Decision on summer vacation extension likely on Sunday: Education Minister Sakina Itoo

Srinagar, July 05: Jammu and Kashmir’s Education Minister, Sakina Itoo, on Saturday said that the government will take a final decision on the possible extension of summer vacations on Sunday, keeping in view the ongoing heatwave that has gripped the region.

Speaking to reporters, Sakina Itoo acknowledged the growing concerns from students and parents alike, saying the department has been receiving numerous calls requesting the government to extend the summer break. “We have received a lot of phone calls from worried parents and students urging us to consider an extension in summer vacations due to the persistent heatwave,” she said.

The education minister, however, noted that a formal decision would be taken after assessing weather conditions on Sunday. “We are monitoring the situation very closely. If the heatwave persists tomorrow, we will announce an appropriate decision in the interest of children’s health and well-being,” she added.

Expressing concern over the intense weather, Sakina Itoo said she hoped for rainfall and divine mercy. “We pray for rain and hope Allah shows mercy upon us. The well-being of our students remains our top priority,” she said.

The Kashmir Valley has been witnessing unusually high temperatures over the past several days, prompting repeated appeals from various quarters for an extension in the summer holidays. The existing break, announced earlier for government and recognized private schools, is currently scheduled to end tomorrow (Sunday). [KNT]

New gene therapy shows potential for restoring hearing loss

New gene therapy shows potential for restoring hearing loss

New Delhi, July 05: In a significant scientific breakthrough, an international team of researchers has developed a novel gene therapy that can improve hearing in children and adults with congenital deafness or severe hearing impairment.

In the study, Swedish and Chinese used gene therapy and improved hearing in 10 patients, and the treatment was well-tolerated.

“This is a huge step forward in the genetic treatment of deafness, one that can be life-changing for children and adults,” said Maoli Duan, consultant and docent at the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden.

The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, comprised 10 patients between the ages of 1 and 24 at five hospitals in China, all of whom had a genetic form of deafness or severe hearing impairment caused by mutations in a gene called OTOF.

These mutations cause a deficiency of the protein otoferlin, which plays a critical part in transmitting auditory signals from the ear to the brain.

The gene therapy involved using a synthetic adeno-associated virus (AAV) to deliver a functional version of the OTOF gene to the inner ear via a single injection through a membrane at the base of the cochlea called the round window.

The gene therapy worked rapidly and helped the majority of the patients to recover some hearing in just a month.

A six-month follow-up showed considerable hearing improvement in all participants, with the average volume of perceptible sound improving from 106 decibels to 52.

The younger patients, especially those between the ages of five and eight, responded best to the treatment.

One of the participants, a seven-year-old girl, quickly recovered almost all her hearing and was able to hold daily conversations with her mother four months afterward. However, the therapy also proved effective in adults.

“Smaller studies in China have previously shown positive results in children, but this is the first time that the method has been tested in teenagers and adults, too,” Duan said.

“Hearing was greatly improved in many of the participants, which can have a profound effect on their life quality. We will now be following these patients to see how lasting the effect is,” the expert said.

Importantly, the results also show that the treatment was safe and well-tolerated.

Hamas signals readiness for ceasefire talks as new proposal gains momentum

Lack of essentials in Gaza leads to increase in preventable diseases: UN

New Delhi, July 05: Hamas announced that it had submitted a positive response to a new 60-day ceasefire proposal, raising hopes for a breakthrough in efforts to halt the conflict in Gaza, reports CNN. The move comes after months of stalled negotiations and follows Israel’s earlier acceptance of the US-backed framework.

The latest proposal, presented by Qatar with support from the Trump administration, outlines a phased cessation of hostilities and includes provisions for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. The plan reportedly calls for the release of 10 hostages, eight living and two deceased, on the first day of the truce, in exchange for an undisclosed number of Palestinian prisoners.

Subsequent releases would follow in four phases, during which Israel would also withdraw from parts of northern Gaza.

Both sides are now expected to enter final proximity talks, with negotiators shuttling messages between representatives in the same location. A key issue under discussion is the timeline and scope of Israeli military withdrawal during the truce reports CNN.

In addition, the proposal commits Israel to facilitating a significant increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza through established international channels, rather than the Israeli-controlled Gaza.

Humanitarian Foundation, which had drawn criticism. Qatar, which has long served as a mediator, re-engaged both parties in an attempt to bridge remaining gaps.

The original version of the ceasefire framework had collapsed in March after Hamas rejected it for lacking assurances about a permanent end to hostilities. The revised proposal appears to meet more of Hamas’s demands, offering a clearer path toward a broader resolution if negotiations proceed as planned, reports CNN.

D Gukesh leads with 14 points in Grand Chess Tour after five consecutive victories

Zagreb, July 05: After three days of rapid chess, reigning World Champion D Gukesh is leading at the SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz tournament, a part of the 2025 Grand Chess Tour – in Zagreb, Croatia, scoring 14 points out of 18 before heading to the blitz portion of the tournament.

Gukesh on Friday finished at the top of the chart with 14 points, followed by Jan-Krzysztof Duda with 11 points, and Magnus Carlsen is third with 10 points.

Despite beginning day three with a victory, Carlsen was limited to two draws, maintaining his position right behind the frontrunners. With nine points apiece, Fabiano Caruana and R Praggnanandhaa are tied for fourth place. With 8 points each, Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So, and Anish Giri are all tied.

On Day 3, Gukesh shook hands after a calm draw against Dutch GM Anish Giri as they approached a nearly locked middlegame. The second game of the day, against Croatia’s Ivan Aric, also finished in a draw. In the final match of the day, after two draws, they eventually defeated Wesley to end on 14 points.

World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen made an encouraging start to the final day, defeating Fabiano Caruana in his opening game, but a subsequent draw against Nodirbek Abdusattorov put paid to his chances of closing the gap and another draw against Anish Giri in the final game of the day.

The other Indian on the court, R Praggnanandhaa, had a less exciting performance. He won once, against Ivan Saric, and tied seven of his nine matches, earning nine points overall.

Gukesh’s campaign got off to a rocky start with an early setback – a first-round loss to Jan-Krzysztof Duda. However, this only resulted in an amazing turnaround. Gukesh seized command of the leaderboard by winning five straight games, including a masterful defeat of Carlsen in Round 4.

35 injured after three buses carrying Amarnath pilgrims collide in J&K's Ramban

Srinagar, July 05: Atleast thirty-five Amarnath pilgrims were injured after three buses lost control and collided with each other at Chanderkot in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, officials said on Saturday.

Medical Superintendent District Hospital Ramban, Sudarshan Singh Katoch said, “35 pilgrims with minor injuries/bruises have been brought to district hospital Ramban.”

Confirming that all the pilgrims are in stable condition, he said, “Pilgrims have been given first aid and are normal now.”

Taking cognizance of the incident, senior officials from the police and district administration immediately rushed to the spot.

In this regard, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) urged the public not to panic over the news.

Meanwhile, the Amarnath Yatra via the Pahalgam route continued without any delay, officials added.

Over 26,800 perform Amarnath Yatra in 2 days, another batch of 6,979 leave for Valley

Srinagar, July 05: Another batch of 6,979 Yatris left Jammu on Saturday for Kashmir amid tight security arrangements to perform pilgrimage to the Amarnath shrine as more than 26,800 pilgrims had ‘Darshan’ during the last two days, officials said.

The officials added that more than 26,800 pilgrims had ‘darshan’ inside the holy cave shrine cave during the last two days since the 38-day-long Amarnath Yatra started on July 3.

“Another batch of 6,979 pilgrims left Bhagwati Nagar Yatra Niwas in the morning in two escorted convoys of 312 vehicles for the Valley.”

“Of these, 2,753 are going to Baltal base camp while 4,226 pilgrims are going to Nunwan (Pahalgam base camp),” officials added.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, inaugurated a Yatri Niwas in Baltal base camp on Friday.

The complex includes a disaster management centre.

Part of the ONGC’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) project, Baltal Yatri Niwas has become functional while those in Bijbehara, Nunwan (Pahalgam) and Sidhra in Jammu are nearing completion.

These locations feature dormitories, sewage treatment plants, and other essential utilities.

The Sidhra site (8,500 square metres), designed as a sustainable G+5 structure equipped with solar panels, is expected to be operational by September 2026.

Collectively, these projects, covering over 30,955 square metres, will provide safer and more comfortable facilities for the people.

Authorities have left no stone unturned in providing a multi-tier cover to this year’s Amarnath Yatra, as this takes place after the cowardly attack of April 22 in which Pakistan-backed terrorists killed 26 civilians after segregating them on the basis of faith in Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam.

An additional 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces have been brought in to augment the existing strength of the Army, Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Sashastra Seema Bal, and the local police.

All the transit camps en route to the two base camps and the entire route from Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu to the cave shrine are secured by the security forces.

Locals have extended complete cooperation to this year’s Amarnath Yatra as they have always done in the past.

To send out a powerful signal that Kashmiris were deeply shocked by the Pahalgam terror attack, locals were the first to welcome the first batch of Yatris with garlands and placards as the pilgrims crossed the Navyug Tunnel to enter the Valley at Qazigund.

This year, the Yatra started on July 3 and will end after 38 days on August 9, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.

Yatris approach the holy cave shrine situated 3,888 metres above sea level in the Kashmir Himalayas either from the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route.

Those using the Pahalgam route have to pass through Chandanwari, Sheshnag and Panchtarni to reach the cave shrine, covering a distance of 46 km on foot.

This trek takes a pilgrim four days to reach the cave shrine.

Those using the shorter Baltal route have to trek 14 km to reach the cave shrine and return to the base camp the same day after performing the Yatra.

For security reasons, no helicopter services are available to the Yatris this year.

The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon.

Devotees believe that the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

Shri Amarnath ji Yatra is one of the holiest religious pilgrimages for the devotees, as legend says Lord Shiva narrated the secrets of eternal life and immortality to Mata Parvati inside this cave.

Two pigeons accidentally happened to be inside the cave when the eternal secrets were being narrated by Lord Shiva.

Traditionally, even to this day, a pair of mountain pigeons flies out of the cave shrine when the annual Yatra begins.

PM Modi arrives in Argentina, first bilateral visit by an Indian PM in 57 years

Buenos Aires, July 05: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Friday evening, on a two-day visit of his five-nation tour, that aims to reinforce India’s engagements with the Global South and focus on strengthening ties with the South American country. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome upon his arrival at the Ezeiza International Airport.

This is the first bilateral visit to the South American country by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years and is thus historic.

“Landed in Buenos Aires for a bilateral visit which will focus on augmenting relations with Argentina. I’m eager to be meeting President Javier Milei and holding detailed talks with him,” PM Modi wrote in a post on his official X account.

“Celebrating the enduring friendship between our nations. PM @narendramodi has landed in the vibrant city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, on an Official Visit. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome on arrival at the airport. This is the first bilateral visit by an Indian PM to Argentina in 57 years, marking a new chapter in India-Argentina ties,” Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on social media platform X.

He has already visited Ghana and Trinidad & Tobago –- both highly successful visits.

Prime Minister Modi will be in Argentina on July 4 and 5, on the invitation of President Javier Milei.

The last meeting between the two leaders was in November 2024, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

While Prime Minister Modi has previously been to Argentina in 2018 to attend the G20 Summit.

In his departure statement before embarking on the ongoing five-nation visit, the Prime Minister had called Argentina – a key economic partner in Latin America and a close collaborator in G20.

The two countries share cohesive and strong relations spread across a wide spectrum of sectors and deepened over decades.

The ties were elevated to the level of Strategic Partnership in 2019 and the two countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2024.

The people-to-people connect between the two nations is also strong with Yoga, Ayurveda and Indian philosophy being fairly popular.

As per the programme, Prime Minister Modi will be paying respects at the statue of General Jose de San Martin, Argentina’s revered freedom fighter and national hero.

The Prime Minister will be accorded a ceremonial welcome; he will hold the delegation talks, followed by a lunch hosted by President Milei for him.

The visit is expected to further strengthen the strategic partnership and open new avenues of cooperation. These include trade and investment, health and pharmaceuticals, defence and security infrastructure, mining and mineral resources, agriculture and food security, green energy, ICT, digital innovation, disaster management, science and technology, education and people-to-people linkages.

The Prime Minister’s visit at a particularly significant time as Argentina is undertaking major economic reforms — somewhat similar to those undertaken in India in the past.

India’s advancements in sectors like defence manufacturing, space, information technology and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) can benefit Argentina.

India’s expertise in Telemedicine and Digital healthcare solutions can also offer Argentina a way to deliver affordable and quality healthcare access.

Argentina holds the world’s second largest shale gas reserves and the fourth largest shale oil reserves along with of course substantial conventional oil and gas deposits, making it a potentially important energy partner for India in the future.

Argentina’s rich reserves of critical minerals such as lithium, copper and other rare earth elements complement India’s growing need for secure and sustainable supplies to these elements for its clean energy transition and industrial growth. Along with Bolivia and Chile, Argentina forms the Lithium Triangle.

Lithium is crucial for modern technology, primarily due to its role in rechargeable batteries. It’s a key component in powering electric vehicles, portable electronics like phones and laptops, and energy storage systems for renewable energy sources. Towards this, Indian companies like public sector players Khanij Bidesh India Ltd and Coal India Ltd. have obtained certain concessions–in the Catamarca province of Argentina.

The two leaders will be discussing the partnership in this sector when they meet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already made successful visits to Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago as part of the ongoing programme and after Argentina, he will head to Brazil where he will participate in the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro before undertaking a bilateral visit to Brasilia. He will then proceed to Namibia — the last stop in this visit.

R S Pathania seeks time bound completion of JJM projects

Udhampur, Jul 4: MLA Udhampur East R S Pathania has emphasised the need for the holistic and time-bound completion of all projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

Reiterating the government’s commitment, Pathania said that providing clean, potable water to every household was a national priority and a core resolution of the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Pathania stated this while interacting with the public and officials during a series of ‘Janata Darbars’ at Panchayat Ghar Seen Brahmana; Neelam Palace Manwal and Battal Balian on Friday.

The interactions were aimed at making efforts to ensure equitable access to safe drinking water and strengthen local infrastructure.

Pathania said that thousands of crores were allocated to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir under JJM and it was the collective responsibility of the administration and implementing agencies to ensure that these funds were used efficiently, transparently, and for the benefit of the people.

During an on-spot inspection of the Water Supply Scheme at Seen Brahmana, Pathania reviewed the primary water source and issued strict directions to prevent contamination from outflows originating near the cremation ground. He instructed the immediate restoration of a defunct tubewell constructed nearly two decades ago and called for the development of an additional borewell to meet the increasing drinking water demands of the local population.

BJP MLA also stressed that the scheme must be completed within a defined timeframe to avoid delays.

Pathania further raised the long-pending issue of water being sourced from Jhajjar Nallah and called for a rationalized solution. Expressing concern over the substandard execution of the Water Supply Scheme in Dhamma, where newly constructed filtration tanks began falling apart within months, he ordered immediate action against the responsible contractor.

He also directed the rectification of faulty underground pipelines and failing gravity-based rural water schemes (GRS), citing that quality, timely delivery, and accountability must be upheld as guiding principles in all government projects.

These, he said, were the hallmarks of the Modi government and must be emulated in the Union Territory by all officers and contractors involved in development works.

During the public meetings, Pathania announced funds for the construction of a community shed near Shiv Mandir in Sodan and also announced a Common Facility Centre (CFC) at Seen Brahmana to facilitate public meetings and local gatherings.

At Manwal, he directed the Department of Agriculture to ensure early completion of mushroom sheds and polyhouses.

He also reviewed the status of the Baryalta-Satrari JJM Scheme, in Bhatti Barigarh water supply and instructed that borewells in the region be connected to the main distribution network to resolve ongoing water scarcity issues. He took serious note of the out-of-order handpumps and instructed the concerned officials to ensure their immediate repair.

With the onset of the rainy season, Pathania emphasised the need for a proactive and modern approach by the Public Works Department to unclog blocked roads and maintain road connectivity. He expressed deep concern over the dysfunctional state of irrigation canals and stressed that these must be restored on a priority basis to support paddy cultivation and protect the livelihood of farmers.

Envisioning a brighter and more sustainable future for his constituency, Pathania reiterated his commitment to transforming Udhampur East into a model constituency in terms of water supply, road connectivity, healthcare, and education. He stressed that there must be continuous appraisal and upgradation of grassroots-level facilities and that the people’s aspirations must be met with sincerity, efficiency, and determination.
