Case filed over IHPL controversy, probe underway: Police

Srinagar, Nov 03: Following reports of chaos, cancellations and unpaid dues surrounding the private cricket league – Indian Heaven Premier League (IHPL) T20 in Srinagar, police have filed a case and initiated a probe into the matter.

A top police officer said that an FIR under relevant sections of law has been registered, while a probe is underway.

Reportedly, players associated with the league alleged that they were not paid their promised payments and were asked not to come to the stadium due to “technical issues.”

Some also claimed they were asked to vacate their hotel accommodations.

The IHPL featured several local and international cricketers but was not recognised either by the BCCI or the JKCA, raising questions about its legitimacy. —(KNO)

Banihal, Nov 03: The government has initiated “strict action” against medical staff, including three MBBS doctors posted at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Khari in Ramban’s Banihal, for their alleged unauthorized absence from duty on Monday.

The matter came to light after five persons sustained injuries when a Tempo Traveller met with an accident on the Mangit road in the remote Khari area of Banihal on Monday morning. The injured were initially taken to PHC Khari for first aid; however, due to the alleged absence of medical officers and limited facilities, they were later shifted to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Banihal for specialized treatment.

Locals of Khari Aarpinchla alleged that at the time of the incident, only one BUMS doctor was present at PHC Khari, while three MBBS doctors posted there were absent from duty. The alleged negligence sparked public outrage, with residents demanding immediate administrative action.

Taking serious note of the matter, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Banihal Mohammad Naseeb direct Tehsildar Khari to inquire into the allegations of staff absenteeism at PHC Khari.

“An explanation has been sought from the concerned medical officers, and strict action will follow based on the inquiry findings. Public health services in remote areas cannot be compromised,” SDM Banihal said.

Following the directions of the SDM, the Block Medical Officer (BMO) Ukheral issued an explanation notice to three doctors — Dr. Waseem Raja, Dr. Showkat Ahmed, and Dr. Sameer Ahmed — for their alleged absence from duty. The doctors have been asked to report immediately and explain their position within two days.

The order further mentions that their salaries for the month of October 2025 will remain withheld pending inquiry.

Meanwhile, officials at SDH Banihal confirmed that two of the five injured persons are in critical condition and have been further referred to GMC Anantnag for further treatment and CT SCANs.

Mehbooba Mufti urges judicial reforms for J&K prisoners

Mehbooba Mufti urges judicial reforms for J&K prisoners

Srinagar, Nov 3: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Monday made an emotional appeal for judicial reforms in Jammu and Kashmir, describing the plight of prisoners lodged in jails across India as a “humanitarian crisis” rather than a political issue.

Speaking to reporters outside the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, the former Chief Minister said, “Courts are our last hope.” She urged the judiciary to intervene and ensure justice, compassion, and constitutional safeguards for hundreds of Kashmiri youth incarcerated in distant states.

“Behind every number and every case, there is a story — a mother waiting for her son, a father growing old in silence, a child sleeping each night without knowing when their parent will return,” Mehbooba said, calling the situation deeply painful and unjust.

The PDP chief stressed that the issue transcends politics and must be addressed as a question of humanity and fairness. She said the young men jailed outside J&K are “not statistics but sons of this soil” who deserve dignity, fair trials, and an opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Mehbooba Mufti called upon the Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court to take note of systemic flaws in the region’s criminal justice system. She proposed a series of reforms including:

Local Lodgement: Prisoners from J&K should be kept in local prisons so that families can visit them and trials can proceed fairly.

Speedy Trials: She emphasized that “justice delayed is justice denied,” urging the judiciary to uphold Article 21 of the Constitution guaranteeing the right to life and liberty.

Transparency in Trials: The accused, she said, must be allowed to attend every hearing to ensure transparency.

Bail, Not Jail: She reiterated the principle that detention should be an exception, not the norm.

Remission, Parole & Furlough: Mehbooba said these are legal rights that must not be treated as “political favours.”

Medical Bail: Should be considered a constitutional safeguard for the ailing.

Implementation of Jail Manuals: Prisons, she said, should reform lives rather than destroy them.

“For years, our youth have been languishing in prisons in Agra, Bareilly, Haryana and other states,” she said. “Their families neither have the means nor the strength to travel such long distances. Trials are delayed, hearings are held in their absence, and justice remains out of reach. This is not the idea of justice our Constitution envisions.”

Reaffirming her belief in the judicial system, Mehbooba expressed optimism that the courts would ultimately uphold justice and human dignity.

“We have faith in our judiciary and hope in our courts. I believe the day is not far when justice will prevail, and our courts will ensure the ‘Ghar Wapsi’ — the return of all J&K prisoners to their homeland,” she concluded.

Hyderabad, Nov 03: At least 19 people were killed and four others suffered injuries when a tipper lorry carrying gravel collided head-on with a public transport bus in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana on Monday, police said.

The tipper collided with the Telangana Road Transport Corporation (RTC) vehicle near Chevella this morning, resulting in the gravel falling on the bus.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident.

He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs to the families of those who died, and Rs 50,000 each to the injured.

The 19 deceased included 10 women, a police official told PTI.

The driver of the bus, travelling to Hyderabad from Tandur, was among the dead.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “deeply saddened” by the loss of lives in the accident.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the affected individuals and their family members during this difficult time. I pray that the injured recover quickly.

From PMNRF, we will provide compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of those who died, and Rs 50,000 each to the injured,” the PM said.

Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar told media that the state government would offer Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh to those injured.

LG Sinha orders DCs, SSPs to weed out fake journalists, calls for mandatory registration and accountability of online media platforms

According to officials privy to the meeting, the issue of “fake journalists” was discussed during yesterday’s high-level review meeting chaired by the Lieutenant Governor in Srinagar. The matter, which had also figured in the recently concluded autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, drew serious concern from the administration.

“The LG was categorical that those misusing the name of journalism must face the law. He directed all Deputy Commissioners and SSPs to take concrete steps to identify such elements and weed them out from the system,” a senior official present in the meeting told news agency Kashmir Dot Com.

The Lieutenant Governor is learned to have also instructed the officers to work jointly to prepare a verified database of accredited and active journalists in every district. Departments have also been told to entertain only those media representatives whose credentials are duly verified by the DIPR.

The Lieutenant Governor further directed that individuals or groups running Facebook pages, online news portals, or social media handles under the banner of journalism must be duly registered and verified by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR). He emphasized that such digital media platforms must be made accountable for the content they publish and should function strictly within the bounds of media ethics and lawful reporting.

Officials said the move comes amid growing complaints that certain individuals posing as journalists were misusing media identification cards or social media platforms to intimidate officials and extract favours. Several legislators in the recent Assembly session had also raised this concern and sought a mechanism to curb the menace.

“The government values the role of genuine journalists who report with integrity and responsibility,” another senior officer said. “However, action against those bringing disrepute to the profession is inevitable.”

Earlier, the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) J&K directed all District Information Officers in Kashmir to intensify vigilance against fake journalists. (KDC)

Darbar Move will significantly boost Jammu’s economy: CM Omar

Darbar Move will significantly boost Jammu’s economy: CM Omar

Jammu, Nov 03: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Monday said that the restoration of the historic Darbar Move tradition after four years will significantly boost Jammu’s economy and reinforce unity between Jammu and Srinagar.

Speaking to reporters in Jammu, CM Omar said that the discontinuation of the Darbar Move had delivered a major setback to Jammu. “We had promised people that we would restore the Darbar Move. Today, the Darbar Move has been restored. I hope this will give a significant boost to the economy of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the decision to stop the practice earlier was taken purely on financial grounds, ignoring its emotional and symbolic value. “Not everything should be measured in monetary terms. Some things hold emotional significance. The Darbar Move connected Srinagar and Jammu. By ending it, a blow was dealt to the unity of Jammu and Kashmir, which we have now tried to rectify,” he said.

Omar added that the enthusiastic welcome the government received in Jammu today was proof of the public sentiment attached to the decision. “You must have seen today — the love, affection and welcome we received. It took us an hour to reach because of the overwhelming response. Jammu had suffered when the Darbar Move was discontinued, and traders had repeatedly raised concerns,” he said.

He asserted that the move will not only help the business community but also strengthen emotional and cultural ties between both regions. “Sometimes some people create a distance between Jammu and Srinagar for political gains. We want to bridge that distance,” he added.

Omar said special arrangements have been made to ensure smooth resumption of the biannual office shift and that it may take a few days for all departments to settle fully—(KNO)

PM Modi congratulates women’s cricket team on World Cup win

New Delhi, Nov 03: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team on winning their maiden ICC World Cup and said the entire country is overjoyed with their success.

Addressing the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) here, the PM said, “This event is related to science. But first, I will talk about India’s spectacular victory in cricket.”

“Entire India is overjoyed with the success of its cricket team. This is India’s first Women’s World Cup. I congratulate our women’s cricket team. We are proud of you. Your success will inspire millions of young people across the country,” Modi said.

The Indian women’s cricket team kept its date with history by winning its first-ever World Cup with a 52-run victory over South Africa to script a golden chapter in the country’s pantheon of sporting achievements in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

Indian women create history, win ODI World Cup after beating South Africa by 52 runs

Navi Mumbai, Nov 03: The Indian women’s cricket team kept its date with history by winning its first-ever World Cup with a 52-run victory over South to script a golden chapter in the country’s pantheon of sporting achievements here on Sunday.

Shafali Verma, the 21-year-old, who till last week wasn’t even in the reserves, created memories of a lifetime by scoring 87 in India’s 298 for 7 and then grabbed a couple of crucial wickets to restrict the Proteas Women to 246 in front of a packed DY Patil Stadium.

The seasoned Deepti Sharma (5/39) and young Shree Charani (1/48) also did their bit under extreme pressure to usher in the most memorable day for women’s cricket in the country.

If June 25, 1983 was a watershed moment for Indian men’s cricket, when Kapil’s Devils beat the mighty West Indies at the Lord’s, November 2, 2025 will be a seminal moment for women’s cricket movement.

Rohit Sharma, who carries the scars of November 19, 2023, was watching the final from the stands with a prayer on his lips that Harmanpreet Kaur doesn’t meet his fate.

For Harmanpreet, the lady who has done way more for Indian women’s cricket than anyone can envisage, knows how much it hurts to lose a final as it happened eight summers back and her girls didn’t let her down.

As she latched on to Nadine de Klerk’s offering while back pedaling at extra cover, Ian Bishop fittingly called the moment “inspiring generations”. It couldn’t have been more poetic with AR Rahman’s rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ reverberating across the stands.

At the other end was the regal Laura Wolvaardt, who gave everything by scoring 101 off 98 balls.

For head coach Amol Muzumdar, the ‘Nearly Man’ of Indian cricket, who couldn’t wear the whites that he richly deserved, the global triumph with the women’s national team would certainly heal those wounds that he has carried for years.

This isn’t just another World Cup triumph but something whose social impact will only be understood may be two decades from now.

Eleven special women, led by their firebrand skipper, from now on are not just role models but a beacon of hope for every girl from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, who aspire to pick up the willow and the white cherry, knowing that the sky is the limit.
