Waheed Para slams govt over vacant posts as Kashmir reels under irrigation crisis

'Not a law-abiding citizen': NIA opposes relaxation of bail conditions for PDP leader Waheed Para

Srinagar, June 25: As Kashmir reels under what experts describe as the worst irrigation crisis in a century, PDP leader Waheed-ur-Rehman Para has sharply criticized the Jammu and Kashmir government for what he said failing to respond to the unfolding agricultural emergency.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Para questioned why crucial positions in the Irrigation Department, including that of Chief Engineer Kashmir, other Chief Engineers (CEs), and Executive Engineers (XENs), continue to remain vacant even as large parts of the Valley face dry canals, failed pumping stations, and defunct irrigation schemes.

“The Irrigation Department is paralyzed. Why are key posts like Chief Engineer Kashmir, CEs, and XENs still vacant? Why can’t Hon’ble CM @OmarAbdullah fill this vacuum that’s fueling the disaster?” Para posted, tagging both the Chief Minister’s handle and the official handle of the J&K government. “Why sit on files while a crisis looms overhead?” he added.

Farmers across multiple districts, especially in south and central Kashmir, have reported failing paddy fields due to lack of water. Many irrigation canals are running dry, and several lift irrigation and tube well schemes are lying defunct due to poor maintenance and staff shortage.

Explosive kills 7 Israeli soldiers in Gaza inside armoured vehicle: military

Jerusalem, June 25: Seven Israeli soldiers were killed on Tuesday in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis when their armoured vehicle was struck by an explosive, an Israeli military official said on Wednesday.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in line with military regulations, said six of the soldiers’ names had been cleared for publication, while one was still being kept confidential.

It was a particularly deadly incident for Israel’s military inside Gaza. Over 860 Israeli soldiers have been killed since the the war began with the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack — including more than 400 during the fighting inside Gaza.

Also in the area of Khan Younis area, one soldier was seriously wounded Tuesday by weapons fire, the military said.

Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing, said on its Telegram channel it had ambushed Israeli soldiers taking cover inside a residential building in southern Gaza Strip.

Some of the soldiers were killed and other injured after they were targeted by a Yassin 105 missile and another missile south Khan Younis, Hamas said. Al-Qassam fighters then targeted the building with machine guns.

It was not immediately clear whether the two incidents were the same.

The deadly attack came as the Palestinian death toll inside Gaza crossed the 56,000 mark.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said Tuesday that Israel’s 21-month military operation in Gaza has killed 56,077 people.

Hamas in its 2023 attack on southern Israel killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 others hostage. Many hostages have been released by ceasefire or other agreements.

The death toll is by far the highest in any round of Israeli-Palestinian fighting. The ministry doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants but says more than half of the dead were women and children.

The ministry said the dead include 5,759 who have been killed since Israel resumed fighting on March 18, shattering a two-month ceasefire.

Israel says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas, which operates in heavily populated areas. Israel says over 20,000 Hamas militants have been killed, though it has provided no evidence to support that claim. Hamas has not commented on its casualties.

Also Wednesday, Israeli police said they were investigating the death of a woman from east Jerusalem who was pronounced dead at a checkpoint after arriving with “serious penetrating injuries”.

Israel captured east Jerusalem, including the Old City and its holy sites sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, in the 1967 Mideast war in a move not internationally recognised. Palestinians want an independent state with east Jerusalem as its capital.

Indian-American Zohran Mamdani declares victory in NYC’s Democratic mayoral primary

Indian-American Zohran Mamdani declares victory in NYC's Democratic mayoral primary

New York, Jun 25: Indian-origin lawmaker Zohran Kwame Mamdani stunned in the Democratic primary race for New York City mayor, upsetting former governor Andrew Cuomo.

Mamdani, a state assemblyman from Queens and the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, declared victory in the Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday night.

“In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it’s done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honoured to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City,” Mamdani said in a post on X.

US Senator Bernie Sanders congratulated Mamdani and his thousands of grassroots supporters for their “extraordinary campaign”.

“You took on the political, economic and media Establishment – and you beat them. Now it’s on to victory in the general election.”

“My friends, we have done it. I will be your Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City. We have won from Harlem to Bay Ridge,” a report in the New York Times quoted Mamdani as saying at a victory party in Queens.

As Cuomo conceded the race, he said: “Tonight was not our night. Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won.”

Mamdani, a democratic socialist running for Mayor, was born in Uganda and raised in New York City.

His website says he fought for the working class in and outside the legislature and his efforts include hunger striking alongside taxi drivers to achieve more than USD 450 million in transformative debt relief, winning over USD 100 million in the state budget for increased subway service and a successful fare-free bus pilot, and organising New Yorkers to defeat a proposed dirty power plant.

“The cost of living is crushing working people, but Zohran believes that government can lower costs and make life easier in our city — he’ll use every tool available to bring down the rent, create world-class public transit, and make it easier to raise a family,” his website said.

Mamdani has vowed that as Mayor, he will immediately freeze the rent for all stabilised tenants, and use every available resource to build the housing New Yorkers need and bring down the rent.

Promising fast, fare-free buses, his campaign said that as Mayor, he’ll permanently eliminate the fare on every city bus – and make them faster by rapidly building priority lanes, expanding bus queue jump signals, and dedicated loading zones to keep double parkers out of the way.

Mamdani would also implement free childcare for every New Yorker aged 6 weeks to 5 years, ensuring high-quality programming for all families.

With food prices out of control, his campaign also promised that as Mayor, he would create a network of city-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices low, not making a profit.

Mandani has a plan to bring down the cost-of-living through city-owned grocery stores, universal childcare, and other bold proposals, and he knows exactly how to pay for it, too, the campaign said.

His “revenue plan will raise the corporate tax rate to match New Jersey’s 11.5 per cent, bringing in USD 5 billion. And he will tax the wealthiest 1 per cent of New Yorkers — those earning above USD 1 million annually — a flat 2 per cent tax (right now city income tax rates are essentially the same whether you make USD 50,000 or USD 50 million)”, it said adding that he will also implement common-sense procurement reform, end senseless no-bid contracts, hire more tax auditors, and crack down on fine collection from corrupt landlords to raise an additional USD 1 billion.

“New York is too expensive. Zohran will lower costs and make life easier,” his platform said.

Anti-Emergency movement was learning experience for me: PM Modi

0
Kashmir to Kanyakumari no longer a dream: PM Modi

New Delhi, Jun 25: Ahead of the release of a book on Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that the period was a learning experience for him and reaffirmed the vitality of preserving the democratic framework.

‘The Emergency Diaries – Years that Forged a Leader’, which highlights Modi’s fight for the “the ideals of democracy”, is published by BlueKraft. It will be released by Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday evening.

Modi said the book chronicles his journey during the Emergency years. It brought back many memories from that time, he said.

He said on X, “I call upon all those who remember those dark days of the Emergency or those whose families suffered during that time to share their experiences on social media. It will create awareness among the youth of the shameful time from 1975 to 1977.”

The prime minister recalled that he was a young RSS pracharak during the period.

He said, “The anti-Emergency movement was a learning experience for me. It reaffirmed the vitality of preserving our democratic framework. At the same time, I got to learn so much from people across the political spectrum.”

He added, “I am glad that BlueKraft Digital Foundation has compiled some of those experiences in the form of a book, whose foreword has been penned by Shri HD Deve Gowda Ji, himself a stalwart of the anti-Emergency movement.”

The publisher in a post said the book delves into the compelling role Modi played in the fight against the Emergency.

Based on first person anecdotes from associates who worked with Modi in his youth, and using other archival material, the book is a first of its kind that creates new scholarship on the formative years of a young man who would give it his all in the fight against tyranny, it said.

It added, “Emergency Diaries – paints a vivid picture of Narendra Modi fighting for the ideals of democracy and how he has worked all his life to preserve and promote it.” This book is a tribute to the grit and resolve of those who refused to be silenced, BlueKraft said, and it offers a rare glimpse into the early trials that forged one of the most transformative leaders of our time.

It has a foreword from former prime minister Gowda.

Jammu-Srinagar highway reopens for traffic

Srinagar, June 24: Traffic movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was halted for nearly three hours on Monday morning due to landslides and mudslides triggered by overnight rains in the Ramban district.

According to traffic officials, landslides occurred at Mehad and T2 Maroog in the Ramban sector in the early hours, blocking both sides of the strategic highway that connects the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country.

Restoration work was launched immediately, and road clearance operations were carried out despite challenging weather conditions. By 9:30 AM, the highway was cleared for traffic and stranded vehicles were allowed to move, officials confirmed.

Authorities have advised commuters to stay updated on weather and traffic advisories before embarking on the journey, as the highway remains vulnerable to frequent disruptions during the rainy season.
