Nearly 70,000 perform Amarnath Yatra in 4 days

Nearly 70,000 perform Amarnath Yatra in 4 days

Srinagar, July 07: Nearly 70,000 devotees performed the Amarnath Yatra in the last four days as another batch of 8,605 pilgrims left for the Kashmir Valley on Monday, an official said.

According to officials, nearly 70,000 people have performed the ongoing Shri Amarnath ji Yatra so far since it started on July 3. Of these 21,512 Yatris had ‘Darshan’ inside the holy cave shrine on Sunday.

Officials said that another batch of 8,605 Yatris left Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu for the Kashmir Valley in two escorted convoys on Monday.

“The first escorted convoy is carrying 3,486 pilgrims to north Kashmir Baltal base camp while the second escorted convoy is carrying 5,119 Yatris to south Kashmir Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp,” officials said.

Officials of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) that manages the affairs of the annual pilgrimage said that in addition to the number of Yatris coming to the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu, many Yatris are reporting directly at Baltal and Nunwan (Pahalgam) for on spot registration to join the Yatra.

Two pilgrims have died of natural causes since the Yatra started this year.

Authorities have left no stone unturned in providing a multi-tier cover to this year’s Amarnath Yatra, as this takes place after the cowardly attack of April 22 in which Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 civilians after segregating them on the basis of faith in Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam.

An additional 180 companies of CAPFs have been brought in to augment the existing strength of the army, BSF, CRPF, SSB and the local police.

All the transit camps en route to the two base camps and the entire route from Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu to the cave shrine are secured by the security forces.

Locals have extended complete cooperation to this year’s Amarnath Yatra as they have always done in the past. To send out a powerful signal that Kashmiris were deeply shocked by the Pahalgam terror attack, locals were the first to welcome the first batch of Yatris with garlands and placards as the pilgrims crossed the Navyug Tunnel to enter the Kashmir Valley at Qazigund.

On Sunday, locals served cold drinks and pure drinking water to Yatris returning from Baltal base camp in north Kashmir Ganderbal district. To reciprocate the noble gesture, Yatris, without hesitation, accepted the hospitality of the locals and expressed gratitude for the love shown by Kashmiris for the Yatris.

This year, the Yatra started on July 3 and will end after 38 days on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan festivals.

Yatris approach the holy cave shrine situated 3888 metres above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas either from the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route.

Those using the Pahalgam route have to pass through Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni to reach the cave shrine, covering a distance of 46 km on foot.

This trek takes a pilgrim four days to reach the cave shrine.

Those using the shorter Baltal route have to trek 14 km to reach the cave shrine and return to the base camp the same day after performing the Yatra.

For security reasons, no helicopter services are available to Yatris this year.

The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon.

Devotees believe that the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

Shri Amarnath ji Yatra is one of the holiest religious pilgrimages for the devotees, as legend says Lord Shiva narrated the secrets of eternal life and immortality to Mata Parvati inside this cave.

Two pigeons accidentally happened to be inside the cave when the eternal secrets were being narrated by Lord Shiva.

Traditionally, even to this day, a pair of mountain pigeons flies out of the cave shrine when the annual Yatra begins.

Death toll in Texas flood rises to over 65; rescue operations underway

Houston, July 07: The death toll from the severe flooding across Texas in the US has risen to 69, officials said, adding that rescue operations were underway in several places.

Kerrville County Sheriff Larry Leitha has confirmed that 59 people, including 21 children, have been killed in the county, as other deaths have been reported across the state, the BBC reported.

Leitha added that 11 Camp Mystic campers and one councillor remain unaccounted for.

Meanwhile, in a post on social media, US President Donald Trump said: “These families are enduring an unimaginable tragedy.”

About 20 counties in Texas were affected by the flood.

Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the US Government and the bereaved families.

“Deeply saddened to learn about loss of lives, especially children, in the devastating floods in Texas. Our condolences to the US Government and the bereaved families,” PM Modi had posted on X.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Saturday signed an expanded disaster declaration to include six more counties in central Texas, raising the total number of counties hit by flash flooding to 20.

On Sunday, Abbott thanked President Donald Trump, saying that the debris removal process has been improved because of the president’s “swift” disaster declaration, the BBC reported.

While search efforts are continuing in Kerr County, disaster response, for instance debris removal, has also begun, he said, adding that debris “all over the place” could make the search process more difficult.

Abbott stressed about dangers in the next 24 to 48 hours which could pose “public safety threats”.

Heavy rainfall has taken place and more is expected which could lead to potential flash flooding, he said. Areas that could be affected include central Texas and Kerrville.

Freeman F. Martin, Colonel Director, Texas Department of Public Safety, said that operations are ongoing across several counties, noting that the rain will hamper efforts for rescue as the ground becomes saturated from even a little bit of water, the BBC reported.

Martin said that among the resources they are providing are 18 marine units with boats, 11 Texas rangers, and nine helicopters.

He said finding missing children is the “highest priority”, adding that service personnel have been working with the families.

Texas has already experienced several severe flooding incidents this year, and the United States as a whole saw a record number of flash flood emergencies in 2024, according to AccuWeather.

UN Chief Guterres reiterates call for “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire in Ukraine after Russian drone attack

UN chief calls for ceasefire in Gaza

New York [US], July 06: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday condemned the latest large-scale Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, reiterating his call for an “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire as a critical step towards achieving a “just, comprehensive & sustainable peace” in the region.

As per Al Jazeera, citing Ukrainian authorities, Moscow launched over 500 drones and 11 missiles at Kyiv overnight into Friday (local time), resulting in the death of one person, injuries to at least 23 others, and widespread damage to buildings across the capital.

Air raid sirens, the buzz of kamikaze drones, and loud explosions echoed through the city until sunrise.

In a post on X, the UN Chief stated that the attacks, which disrupted the power supply to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, underscored the ongoing risks to nuclear safety, prompting the urgency of halting hostilities in line with the UN Charter, international law, and relevant UN resolutions.

“I strongly condemn the latest series of large-scale drone & missile attacks on Ukraine by Russia. The power supply to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was disrupted – once again underlining the ongoing risks to nuclear safety. I reiterate my call for a full, immediate & unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine as a first step towards a just, comprehensive & sustainable peace, in line with the UN Charter, international law & relevant UN resolutions,” Guterres stated.

Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the day as a “rocky start” but noted significant defensive successes.

“It was a rocky start to the day, with more than 500 Russian attack drones and missiles. Difficult, but a significant number were shot down. Interceptor drones demonstrated important performance today, and we are scaling this up to the hilt,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X.

Zelenskyy also announced a landmark development in Ukraine’s defence strategy in the same post, as Kyiv made an agreement with Denmark on weapons productions.

“Today marks an important decision in Europe — in Denmark — our first agreement on weapons production for Ukraine in Europe. Coproduction between Ukraine and Denmark. This is paramount both in terms of security and investment,” he added.

The deal will allow Ukrainian companies to begin joint weapons production on Danish territory, as reported by New York Post.

This is the first instance of Ukraine establishing military manufacturing operations abroad, as the country seeks to counter intensifying Russian attacks during the conflict.

As per the New York Post, citing Ukraine’s Strategic Industries Minister Herman Smetanin, Denmark is contributing USD 5 million to the initiative, which is designed to support Ukrainian defence startups.

There should be no hesitation in imposing sanctions against terrorists: PM Modi at BRICS

End certain for those daring to wipe off sindoor of our sisters, says PM; slams 'hate-filled' Pak

Rio de Janeiro, July 06: Victims and supporters of terrorism cannot be weighed on the same scale and there should be no hesitation in imposing sanctions against terrorists, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the BRICS Summit on Sunday.

In an address at a session on peace and security, Modi said the “cowardly” Pahalgam terror attack was a direct strike on the “soul, identity and dignity” of India as he called for united efforts to combat the challenge of terrorism.

“Terrorism has become the most serious challenge for humanity today,” he said.

The top leaders of BRICS held deliberations on a range of pressing challenges facing the globe on the first day of the grouping’s two-day annual summit in this seaside Brazilian city.

“This attack was a blow not only on India but on the entire humanity,” Modi said about the Pahalgam attack, adding “condemning terrorism should be our ‘principle’, not just a ‘convenience’”.

“If we first see in which country the attack took place, against whom, then it would be a betrayal against humanity. There should be no hesitation in imposing sanctions against terrorists,” he said.

Modi’s call for imposing sanctions on terrorists without hesitation comes against the backdrop of China blocking efforts at the UN Security Council in recent years to list several Pakistan-based terrorists.

The prime minister also asserted that the victims and supporters of terrorism cannot be “weighed on the same scale”.

Modi’s remarks came against the backdrop of unease in New Delhi over several countries hyphenating India and Pakistan following their May 7-10 military clashes.

“For personal or political gain, giving silent consent to terrorism, supporting terror or terrorists, should not be acceptable under any circumstances,” he said.

“There should be no difference between words and actions regarding terrorism. If we cannot do this, then the question naturally arises whether we are serious about the fight against terrorism or not,” he asked.

The prime minister expressed his “heartfelt gratitude” to the friendly countries who stood with India and supported it following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin skipped the summit, hosted by Brazil in its capacity as the current chair of the grouping.

The BRICS has emerged as an influential grouping as it brings together 11 major emerging economies of the world, representing around 49.5 per cent of the global population, around 40 per cent of the global GDP and around 26 per cent of the global trade.

Modi said global peace and security is not just an ideal, but it is the “foundation of our common interests and future”.

“Development of humanity is possible only in a peaceful and secure environment. BRICS has a very important role in fulfilling this objective,” he said.

“To face our common challenges, we have to unite and make collective efforts. We have to move forward together,” he added.

In his remarks, Modi also expressed serious concerns over the situation in Gaza.

“From West Asia to Europe, today the world is surrounded by disputes and tensions. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is a cause of great concern,” he said.

The prime minister added: “India firmly believes that no matter how difficult the circumstances are, the path of peace is the only option for the welfare of humanity.”

“India is the land of Lord Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi. There is no place for war and violence for us,” he added.

The prime minister said “India supports every effort that takes the world away from division and conflict and leads it towards dialogue, cooperation and coordination and increases solidarity and trust”.

“In this direction, we are committed to cooperation and partnership with all friendly countries,” he said.

India is changing, and so are its women: FM Sitharaman in US

Rio de Janeiro, July 6: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during her meetings with BRICS counterparts here, discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, including cooperation in multiple sectors to further strengthen strategic partnerships, according to an official statement.

In her meeting with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov on the sidelines of the ‘BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ meeting, she discussed India-Russia long-standing partnership.

FM Sitharaman also expressed gratitude for the support extended by President Vladimir Putin after the Pahalgam terror attack, according to a Finance Ministry post on X social media platform.

“The Union Finance Minister observed that India and Russia enjoy exemplary levels of mutual trust and understanding and our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership remains resilient and steadfast,” the ministry informed.

She also congratulated Russia for its successful Chairship of the BRICS in 2024 and said that India will continue to leverage the BRICS platform to build South-South cooperation in areas of common interest. They also discussed modalities of various initiatives recently taken up in BRICS.

The two sides also discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, including cooperation in the financial sector, along with matters related to the New Development Bank (NDB).

FM Sitharaman met Fernando Haddad, Finance Minister of Brazil, and discussed issues of mutual interest, including, South-South cooperation, amplifying the voice of the Global South, COP30 and climate finance issues, and engagement in regional and global forums such as the United Nations, G20, BRICS, WTO and IBSA.

Appreciating the deep work by Brazil during its BRICS Chairship, including commitment to a multipolar world order, and expansion of BRICS, the finance minister said India supports the agenda and priorities set by Brazil, and hopes to carry forward the outcome-oriented cooperation when India takes over the Chairship in January 2026.

FM Sitharaman said that India and Brazil, as strategic partners, share warm and cordial ties spanning across multiple sectors, and are cooperating closely in multiple sectors to further strengthen strategic partnership.

In her meeting with Lan Fo’an, Finance Minister of China, the finance minister underlined that India and China are uniquely positioned to drive inclusive global growth and innovation as the two nations are the largest and fastest-growing economies in the world.

She highlighted that India and China can strengthen collaboration across a wide range of areas due to the common rich human capital, deep civilisational ties, and expanding economic influence, according to the ministry.

The finance minister suggested that deeper engagement between the two countries can help to amplify the voice of developing economies, and shape global narratives that reflect the priorities and aspirations of the Global South.

India crush England by 336 runs, level series with historic win

0
2nd Test: India in sight of victory after Gill’s majestic 161 and Akash-Siraj new ball strikes

Birmingham, Jul 6: An unheralded Akash Deep, hailing from Bihar’s Sasaram, owned the big stage like never before in the absence of an iconic Jasprit Bumrah as Shubman Gill’s young India broke the 58-year-old ‘Edgbaston Jinx’, thrashing England by 336 runs to level the five-Test series 1-1. The 28-year-old Akash Deep took a match haul of 10 wickets, including his maiden five-for – 6/99 in England’s second innings with the hosts getting all out for 271 in pursuit of an improbable 608. If Gill, with his magnificent batting (269 and 161), set it up, Akash deserves equal credit for his lion-hearted effort on a track which was primarily a bowler’s graveyard.

The rain delayed the start of the day by an hour and 40 minutes, reducing the day’s quota of overs to 80, with England resuming their second innings at 72 for three, chasing a near impossible 608.

If Mohammed Siraj (7 wickets and catches) bowled like the leader of the attack in the first innings, Akash Deep built on his first innings gains to strike twice with the new ball early on day five.

Once not having enough opportunities in a nondescript town in Bihar, the journey hasn’t been a bed of roses for the son of a government school teacher, who would survive on pocket money earned by playing tennis ball cricket before scouts in Bengal saw his potential and fast-tracked him into the age-group system seven years back. He played his debut first-class game for Bengal during Christmas in 2019.

In less than six years, his sharp incutters from length that fooled Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook didn’t let his skipper miss the peerless Bumrah.

Akash came into the tour knowing that his sister was suffering from cancer, and he felt that every time he sprinted towards the pitch, the visions of his ailing sister crossed his mind.

‘Ball in Washington’s court on India-US interim trade agreement before July 9’

0
‘India, US trade talks from Apr 23; pact’s terms of reference includes about 19 chapters’

New Delhi, Jul 6: With India setting its red lines on key issues in sectors such as agriculture and dairy for the proposed interim trade agreement with the US, the ball is now in Washington’s court to finalise the deal, sources said. They said if issues are settled, an interim trade pact could be announced before July 9, which marks the end of the 90-day suspension period of the Trump tariffs announced on April 2 on dozens of countries, including India.

“India has drawn its red lines… now the ball is in the US court,” they said.

In February, the two countries announced starting negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). They fixed a deadline to conclude the first tranche or phase of the BTA by fall (September-October) this year. Before that, the two sides are locking to finalise an interim trade pact.

On April 2, the US imposed an additional 26 percent reciprocal tariff on Indian goods but suspended it for 90 days. However, the 10 percent baseline tariff imposed by America remains in place. India is seeking full exemption from this 26 percent tariff.

“If the proposed trade talks fail, the 26 percent tariffs will come into force again,” one of the sources said. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal last week stated that India does not enter into any trade agreement based on deadlines and will accept the proposed trade deal with the US only when it is fully finalised, properly concluded and in the national interest.

FTAs are possible only when both sides benefit, and it should be a win-win agreement, he has said.

“National interest should always be supreme. Keeping that in mind, if a deal is made, then India is always ready to deal with developed countries,” Goyal had said on July 4.

The Indian team returned from Washington last week after holding talks with the US on an interim trade pact. Differences are also there on steel, aluminium (50 percent) and auto (25 percent) tariffs.

India has hardened its position on giving duty concessions to the US on agriculture and dairy products, as both are sensitive subjects. India has never opened the dairy sector in any of the previous trade pacts signed.

US President Donald Trump last week said his administration is sending letters to the first batch of 10-12 countries, sharing details of reciprocal tariff rates, and the entire process could be completed by July 9. His comments came amid increasing suspense in India on whether New Delhi and Washington would be able to firm up a much-anticipated trade deal before the US president’s tariff deadline ends. He has, however, not named the countries.

The president has stated that the reciprocal tariffs would come into effect from August 1. While the US is looking at duty concessions in sectors like certain industrial goods, automobiles (electric vehicles particularly), wines, petrochemical products, dairy, and agriculture items such as apples, tree nuts, and alfalfa hay; India may look at duty cuts for labour-intensive sectors like apparels, textiles, gems and jewellery, leather, plastics, chemicals, oil seeds, shrimp, and horticulture products.

The US is India’s largest trading partner from 2021-22. During 2024-25, the bilateral trade in goods stood at USD 131.84 billion (USD 86.51 billion worth of exports, USD 45.33 billion of imports and USD 41.18 billion trade surplus).

India’s merchandise exports to the US rose 21.78 percent to USD 17.25 billion in April-May this fiscal year, while imports rose 25.8 percent to USD 8.87 billion. The two-way trade in services expanded from USD 54.1 billion in 2018 to an estimated USD 70.5 billion in 2024.

India is also a key destination for American businesses such as professional, scientific, and technical services, manufacturing, and IT. The US accounts for about 18 percent of India’s total goods exports and over 6 percent in imports and about 11 percent in bilateral trade.

India received USD 70.65 billion between April 2000 and March 2025, making Washington the third largest investor. In 2024, India’s main exports to the US included drug formulations and biologicals (USD 8.1 billion), telecom instruments (USD 6.5 billion), precious and semi-precious stones (USD 5.3 billion), petroleum products (USD 4.1 billion), gold and other precious metal jewellery (USD 3.2 billion), ready-made garments of cotton, including accessories (USD 2.8 billion), and products of iron and steel (USD 2.7 billion).

Imports included crude oil (USD 4.5 billion), petroleum products (USD 3.6 billion), coal, coke (USD 3.4 billion), cut and polished diamonds (USD 2.6 billion), electric machinery (USD 1.4 billion), aircraft, spacecraft and parts (USD 1.3 billion), and gold (USD 1.3 billion).

BJP MLA criticises Govt for ignoring BJP constituencies

In Karnah, BJP celebrates 11 years of PM Modi’s Govt

Rajouri, Jul 6: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Kalakote-Sunderbani, Thakur Randhir Singh, criticised the government for deliberately ignoring constituencies led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs.

MLA Thakur Randhir Singh highlighted that despite numerous proposals, no new road projects have been sanctioned for the Sunderbani sub-division, which falls under his constituency and is led by a BJP MLA. The legislator alleged that the National Conference (NC)-led government was practising biased development policies, favouring areas represented by their party members while neglecting the ones led by BJP legislators.

Appealing to the government to immediately sanction all pending road projects in Sunderbani, the legislator warned that if his demands are not met, the BJP would launch an indefinite road strike from July 9.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal assures Srinagar apple traders to look into their demands

Union Minister Piyush Goyal assures Srinagar apple traders to look into their demands

New Delhi, July 06: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday assured apple traders in Jammu and Kashmir to look into their demand for greater protection from imports, but emphasised the need to balance the interests of both growers and consumers.

Goyal also said he will take up the suggestion of stakeholders to reduce goods and services tax (GST) on handicrafts.

The industry has called for a cut in GST from 12 per cent to 5 per cent.

“I have asked them to share the details with the Union finance ministry also. I will also talk and see how to bring (products) in the 5 per cent (GST) bracket… we will try to find a solution to this,” he said, while addressing FTII Traders’ Conclave in Srinagar.

On Kashmiri apples, he said the industry has requested for more protection on this fruit, which at present attracts a minimum import price (MIP) Rs 50 per Kg and 50 per cent import duty.

After accounting for all charges and costs, including transportation, marketing, branding, and retailing, consumers pay Rs 125-150 per kg, he said, adding that there is also a need to balance the interests of consumers and farmers.

At present, India imports 4.5-5 tonnes of apple every year to meet the shortage in the domestic market.

“I will talk to the (Union) agriculture ministry (on the issue),” he said.

Further, he said India is signing new free trade agreements (FTAs) to provide nearer market access to Indian goods and services.

He added that India will always protect the interest of Indian industry and consumers on these agreements.

“This is our priority. We will always protect the interest of Jammu and Kashmir and the county in these pacts,” the minister said.

The remarks assume significance as the US is seeking duty concessions on apples in the proposed trade agreement with India.
