US has to bring in talent from around world: Trump

New York, Nov 12: In what is seen as a U-turn, US President Donald Trump appeared to defend the H-1B visa programme to bring talent from across the world, saying a foreign investor cannot pull people off an unemployment line, who haven’t worked in five years, and start making missiles.

“I agree but you also do have to bring in talent,” Trump said, responding to a question in an interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox News on whether the H-1B visa issue will not be a big priority for his administration and if one wants to raise wages for American workers as the country cannot be flooded with hundreds of thousands of foreign workers.

When Ingraham noted that “we have plenty of talent”, Trump said, “No, you don’t, no, you don’t. You don’t have certain talents. And people have to learn.”

Srinagar-Jammu NH to remain open for 2-way traffic

Srinagar-Jammu NH to remain open for 2-way traffic

Ramban, Nov 12: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open for two-way movement of Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and heavy vehicles on Wednesday.

Traffic authorities said that the highway would remain open on Thursday as well, allowing two-way movement of vehicles from both Srinagar and Jammu.

However, they said vehicular movement remained slow at several single-lane stretches, including Balli Nullah, Dewal, Nashri-Dalwass, Maroog, and Kishtwari Pattar, due to the breakdown of a few heavy vehicles along the route.

A fresh advisory issued by the Traffic Department for Wednesday said that, subject to fair weather and good road conditions, LMVs and heavy vehicles would be allowed to ply from both directions on the highway.

Commuters and operators of LMVs have been advised to undertake their journey during daylight hours in view of the ongoing seasonal migration of nomadic families from Kashmir towards Jammu. Authorities urged drivers to maintain lane discipline and avoid overtaking or wrong-lane driving to prevent unnecessary traffic congestion.

400-year-old Mughal-era Masjid in Pulwama set for restoration after decades of neglect

400-year-old Mughal-era Masjid in Pulwama set for restoration after decades of neglect

Pulwama, Nov 12: Hidden amid apple orchards and narrow lanes of Shadimarg village, about 10 kilometres from Pulwama town, stands a 400-year-old Mughal-era Masjid, a relic of Kashmir’s architectural heritage now struggling to survive after decades of neglect.

Built of deodar wood, stone and mud, the Masjid is believed to have been constructed during the reign of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, when Pulwama served as a resting point for imperial caravans moving between Srinagar and Shopian. The adjoining Mughal sarai (travellers’ inn) once sheltered merchants and soldiers, but like the Masjid, it too has fallen into ruin.

Over the years, harsh winters, moisture seepage and lack of upkeep have taken a severe toll. The once-solid walls are now deeply cracked, wooden beams have decayed, and portions of the roof have caved in, forcing villagers to stop offering regular prayers there for safety reasons.

“Our elders say the Masjid was a place of learning and prayer for travellers during Mughal times,” said Khurshid Ahmad Mir, a resident. “We tried to repair parts of the roof with our own funds several times, but it was only a temporary solution. The structure needed proper restoration.”

After years of local representations to the administration, the government has sanctioned Rs 22 lakh for its restoration. Officials said tendering has been completed and work will begin shortly under the supervision of the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, in coordination with the local Auqaf Committee.

“Tendering has been done, and the restoration work will start soon,” said Ghulam Mohidin Mir, MLA Rajpora, who played a key role in pursuing the case. “Both the Masjid and the adjoining sarai will be restored to preserve their historical and cultural significance.”

The restoration aims to retain the original Mughal architectural elements — including carved wooden beams, arched windows, and the central mihrab — while strengthening the structure with locally sourced timber and lime plaster.

For the villagers, the move comes as a huge relief and a matter of pride. “It’s more than just a place of worship. It connects us to our roots and to centuries of our history,” said Javed Ahmad, pointing to the fading motifs on the Masjid’s façade. “We hope this effort will revive the identity of Shadimarg as a heritage village.”

Locals say once restored, the Masjid could attract heritage tourists and scholars, offering Pulwama a place on Kashmir’s cultural map beyond its orchards and saffron fields.

“The Masjid has witnessed empires rise and fall,” said an elderly villager. “It deserves to stand for another 400 years — this time with care.”

Kashmiri entrepreneur redefines food waste, wins TiE U Bangalore 2025

Srinagar, Nov 12: Hanan Majid, 26, is building one of India’s most promising sustainability startups – transforming unsold meals into affordable dining options through his venture, Aasta.

Born and raised in Srinagar, Kashmir, Hanan has emerged as a promising young entrepreneur in India’s startup ecosystem after Aasta won the TiE U Bangalore 2025 Pitch Competition, one of the country’s most prestigious student entrepreneurship events.

He is joined by Saiyam Kumar and Muhammad Kaif Alam from the PW Institute of Innovation, who serve as Aasta’s co-founders.

The competition saw over 70 applications from universities across the country, of which 20 promising ventures were shortlisted for an intensive programme featuring workshops, mentorship, and mock pitches.

These finalists advanced through multiple rounds, gaining hands-on guidance, investor exposure, and real-world entrepreneurial experience.

Emerging victorious, Aasta will now represent TiE Bangalore at the TiE U Global Finals, competing against the best student startups from 40 TiE chapters worldwide for international recognition and potential funding support. The winners were evaluated on several criteria, including opportunity assessment, value proposition, business viability, management credibility, financial acumen, and presentation skills.

A former student of Tyndale Biscoe School, Hanan’s journey is rooted in perseverance and purpose. At 15, he earned a full scholarship to attend an international boarding school in the United States, followed by another full scholarship to complete his degree in Industrial Psychology from an American University.

After several years abroad, Hanan felt a strong urge to return to India and contribute to its thriving startup ecosystem. “India has incredible potential right now,” he says. “The startup culture here is vibrant, and I wanted to solve a problem that impacts millions every day.” That problem was food waste, which led to the creation of Aasta – a platform that connects restaurants and cloud kitchens with consumers to sell unsold but high-quality meals at 50 to 70 percent off. Aasta helps restaurants recover the raw material cost of their unsold food instead of dumping it.

At the same time, it provides quality, affordable meals for people who need them the most. “It’s not charity – it’s smart business with real impact,” says Hanan, explaining Aasta’s mission.

Hanan credits much of his journey to India’s growing support for entrepreneurship. “The Government of India’s active encouragement of startups has truly transformed the landscape,” he says.

“Talented people studying abroad shouldn’t hesitate to come back, there are tremendous opportunities here, and the government is genuinely helping young founders succeed,” Hanan says.

“I believe in the power of supply and demand,” he saus. “India demands affordable food, and restaurants have the supply. We just needed to connect them intelligently. Success isn’t about short-term wins – it’s about building something that lasts. Life’s a marathon, not a sprint.” With national recognition and growing traction, Aasta now aims to expand across major Indian cities, working toward its vision of becoming India’s first large-scale platform that turns food waste into opportunity. From the heart of Srinagar to the innovation hubs of Bengaluru, Hanan’s story is one of vision, grit, and impact – a reminder that Kashmiri talent continues to shine brightly on the national stage.

Security forces recover 6 grenades during joint operation in Kupwara’s Jabri Forest

Kupwara, Nov 12: A joint search operation by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Border Security Force (BSF) led to the recovery of six hand grenades from a forested area in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday.

Officials said the operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of a militant hideout in the Jabri Forest area of Tangdhar sector. During the search, security personnel discovered a cache containing six grenades concealed in the dense forest.

The grenades were destroyed on the spot by bomb disposal experts as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incident.

Security officials said the continued recovery of war-like stores in Kupwara highlights the persistent attempts to disrupt peace in the region. They added that recent successful operations have been the result of close coordination and heightened vigilance among the Army, Police, and BSF.

The area remains under tight surveillance, and further searches are being conducted to rule out the presence of additional caches or hideouts. (KNT)
