohammad, an Al Falah University employee and alleged module member, went underground.”

On the evening of November 10, the Red Fort explosion occurred. Delhi Police, along with the NSG, NIA, and forensic teams, immediately responded. The injured were hospitalised, and DNA samples, explosive residues, and other evidence were collected from the site. A significant discovery was an amputated hand, suspected to belong to Dr. Umar Mohammad, who is alleged to have been the suicide bomber. DNA samples from his mother are being tested for confirmation.
Investigations indicate that Umar was radicalising students at Al Falah University, which served as the module’s operational hub. His neighbor and colleague, Dr. Muzamil Shakil, has been arrested.

The car used in the blast was registered to Dr. Shaheen Shahid, later arrested from Lucknow and identified as the woman commanding Jaish-e-Mohammad operations in India. She reportedly confessed to stockpiling explosives for nearly two years and conspiring with associate doctors to carry out a major terrorist attack.

Police sources said, “CCTV footage suggests that Dr. Umar Mohammad was driving the vehicle, and the explosives used in the blast match those seized in Faridabad.”

Authorities are still investigating whether the explosion was pre-planned or an accidental detonation triggered by Umar’s panic while fleeing.

Investigations also revealed that the vehicle was parked at Al-Falah Medical College, Dhauj, Faridabad, for nearly 11 days, from October 29 until it was driven to Delhi on November 10. The case was formally handed over to the NIA on November 11 to probe the module’s financing, operational hierarchy, and broader networks. (Agencies)

Crackdown against Jamaat-e-Islami cadres in Kashmir

Crackdown against Jamaat-e-Islami cadres in Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 12: Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security forces said on Wednesday that massive crackdowns have been carried out against the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) cadres in the Valley in the aftermath of the Delhi terror blast in which eight people were killed and many others injured.

The intelligence agencies attribute the Delhi blast to the panic of Dr Mohd Umar driving the i20 car rather than a suicidal attack.

But the fact that Dr Umar was on the run after his colleagues involved in white collar terrorism were arrested indicates that the module intended to carry out a major terrorist strike.

Police said on Wednesday that in a massive crackdown against the banned JeI organisation, police in Kulgam district carried out coordinated raids at more than 200 locations across the district.

These searches were conducted at the houses and premises of JeI members and their associates as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle networks supporting terrorism and to neutralise their ground-level influence.

Police said that during the past four days alone, more than 400 Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) have been conducted across different areas of the district, including locations previously associated with encounters, militant hideouts, and Over Ground Workers (OGWs).

In another major coordinated operation, Sopore Police carried out a series of search operations across multiple locations in the district of Sopore, targeting individuals and premises linked to the JeI, which had been banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Police said in the district-wide counter terror and separatist ecosystem action, simultaneous raids were conducted at over 25 locations across Sopore, Zaingeer, and Rafiabad areas with the assistance of other security forces.

The searches were based on credible intelligence inputs indicating attempts by JeI-linked elements to revive their activities under different fronts.

“During the operations, a significant quantity of incriminating material, including documents, digital gadgets, and printed content with links to the banned organisation, was recovered and seized for detailed scrutiny. Several individuals are being questioned to ascertain their involvement in unlawful activities,” police said.

Police in Anantnag district said that around 500 individuals with links to banned organisations, including JeI and relatives of JKNOPs (J&K natives operating from Pakistan), have been interrogated so far. Many of them have reportedly been bound down and shifted to the District Jail Mattan in Anantnag under preventive detention laws.

During the raids, police seized incriminating documents, digital devices, and other materials of evidentiary value. Several JeI members were also questioned to trace wider networks allegedly aiding terrorists.

In the Shopian district, police carried out searches at multiple locations, targeting the residences of JeI activists. Police said the houses of Dr Hameed Fayaz at Naidgam and Mohammad Yousuf Falahie at Chitragam, among others, were searched during the operation.

The searches were conducted as part of ongoing investigations in the area.

2 cartridges, explosives among over 40 samples collected from site

New Delhi, Nov 12: Two cartridges, including a live ammunition, and samples of two different types of explosives are among more than 40 samples that have been collected by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team from the blast site near the Red Fort, officials said on Wednesday.

Preliminary analysis suggests that one of the explosive samples appears to be ammonium nitrate, they said.

On Monday, 360 kg of ammonium nitrate was recovered from Faridabad during an investigation in Faridabad when Dr Muzammil Ganaie and Dr Shaheen Sayeed, both connected to the Al Falah university were arrested.

“The second explosive sample is believed to be more powerful than ammonium nitrate. Its exact composition will be confirmed after detailed forensic examination,” an official said.

According to the officials, the FSL team found the cartridges while inspecting the spot.

More than 40 samples have been collected till now.

A high-intensity explosion ripped through a slow moving vehicle near Red Fort traffic signal on Monday, claiming 12 lives.

Further investigation is underway to determine the nature of the explosives and how they were used in the blast, the officials added.

The FSL has constituted a special team to analyse the samples. The team has been directed to expedite the examination and submit the report without delay, officials said.

The lab has been functional round the clock since the blast.

New Delhi, Nov 12: The Delhi Police has been put on high alert and massive checking drives are being carried out across the national capital following the powerful explosion near the Red Fort metro station that left 12 people dead and many injured, officials said on Wednesday.

Police personnel, along with paramilitary forces, are deployed in large numbers at all the entry and exit points of Delhi. Vehicles entering and leaving the city are being thoroughly checked as part of the intensified security measures, they said.

Senior police officers are personally supervising the security checks at interstate borders, including Ghazipur, Singhu, Tikri, and Badarpur.

Vehicles are being checked randomly at markets, metro stations, railway terminals and bus stands to ensure that no suspicious movement goes unnoticed.
