Military conflict during Operation Sindoor signals deeper China-Pak bond: Shringla

Military conflict during Operation Sindoor signals deeper China-Pak bond: Shringla

Pune, Nov 04: The military conflict during Operation Sindoor was indicative of a deeper China-Pakistan strategic partnership, former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has said.

He also noted that China’s involvement has extended beyond defence supplies to include intelligence and diplomatic support, forming an ‘all-weather’ alliance intended to constrain India’s rise.

Shringla spoke on India’s foreign policy and strategic affairs on Monday during an interaction organised by the Pune International Centre (PIC) and moderated by former Indian Ambassador to China Gautam Bambawale.

He stated that India’s foreign policy reflects a balance between realism and idealism, guided by developmental imperatives, strategic autonomy, and an inclusive global outlook.

Shringla, who also served as India’s Chief Coordinator for the G20 Presidency, shared his perspectives on the country’s evolving foreign policy, regional dynamics, and strategic priorities in a rapidly changing global order.

The discussion spanned critical themes, including India’s relations with China and Pakistan, the changing nature of modern warfare, and the increasing role of technology, drones, and cyber tools in defence and diplomacy, according to a release issued by the PIC.

Shringla underlined the importance of strategic deterrence, skilled diplomacy, and a clear focus on domestic growth to strengthen India’s international position.

Addressing questions on Pakistan’s use of Chinese weaponry during Operation Sindoor, he described the conflict as “indicative of a deeper China-Pakistan strategic partnership”.

He noted that China’s involvement extended beyond defence supplies to include intelligence and diplomatic support, forming an ‘all-weather’ alliance intended to constrain India’s rise, and called for a response through capacity building, innovation, and partnerships grounded in India’s strategic interests.

On the Pakistan-US dynamic after Operation Sindoor, Shringla observed that Field Marshal Asim Munir had consolidated authority and regained Washington’s attention under the Trump 2.0 administration.

Drawing from his experience as India’s Ambassador to the United States, he contrasted Pakistan’s short-term tactical approach with India’s long-term, institutional diplomacy, according to a release.

He highlighted that India’s strength lies in building durable partnerships across the US, Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and the Global South, anchored in shared democratic values, trade, technology, and security cooperation.

Shringla stressed that India does not accept third-party mediation in bilateral issues, in accordance with the Simla Agreement, and observed that the abrogation of Article 370 has integrated Jammu and Kashmir into the national mainstream, thereby restoring stability, except for sporadic incidents of cross-border terrorism.

Speaking on regional and global balancing, he highlighted the importance of the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, alongside deeper engagement with the Global South, West Asia, and Southeast Asia, the release added.

He also highlighted India’s ambition to emerge as a “thought and technology” leader, citing the upcoming Global AI Summit as a key step in shaping governance frameworks for emerging technologies.

Discussing the US-China strategic rivalry, Shringla remarked that while the global order appears to be moving toward a G2 framework, India must not cede its strategic space.

He asserted that India’s growing economic and technological capacity positions it as an indispensable third pole in a multi-polar world.

He urged a focus on strengthening domestic ecosystems in semiconductors, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, pharmaceuticals, and rare earths to reinforce India’s global standing, the release added.

If HIRE Bill in US becomes reality, it will light a fire in Indian economy: Congress

If HIRE Bill in US becomes reality, it will light a fire in Indian economy: Congress

New Delhi, Nov 04: The Congress on Tuesday said a bill introduced in the US Senate proposing a 25 per cent tax on any American person making an outsourcing payment will “light a fire in the Indian economy” if it becomes a reality.

The opposition party said the bill reflects a growing mindset in the US that while blue-collar jobs were “lost” to China, white-collar jobs should not be “lost to India.”

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh made the remarks, referring to the Halting International Relocation of Employment Act, or HIRE Act Bill, introduced on October 6 by Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Finance, he said on X.

The bill proposes a 25 per cent tax on any US person making an outsourcing payment, defined as “any money paid by a US company or taxpayer to a foreign person whose work benefits consumers in the United States,” he said.

The bill has a direct and deep impact on India’s IT services, BPO, consulting and GCCs (global capability centres), Ramesh said.

Other countries like Ireland, Israel, and the Philippines too will be impacted but the maximum effect will be on India’s exports of services which has been a marked success story over the past quarter of a century, he said.

Ramesh said the bill in its present form may or may not pass, and may get modified.

“It may just linger. But one thing is clear – the Bill reflects a growing mindset in the US that while blue-collar jobs were ‘lost’ to China, white-collar jobs should not be ‘lost to India’,” he claimed.

Nobody expected a year ago that the India-US economic relationship would take so many knocks – of which the HIRE Bill is another reflection, Ramesh said.

“If ever HIRE becomes a reality it will light a fire in the Indian economy which may have to face a new normal in relation to the US,” the Congress leader said.

The proposed HIRE Act, introduced by Senator Bernie Moreno, if passed, will curb outsourcing and promote domestic employment by imposing a 25 per cent levy on payments made by American companies to foreign workers for services benefiting US consumers.

Ramesh also shared a link to the provisions of the bill.

Bangladesh records 1,147 new dengue cases in 24 hours

Bangladesh records 1,147 new dengue cases in 24 hours

Dhaka, Nov 04: Bangladesh reported 1,147 new dengue cases and five new deaths in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health said.

According to the data, 2,960 dengue cases were recorded so far in November, taking the tally to 72,822 and the death toll to 288 so far this year.

Dengue fever, typically a monsoon-season illness in Bangladesh, is now spreading beyond its usual June-September period, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes and is found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide, mostly in urban and semi-urban areas. The primary vectors that transmit the disease are Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and, to a lesser extent, Aedes albopictus.

There is no specific treatment for dengue; however, the timely detection of cases, identifying any warning signs of severe dengue infection, and appropriate case management are key elements of care to lower case fatality rates to less than 1 per cent.

Dengue was first recorded in the 1960s in Bangladesh (then known as East Pakistan) and was known as “Dacca fever”. Since 2010 cases of dengue appear to coincide with the rainy season from May to September and higher temperatures. Bangladesh’s climate conditions are becoming more favourable for the transmission of dengue and other vector-borne diseases including malaria and chikungunya virus due to excessive rainfall, waterlogging, flooding, rise in temperature and the unusual shifts in the country’s traditional seasons.

Dengue is endemic in Bangladesh with recurrent outbreaks and is one of the major public health concerns in Bangladesh. Dengue virus has the potential to cause epidemics resulting in high morbidity and mortality.

All four serotypes of the dengue virus have been reported in Bangladesh with the predominance of DENV 1 and DENV2 until 2016. Since 2019, when the largest dengue outbreak was reported, DENV3 has been the predominant serotype, while this year DENV2 has become the predominant serotype.

Trump on mayoral poll eve

Trump on mayoral poll eve

New York, Nov 04: US President Donald Trump has warned voters that New York City will be a “complete and total economic and social disaster” and its “survival” will be at risk if Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral race, as he officially endorsed former governor Andrew Cuomo for the city’s top post.

In a post on Truth Social on election eve on Monday, Trump also threatened that he will send only the minimum-required federal funds to New York City if Mamdani wins the election and becomes the mayor.

“If Communist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the election for mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing federal funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home, because of the fact that, as a Communist, this once great city has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!

“It can only get worse with a Communist at the helm, and I don’t want to send, as president, good money after bad. It is my obligation to run the nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win,” Trump said on Truth Social.

In an official endorsement of former New York State governor Cuomo in the final stretch of the mayoral election, Trump said, “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!”

Indian-descent Mamdani, 34, born in Uganda and raised in NYC, is a New York State Assembly member and Democratic socialist running for mayor.

He will face-off against Cuomo, who is running as an independent candidate, and the Republican nominee, Curtis Sliwa, on the ballots on Tuesday.

Slamming Mamdani, Trump said his principles have been tested for over a thousand years, and never once have they been successful.

“I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a record of success, WIN, than a Communist with no experience and a record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE,” Trump said.

Describing Mamdani as a “nothing” in his role as an Assemblyman, Trump said he “ranked at the bottom of the class and, as the mayor of potentially, again, the greatest city in the world, HE HAS NO CHANCE to bring it back to its former glory!”

“We must also remember this – a vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani,” Trump said.

Current NYC Mayor Eric Adams, whose administration has been plagued by scandals, dropped out of the mayoral race in September.

November 4 is election day across the US, with polls to be held from 6 am to 9 pm. The early voting period, which commenced October 25, ended on Sunday.

Mamdani, the son of acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan author of Indian ancestry, upset Cuomo in the Democratic primary race for NYC mayor and was declared victorious in June.

The Board of Elections has said that more than 735,000 people voted early in this election, which is about four times the number of ballots cast during the 2021 election.

Mamdani has emerged as the front-runner in the election race, and promised to “lower costs and make life easier” for New Yorkers as the city gets “too expensive”.

He has vowed that as the mayor, he will immediately freeze the rent for all stabilised tenants, and use every available resource to build the housing New Yorkers need and bring down the rent.

Trump has been critical of Mamdani, describing him as a “Communist” and “far worse than a Socialist”.

In an interview to CBS ‘60 Minutes’ on Sunday, Trump said Mamdani “will do a worse job” than former NYC mayor Bill de Blasio by far.

“And it’s gonna be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York. Because if you have a Communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there.

“So I don’t know that he’s won, and I’m not a fan of Cuomo one way or the other, but if it’s gonna be between a bad Democrat and a Communist, I’m gonna pick the bad Democrat all the time, to be honest with you,” Trump said in the interview.

Banihal, Nov 3: A new era of development has begun in the Banihal–Gool constituency with MLA Banihal Sajjad Shaheen launching the macadamisation of two major road projects in Gool, reaffirming the National Conference Government’s commitment to equitable and inclusive development across Jammu and Kashmir.

The works include 2 km of the Gool Bus Stand–Salbala Road and the Grathmorh–Moila via Shamti Road, taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 1.40 crore, while the Grathmorh–Moila via Shamti Road, covering 4 km, has been constructed at a cost of Rs 9 crore under NABARD, greatly improving road connectivity and easing travel for residents of the area.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Banihal said that these projects symbolize the beginning of a new phase of progress and reflect the Government’s resolve to bring development to every corner, especially remote and hilly areas. He said improved infrastructure will strengthen access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, uplifting the overall standard of living for people of the region.

CM Omar, Mehbooba’s approach on prisoners legally weak, politically convenient: Inam Un Nabi

Srinagar, Nov 3: AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi has sharply criticised Mehbooba Mufti and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing both leaders of taking selective, confused and legally flawed positions on the issue of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in outside jails.

While addressing gathering in Budgam, Inam Un Nabi questioned Mehbooba Mufti’s political intent, asking: “Why does Mehbooba Mufti only demand shifting of prisoners but never demands their release? What stops her from raising the real humanitarian issue that families actually want addressed?”

Inam added that Mehbooba herself claims that shifting of prisoners falls under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, yet she approached the High Court instead of the Supreme Court. “This is legally inconsistent and politically misleading. If she believed the matter lies with the Supreme Court, why take a weaker legal route?” “Approaching the High Court ensured headlines, not results.

This exposes the lack of seriousness,” Inam said.
