Lack of essentials in Gaza leads to increase in preventable diseases: UN

Lack of essentials in Gaza leads to increase in preventable diseases: UN

United Nations, June 27: UN humanitarians said that its partners delivering health aid in Gaza reported a spike in preventable diseases linked to a lack of clean water, sanitation and fuel.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that in the last two weeks, more than 19,000 cases of acute watery diarrhea were recorded, alongside more than 200 cases each of acute jaundice syndrome and bloody diarrhea, Xinhua news agency reported.

“These outbreaks are directly linked to the lack of clean water and sanitation in Gaza, underscoring the urgent need for fuel, medical supplies, and water, sanitation and hygiene items to prevent further collapse of the public health system,” the humanitarians said.

The partners also reported yet another mass casualty incident for Al Aqsa Hospital following an airstrike in Deir al-Balah.

They said the hospital received more than 20 people killed and 70 others injured. Additional wounded patients had to be transferred to Nasser Medical Complex and two other health facilities.

“Civilians in Gaza continue to be killed or injured daily, whether in Israeli airstrikes, shelling, or while trying to find food for their families,” said OCHA. “These tragic events must not be normalized and must come to an immediate end.”

On a more positive note, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported delivering its first medical shipment into Gaza since March 2, when Israel imposed a full blockade on the strip. Nine trucks carrying essential medical supplies, 2,000 units of blood, and 1,500 units of plasma were transported from the Kerem Shalom/Karem Abu Salem border crossing.

The WHO said the supplies were being distributed to priority hospitals. The blood and plasma were delivered to the cold storage facility at Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, to be distributed to hospitals facing critical shortages amid a growing influx of injuries, many linked to incidents at the non-UN, militarized food distribution sites run by the US.

The WHO said the shipment of the badly needed medical supplies is only a drop in the ocean.

OCHA said that to meet humanitarian needs and help reduce looting, it is essential to increase the flow of humanitarian and essential commercial goods into Gaza through multiple crossings and routes and facilitate their safe distribution across the strip.

The office said that on Wednesday, six out of 17 attempts to coordinate humanitarian movements inside Gaza were rejected outright by the Israeli authorities. The planned UN missions included trucking water and repairing roads. Nine other coordination attempts, including the removal of solid waste and collection of cargo from the crossings, were facilitated by the Israeli authorities. Two additional attempts were not made.

“The continued restrictions on humanitarian access are severely undermining life-saving operations,” the office said.

OCHA said it is gravely concerned about escalating violence and Israeli settler attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank.

The office said it documented an attack where three Palestinians were killed and several others injured when hundreds of settlers, some armed and accompanied by Israeli forces, raided the village of Kafr Malik and set fire to occupied homes on Wednesday. The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics in the Ramallah governorate reported that Kafr Malik has a population exceeding 3,000.

OCHA said that in another attack on Wednesday, about 20 settlers set fire to farmland in Asira al Qibliya village in Nablus governorate.

“Civilians continue to bear the brunt of this prolonged Israeli occupation,” the office said of violence in Gaza and the West Bank. “OCHA reiterates its call for the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel, full respect for international law, and unfettered humanitarian access.”

MEA on China-Pakistan-Bangladesh trilateral meeting

"We maintain constant watch": MEA on China-Pakistan-Bangladesh trilateral meeting

New Delhi, June 27: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that it is keeping a constant watch on developments in India’s neighbourhood, especially in light of the recent trilateral meeting involving China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Speaking at a press briefing, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We maintain a constant watch on the developments in our neighbourhood that have a bearing on our interests and our security, our relations with individual countries, while they stand on their own footing, take into account the evolving context as well.”

The meeting held on June 19 in Yunnan, China, took place on the sidelines of the 9th China-South Asia Exposition and the 6th China-South Asia Cooperation Forum. It was attended by Bangladesh’s acting foreign secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, and Pakistan’s Additional Secretary (Asia Pacific) Imran Ahmed Siddiqui. Pakistan’s foreign secretary to China, Amna Baloch, participated via video link, as reported by Daily Star.

As reported by The Daily Star, Bangladesh called it an “informal meeting”, Pakistan termed it as “the inaugural meeting of the trilateral mechanism”.

In their statements, China and Pakistan stated that the three sides agreed to explore and implement cooperation projects in areas such as trade, maritime affairs, climate change, agriculture, human resources, education, and culture.

When asked about India’s recent restriction imposed on trade with Bangladesh, the MEA spokesperson said that the decisions were based on “Bangladesh’s own quest for fairness, equal treatment and reciprocity.”

“The trade-related amendments announced by India in respect of Bangladesh were based on Bangladesh’s own quest for fairness, equal treatment and reciprocity. We await resolution of the underlying issues pending with the Bangladeshi side for a long time, these issues have been raised by India at several structured meetings earlier, including at the Commerce Secretary level talks,” Jaiswal said.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry imposed restrictions on imports from Bangladesh through land ports after Bangladesh imposed import restrictions on Indian staples like yarn and rice.
According to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), India’s restrictions on imports from Bangladesh via land ports will impact goods worth USD 770 million, accounting for nearly 42 per cent of total bilateral imports.

The move limits the entry of products such as ready-made garments and processed foods to specific seaports, an official press release by the Ministry stated and is widely viewed as a response to Bangladesh’s recent curbs on Indian yarn, rice, and other goods, along with its decision to impose a transit fee on Indian cargo, marking a shift from previously cooperative trade relations.

Under the new directive, all kinds of ready-made garments from Bangladesh can now only be imported through Nhava Sheva and Kolkata seaports, with entry through land ports no longer permitted.

Iran says no agreement made to resume US talks

Iran Foreign Minister Araghchi to visit India on May 7-8, hold talks with EAM Jaishankar

Tehran, June 27: Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said that no arrangement or commitment had been made to resume negotiations with the United States, amid heightened tensions following attacks by Israel and the United States on Iranian territory.

In an interview with state broadcaster IRIB, Araghchi said on Thursday that the possibility of restarting talks was under consideration but would depend on whether Tehran’s national interests were protected, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Our decisions will be based solely on Iran’s interests,” he said. “If our interests require a return to negotiations, we will consider it. But at this stage, no agreement or promise has been made and no talks have taken place.”

Araghchi accused Washington of betraying Iran during previous rounds of negotiations on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal and lifting US sanctions.

The Iranian diplomat also confirmed that a law suspending cooperation with the United Nations nuclear watchdog had become binding after being passed by parliament and approved by the Guardian Council, a top constitutional oversight body.

“The law is now obligatory and will be implemented. Our cooperation with the IAEA will take a new shape,” he said.

Araghchi also said the damage caused by the 12-day war with Israel was “serious” and that experts from the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran were conducting a detailed assessment. He said the question of demanding reparations was high on the government’s agenda.

The conflict began on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on multiple targets across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, killing several senior commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians. The attacks came just days before Iran and the United States were expected to resume indirect nuclear negotiations in Muscat, Oman, on June 15.

In response, Iran launched waves of missile and drone strikes on Israel, causing casualties and damage.

On Saturday, the US Air Force struck three key Iranian nuclear sites. In retaliation, Iran fired missiles at the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday.

The 12-day conflict ended with a ceasefire between Iran and Israel on Tuesday.

Terrorists trapped in Basantgarh under watch for last 1 year: IGP Jammu

Jammu, June 26: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu zone Bhim Sen Tuti Thursday stated that the movement of a group of terrorists trapped in Bihali forests of Basantgarh in Udhampur district was being monitored for the past one year and finally contact was established with them on June 26.

In the morning, contact was established with the terrorists at around 8.30 am. They are believed to be four in number. We had been tracking this group for the last one year. Today we were finally able to establish contact. Searches were being conducted amid inclement weather conditions. Weather was pretty bad there. Once dense foggy cover reduces, the situation will be clearer,î IGP stated, while responding to media queries after flagging a drug awareness vehicle.

Responding to queries about upcoming Amarnath Yatra, he said that security deployment was bolstered to an unprecedented level to ensure fool-proof security for it (pilgrimage) and 180 companies of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces were deployed in 2025, upscaling number as compared to 2024.

ìYesterday we conducted a special mock drill. Foolproof security arrangements have been made in all the five districts that complete the Amarnath Yatra circuit. All para military forces have arrived here and deployment too has been completed. This time we have deployed 180 companies of para military forces, 30 companies more than as compared to last year,î IGP Jammu informed.

With regard to the challenge being posed by narco-terrorism, he said, ìBeing a border state, narco terrorism has emerged as a big challenge for Jammu and Kashmir. We are fighting not only against terrorism but also against terror-funding routed through narcoticsí trade. We are engaged in a determined fight against this challenge.î

He also appealed to the pilgrims, who will embark on pilgrimage from Jammu, to join the official convoy and move independently. In this connection, an advisory was also issued.

Earlier, on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, IGP Tuti flagged off a drug awareness vehicle. The initiative, led by Jammu Police and district administration, aims to combat drug abuse through widespread public awareness campaigns across the region.

ìThe vehicle will tour city and rural areas, educating people about the dangers of drug addiction, legal consequences, and available rehabilitation services. Interactive sessions, pamphlets, and digital displays will be used to engage communities, with a focus on youth prevention,î IGP Jammu said. He emphasized the need for a united effort between law enforcement and citizens to eradicate the drug menace.

DIG Jammu stressed the importance of community involvement, while SSP Jammu called for parents and teachers to stay vigilant. ADC Jammu reaffirmed the administrationís commitment to expanding de-addiction centres and counseling programmes.

The campaign aligns with the national mission for a drug-free India, promoting healthy lifestyles and alternative activities like sports and arts to deter substance abuse.

DIG Armed, Vinod Kumar; DIG JKS Range, Shiv Kumar Sharma; SSP Jammu, Joginder Singh; ADC Jammu, Ansuya Jamwal; SSP ANTF J&K, Mohd Anwar-ul-Haq; SP Hqrs, Irshad Rather and SP Ops Jammu, Kameshwar Puri were also present on the occasion.

DRI seizes Pakistan-origin goods worth Rs 9 crore under ‘Operation Deep Manifest’

JMC raids warehouse in Jammu, seizes 40 metric tonnes of polythene

New Delhi, Jun 26: In a significant enforcement action, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized goods worth Rs 9 crore under ‘Operation Deep Manifest’, targeting illegal imports of Pakistani-origin goods routed through Dubai.

The operation has thus far led to the seizure of 39 containers carrying 1,115 metric tonnes of goods in blatant violation of import policy conditions and prohibitions imposed by the government on direct or indirect import or transit of Pakistani-origin goods, the finance ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

One of the partners of an importing firm was arrested on Thursday, it added.

Following the Pahalgam terror attacks, the government imposed a comprehensive ban, effective May 2, 2025, on the direct or indirect import or transit of goods originating in or exported from Pakistan.

Previously, such goods were subject to 200 per cent customs duty. Despite these stringent measures, some importers attempt to bypass the government policy by misdeclaring the origin of goods and manipulating the related shipping documents, the ministry said.

“In two separate cases, these consignments were seized at Nhava Sheva port. The consignments were falsely declared as UAE-origin, masking their Pakistani origin. However, investigations revealed that these goods actually originated from Pakistan and were merely transshipped via Dubai for import into India,” it noted.

Investigations revealed that the goods were initially transported from Pakistan to Dubai on one set of containers and vessels and subsequently transferred to another set of containers and vessels bound for India, it said.

Further examination of goods and analysis of documents gathered during investigations conducted so far uncovered cargo movement trails from Karachi port, Pakistan, and transshipments at Jabel Ali port, Dubai, en route to Indian ports, the statement said.

Furthermore, it said, money transfers/financial linkages with Pakistani entities were traced, raising serious concerns about illicit financial flows.

Kashmir’s IPL-style cricket league kicks off

Srinagar, Jun 26: Amid unprecedented fanfare, with thousands of spectators thronging the venue in what is being described as Kashmir’s very own IPL, the Alson Kashmir Cup 2025 kicked off on Thursday here at TRC ground in Srinagar.

The opening day of the tournament with two fixtures witnessed an overwhelming crowd, estimated at over 10,000 people, who packed the ground, specially in the second fixture, an unexpected turnout that left even the organisers surprised.

“This tournament truly deserves to be called Kashmir’s IPL,” said Dr Touseef Ahmad, one of the patrons and mentors of the organising body, Dalgate Sports Club.

“From the auction format to the playing pattern, everything has been designed to mirror the IPL. Our goal is to give local youngsters the feel of what it is like to be part of a big league.”

The tournament format follows a full-fledged IPL model with 10 top cricketing teams from across the region playing 25 matches over 12 days. It includes eliminators, a structured points system, and knockout stages. However, weather conditions may play a role in final scheduling.

Dr Touseef said that they have also introduced several technical upgrades to enhance the professionalism of the tournament. “Except for DRS, we have deployed almost every technology available — including a third umpire mechanism and fixed cameras around the ground for better transparency in match decisions,” Dr Touseef said.

Dr Touseef added that a significant development this year is the transition from matting to turf wicket, a move made possible with the support of the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council. “We were told that real cricket must be played on turf, and this year we have made it happen. In fact, over 180 runs were chased down in the very first match, which is a great sign of competitive cricket,” said Dr Touseef.

Emraan Bhatt, one of the brains behind the league, said that this edition also includes a notable focus on youth participation, with under-19 players draughted into playing XIs alongside seasoned stars like Parvez Rasool and Ahmad Banday. “We want to give young boys a platform where they can begin to dream of playing in the IPL or on national stages,” he said.

Dr Touseef said that the league was founded with a mission to fight drug abuse through sports and that Dalgate Sports Club sees this tournament as more than just a cricket league. “It is about uniting people and inspiring the youth. If even a few young boys are steered away from drugs because of this, then our dream is coming true,” Dr Touseef said.

As per the cricket observers in the region, this cricket league edition is expected to dominate the valley’s sporting landscape in the days ahead, stating that it appears no less than a celebration.
