New Delhi, Jun 26: India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has begun the critical analysis of the black boxes recovered from the wreckage of Air India Flight AI-171, which crashed earlier this month. The Civil Aviation Ministry confirmed that all investigation steps are being carried out as per international norms laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). As a signatory to the ICAO’s 1944 Chicago Convention, India investigates aircraft accidents in line with ICAO’s Annex 13 and under the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2017.

The AAIB, designated as the national investigating authority, initiated the probe into the AI-171 crash immediately following the accident.

A multidisciplinary investigation team was constituted on June 13, 2025. Led by the Director General of the AAIB, the team includes an aviation medicine specialist, an air traffic control (ATC) officer, and representatives from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)—the investigative body of the aircraft’s country of manufacture and design.

Kashmir Trade Alliance raises alarm over business slump

Srinagar, June 26: The Kashmir Trade Alliance (KTA) on Thursday extended a warm welcome to the commencement of the annual Amarnath Yatra, which is scheduled to begin from July 3.

In a statement issued to the press, Aijaz Shahdhar, President of KTA, said that the people of Kashmir have always upheld the centuries-old tradition of communal harmony and brotherhood. “The Amarnath Yatra is a symbol of our composite culture, and we welcome the pilgrims with open hearts, as we have done for decades,” Shahdhar said.

He further added that this year’s yatra assumes added significance as it is expected to revive economic activity in the Valley, especially in the wake of the recent setback following the April incident in Pahalgam. “Tourism and pilgrim flow are vital for the livelihood of thousands of people associated with the hospitality, transport, trade and allied sectors,” he noted.

The KTA also urged the administration to ensure that all necessary arrangements are put in place for the smooth conduct of the yatra, including adequate security, medical facilities, and road connectivity, so that the pilgrimage proceeds in a safe and peaceful manner.

“We are hopeful that this year’s yatra will be successful and will help restore confidence and normalcy in the region,” Shahdhar said.

Srinagar, June 26: Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK) on Thursday warned private schools for forcing teachers and students to attend schools during ongoing summer break, and clarified that action as per law will be taken if such practice was not stopped immediately.

“It has come to the notice of this Directorate that some private schools are asking the students and teachers to attend school during the ongoing summer vacation period on one or the other pretext”.

“This practice is a serious violation of established norms and guidelines, and it undermines the very purpose of these essential breaks,” reads a circular issued by DSEK, adding “Therefore, in view of the above, all recognised private schools are hereby directed to ensure that no student or teacher shall be compelled to attend school or participate in any academic or extra-curricular activities during the officially declared summer vacation period”.

“Any deviation from these circular instructions shall be viewed seriously and invite action as per law on the subject,” the circular added.

Gold climbs Rs 1,400 to Rs 96,450 per 10 g; silver jumps Rs 1,000

New Delhi, June 26: Gold prices stayed flat at Rs 98,600 per 10 grams in the national capital on Thursday, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The precious metal of 99.5 per cent purity also remained flat at Rs 98,050 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes).

Silver prices also traded steady at Rs 1,03,100 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Thursday.

On the global front, spot gold went up marginally to USD 3,334.41 per ounce.

“Gold saw a modest gain on Thursday, buoyed by bargain buyers and a weaker US dollar. The US dollar index fell below 97.0, marking its lowest level since March 2022.

“This decline was triggered by disappointing US economic data, concerns about the country and economic health, and rising speculation about potential rate cuts. Additionally, growing fiscal concerns also weighed on the US dollar while lending support for precious metals,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

Meanwhile, gold traders seem to have digested news regarding a multi-stage ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Attention now shifts to trade deals related developments, and upcoming US economic data, which are expected to influence bullion and US dollar trends in the upcoming days, Gandhi said.

Market participants are closely monitoring US macroeconomic data, including the US GDP, durable goods orders, and initial jobless claims, to gain further insights into the health of the American economy, he added.

Iran’s supreme leader warns against further American attacks in his first statement since ceasefire

Khamenei declares 'battle has begun' as Iran fires hypersonic missile at Israel

Dubai, June 26: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Thursday his country had delivered a “slap to America’s face” with its strike on an American base in Qatar, and warned against any further US attacks in his first public comments since a ceasefire was declared with Israel after 12 days of war.

Khamenei spoke in a recorded video broadcast on Iranian state television, his first appearance since June 19. The 86-year-old looked and sounded more tired than he did only a week ago, speaking in a hoarse voice and occasionally stumbling over his words.

The more-than 10 minute speech by the supreme leader was filled with warnings and threats directed toward the United States and Israel.

He downplayed Sunday’s US strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites using bunker-buster bombs and cruise missiles, saying that US President Donald Trump — who said the attack “completely and fully obliterated Iran’s nuclear programme — had “exaggerated” its impact.

“They could not achieve anything significant,” he said.

UN nuclear watchdog confirms damage to Iran sites

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog, International Atomic Energy Agency Director Rafael Grossi, reiterated on Thursday that the damage done by Israeli and US strikes at Iranian nuclear facilities “is very, very, very considerable.”

“I think annihilated is too much but it suffered enormous damage,” Grossi told French broadcaster RFI.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, on Wednesday also conceded that “our nuclear installations have been badly damaged, that’s for sure.”

Khamenei has not been seen in public since taking shelter in a secret location after the outbreak of the war June 13 when Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities and targeted top military commanders and scientists.

Following Sunday’s US attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Trump was able to help negotiate a ceasefire that came into effect on Tuesday.

Iranian leader warns US against further attacks

Khamenei claimed the US had only intervened in the war because “it felt that if it did not intervene, the Zionist regime would be utterly destroyed.”

“It entered the war to save them, yet it gained nothing,” he said.

He said his country’s attack on the US base in Qatar on Monday was significant, since it shows Iran “has access to important US centres in the region and can act against them whenever it deems necessary.”

“The Islamic Republic was victorious and, in retaliation, delivered a hand slap to America’s face,” he said, adding “this action can be repeated in the future.”

“Should any aggression occur, the enemy will definitely pay a heavy price,” he said.

Since the ceasefire, life has been gradually returning to normal in Iran.

On Thursday, Iran partially reopened its airspace, which had been shut down since the war broke out, and shops in the capital of Tehran began to reopen, with traffic returning to the streets.

With the ceasefire, life slowly returns to normal in Iran

Majid Akhavan, spokesperson for the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, said Iran had reopened the airspace for the eastern half of the country to domestic and international flights, including those transiting Iranian airspace.

Earlier this week, Tehran said 606 people had been killed in the conflict in Iran, with 5,332 people wounded. The Washington-based Human Rights Activists group released figures Wednesday suggesting Israeli strikes on Iran had killed at least 1,054 and wounded 4,476.

The group, which has provided detailed casualty figures from multiple rounds of unrest in Iran, said 417 of those killed were civilians and 318 were security forces.

At least 28 people were killed in Israel and more than 1,000 wounded, according to officials there.

During the 12-day war, Iran fired more than 550 missiles at Israel with a 90 per cent interception rate, according to new statistics released by Israeli authorities on Thursday. Israel, meantime, hit more than 720 Iranian military infrastructure targets and eight nuclear-related sites, Israel said.

Trump has also asserted that American and Iranian officials will talk next week, giving rise to cautious hope for longer-term peace.

Iran has not acknowledged any such talks would take place, though US Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff has said there has been direct and indirect communication between the countries. A sixth round of US-Iran negotiations was scheduled for earlier this month in Oman but was cancelled after Israel attacked Iran on June 13.

Iran has insisted that it will not give up its nuclear programme. In a vote underscoring the tough path ahead, its parliament agreed Wednesday to fast-track a proposal that would effectively stop the country’s cooperation with the IAEA, which has monitored the programme for years.
