Trump claims Pakistan among nations conducting nuclear tests

Trump claims Pakistan among nations conducting nuclear tests

New Delhi, Nov 3: US President Donald Trump has claimed that Pakistan is among several countries actively testing nuclear weapons, a justification, he said, for his administration’s decision to restart America’s own nuclear testing programme after more than three decades.

According to a report in The Times of India, Trump made the remarks during an interview with CBS News’s 60 Minutes on Sunday, alleging that Russia, China, North Korea and Pakistan were all conducting nuclear tests while the United States had refrained from doing so.

“Russia’s testing and China’s testing, but they don’t talk about it. We’re an open society. We’re different. We talk about it because otherwise you people are going to report. They don’t have reporters that are going to be writing about it,” Trump said, as reported by ANI.

He went on to say, “We’re going to test because they test and others test. And certainly North Korea’s been testing. Pakistan’s been testing.” When pressed about the implications of resuming nuclear detonations, Trump argued that such tests were essential to ensure the reliability and advancement of America’s weapons systems, pointing to recent nuclear-capable trials by Russia.

“You have to see how they work… We’re the only country that doesn’t test. And I don’t want to be the only country that doesn’t test,” he added. The Times of India report noted that Trump’s announcement, made first on social media minutes before his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea caused considerable confusion among US officials and international observers. The last confirmed US nuclear explosion took place in 1992.

While no country apart from North Korea is known to have carried out a full-scale nuclear detonation in recent decades, Trump maintained that other nations “test way underground where people don’t know exactly what’s happening.” US Energy Secretary Chris Wright later sought to clarify the statement, saying that current internal discussions referred only to “non-critical” system evaluations and not live nuclear explosions.

Clay, courage and commitment: The inspiring story of Shopian’s 80-year-old woman

Shopian, Nov 03: Sitting at her old shop with clay utensils arranged in an apple pie order on rickety wooden shelves, octogenarian Khitija Bano carefully lifts an urn with her wrinkled hands and shows it to a customer. After a brief round of haggling, the customer pays for the pot and walks away, leaving Bano to dust her wares and rearrange them patiently.

For years, Bano has been managing this small pottery shop in Kellar, an outlying tehsil in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. She sports a traditional Kashmiri pheran adorned with delicate embroidery, its faded purple fabric bearing the marks of years of use.

Around her, shelves sag under the weight of earthen vessels, piggy banks, and tumbakh naris, the traditional clay drums used in Kashmiri weddings and folk music. “After my husband’s health deteriorated many years ago, I took charge of the shop,” said Bano, her voice soft but steady.

The mother of three daughters, she purchases the earthenware from a potter in a nearby village and sells it at her shop. “I earn enough to provide for my family,” she added, glancing toward the narrow road that leads to her home in Dunaro, a small village just a short drive away. Kellar, surrounded by apple orchards and thick forests, comprises more than two dozen villages. Most of its population belongs to the Gujjar and Bakerwal communities—tribal groups that live modestly, relying on livestock, forest produce, and small trades for sustenance.

While earthenware has disappeared from both rural and urban households across Kashmir, replaced by aluminium, steel, and plastic, the marginalised communities here continue to use them. “These are the people who still eat in these clay utensils,” said Abdul Aziz, a local resident. “They have kept the tradition alive.”

Once a common sight in every Kashmiri kitchen, clay utensils were prized for their ability to keep water cool and enhance the flavour of food. However, cheaper, more durable materials and changing lifestyles have pushed pottery to the margins. Despite dwindling sales, Bano opens her shop every morning, sitting for hours in the mellow autumn sun. Customers are few, and her monthly income barely reaches Rs10,000–12,000. Yet she continues, driven as much by habit and dignity as by the desire to preserve a craft her family once depended on.

Gold falls by Rs 300 to Rs 1,25,300/10g as firm dollar, trade optimism curb safe-haven demand

New Delhi, Nov 03: Gold prices fell by Rs 300 to Rs 1,25,300 per 10 grams in the national capital on Monday as a stronger dollar and easing global uncertainties weighed on investor appetite for the safe-haven asset.

The precious metal of 99.5 per cent purity declined by Rs 300 to Rs 1,24,700 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). It had closed at Rs 1,25,000 per 10 grams on Friday, according to the All India Sarafa Association. Gold of 99.9 per cent purity had settled at Rs 1,25,600 per 10 grams on Friday.

On the other hand, silver rallied by Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,54,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) from Friday’s closing of Rs 1,53,000 per kg.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.09 per cent to 99.89, weighed on bullion prices.

In international markets, spot gold slipped below USD 4,000, declining 0.14 per cent to USD 3,996.77 per ounce, while spot silver was marginally lower at USD 48.64 per ounce.

“Gold prices fell below USD 4,000 per ounce on Monday, extending losses from the previous session, as expectations for further rate cuts diminished and safe-haven demand eased after a US-China trade deal,” Jigar Trivedi, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities, said.

Meanwhile, China removed a long-standing tax incentive on gold sales, a move that could raise consumer prices and weaken demand in one of the world’s largest bullion markets.

“Traders will now focus on this week’s US macroeconomic events including ISM PMI figures and ADP private payroll data,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

The data releases will provide more cues on the monetary policy.

Kishtwar, Nov 03: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today laid the foundation stone for construction of new houses for flood-affected families in Chishoti Paddar in Kishtwar.

19 houses that were completely damaged during natural disaster that struck Chishoti will be rebuilt free of cost with support of High-range Rural Development Society (HRDS India), a Civil Society Organisation.

In his address, the Lieutenant Governor paid homage to the citizens and security personnel who lost their lives due to the tragic natural disaster.

“The catastrophic floods swept away precious lives, wiped out several homes and tore through infrastructure. I am hopeful that the three-bedroom pre-fabricated smart houses for which the foundation stone was laid today will help bring the lives of the affected families back on track,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor appreciated the High-range Rural Development Society (HRDS India) for its noble initiative.

“Since SDRF relief is insufficient, I had earlier requested HRDS India to rebuild 1,500 fully damaged houses across the UT under Operation Sindoor and in the aftermath of August floods, to which they had agreed. This initiative will provide huge relief to the affected families,” he said.

Each house will feature a concrete foundation and utilizing prefabricated technology, including fiber cement boards, powder-coated GI sheets, and a steel structural framework with C-channel sections. These materials have been selected for their strength, durability, and ability to withstand harsh climatic conditions, ensuring long-term resilience and suitability to the region’s environment. Every reconstructed unit will be developed as a “Smart House,” incorporating modern design elements for comfort, safety, and functionality.

On the occasion, the Lieutenant Governor expressed his gratitude to all the emergency responders, district administration, Army, NDRF, SDRF, Police, armed forces, local community, youth and voluntary organizations for saving precious lives, evacuating Machail Mata devotees to safety and providing timely medical care.

“I must commend the profound resilience of the people of Chishoti. Nature has tested them severely, but this strong community met the challenge head-on,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor reaffirmed his commitment, under the guidance of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi for complete rehabilitation of the flood-affected families and meeting the development needs of the people of Kishtwar.

“In a boost to our efforts to provide modern infrastructure to Paddar Kishtwar, Government of India has sanctioned an Army Goodwill School and One Petrol Pump at Paddar,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

He also announced that Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will reconstruct Atholi to Machail Mata Road and build a new bridge in Chishoti. He further said that all the black spots in Mobile Network Connection have been identified and land has been transferred to BSNL to set up new 4G towers.

During his visit, the Lieutenant Governor interacted with the local residents and listened to their issues and demands. He directed the District Administration to connect the youth with self-employment opportunities through Mission Yuva.

The Lieutenant Governor said the ongoing works for the augmentation of facilities for the pilgrims at Machail Mata will be completed by the month of May, 2026. He also assured that the appropriate steps will be taken to meet the demand for construction of Yatri Niwas at Paddar.

‘Shocking, will deal with iron hand’, says SC on over Rs 3000 crore being extorted in digital arrest cases

New Delhi, Nov 03: The Supreme Court on Monday said it needs to deal with digital arrest cases with an iron hand as it expressed shock over the scale of such cybercrime cases in the country, with over Rs 3000 crore allegedly extorted from victims, including senior citizens.

Digital arrest is a growing form of cybercrime in which fraudsters pose as law enforcement or court officials or personnel from government agencies to intimidate victims through audio and video calls. They hold the victims hostage and put pressure on them to pay money.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan and Joymalya Bagchi, which appointed an amicus curiae to assist the court in the matter, perused two sealed cover reports submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Central Bureau of Investigation.

“It is shocking that over Rs 3000 crore have been collected from the victims, including senior citizens, across the country. If we don’t pass stringent and harsh orders, this problem will magnify.

“We have to strengthen the hands of our agencies through judicial orders. We are determined to deal with these crimes with iron hands,” the bench observed.

The top court posted the matter for hearing on November 10 and said that it will pass certain directions based on the suggestions from the amicus.

Justice Kant said that the CBI has pointed out that crime syndicates were being operated from offshore locations where they have “scam compounds” having financial, technical and human pillars.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and the CBI, said that the Ministry of Home Affairs’s cybercrime division is dealing with these issues.

The apex court has taken cognisance of a letter written by an elderly woman from Haryana’s Ambala to Chief Justice of India BR Gavai complaining that she and her husband were put under the so-called “digital arrest” on the basis of forged orders of the court and probe agencies by fraudsters, who extorted Rs 1.05 crore from them in September.

The woman said the court orders were shown through multiple audio and video calls by people impersonating as CBI, ED and judicial officers to arrest them.

The top court was informed that two FIRs were lodged with the cyber crime department at Ambala under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitya (BNS).

On October 27, the top court said it is inclined to entrust the CBI with the probe into digital arrest cases after taking into consideration the magnitude and pan-India spread of such crimes.

It had sought details of FIRs registered in different states and Union territories.

The top court had said it would monitor the progress of the CBI investigation and issue whatever directions necessary to deal with these crimes.

It had asked the CBI to respond whether it needs more resources, including cyber experts who are not in the police force, to investigate digital arrest cases.

On October 17, taking note of the rising incidents of online fraud in the country, especially digital arrests to dupe citizens by fabricating judicial orders, the top court sought responses from the Centre and the CBI, saying such offences strike at the “very foundation” of public trust in the system.

The apex court had flagged the rising number of digital arrest cases across the country and said forging apex court, high court orders and signatures of judges to digitally arrest innocent people, including senior citizens, strikes at the bottom of trust and faith of people in judicial institutions.

It said the forgery of documents and the criminal misuse of the name, seal and judicial orders of this court or high court is a matter of grave concern, and such criminal acts cannot be treated as an ordinary or solitary offence of cheating or cyber crime.

Farooq Abdullah accuses L-G of sitting on files, urges PM to restore statehood

Jammu, Nov 03: National Conference president and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Monday accused Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of sitting on government files and obstructing the implementation of business rules.

He also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure swift restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

“He (L-G) is sitting on the files. How many times will I tell him? Scores of files are with him and they are not moving. I told him one day that you have demoted Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences. He said, ‘No, no, it has got its autonomy.’ It was a complete lie,” Abdullah told reporters here.

Responding to a question from reporters about the chief minister and the L-G criticising each other, he said, “I hope those who are sitting on the files will send them back. Business rules must be implemented, shouldn’t they?”

The former chief minister said this is the people’s government. “The people have voted for this government. The rules must be fully implemented,” he added.

Asked if the L-G was preventing the elected government from performing its duties, Abdullah said it was not about stopping work but about interfering.

“It is the way he is dealing with things. He is delaying them, that is all he does. He must stop doing it. He should be a friend of the people and the government. That’s what he is sitting there for,” the senior leader said.

On statehood restoration, Abdullah expressed optimism and appealed to the Prime Minister to pay attention to Jammu and Kashmir’s problems.

“God willing, that too will happen. It will happen soon,” he said. “I request the Prime Minister to be benevolent on Jammu and Kashmir so that its difficulties are removed.”

“We request him to give special attention to the statehood matter and ensure that it is restored as soon as possible,” he said.

Abdullah added that the Secretariat’s arrival would benefit Jammu and urged people to unite for the region’s development. “I hope Jammu will get the greatest benefit from it,” he added.
