Heavy rains disrupt rail traffic in Jammu region, 18 trains cancelled

Jammu, Aug 26: The Northern Railway has cancelled 18 trains to and from Katra, Udhampur and Jammu railway stations on Tuesday as relentless heavy rain wreaked havoc in the Jammu region, officials said.

The Jammu region has been experiencing its heaviest rainfall in decades since Monday night, which damaged bridges, disrupted road connectivity and inundated large tracts of land, forcing people to shift to safer areas.

The traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar and Kishtwar-Doda national highways was suspended, while dozens of hilly roads were blocked or damaged by landslides or flash floods, the officials said, adding the pilgrimage to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine was also suspended as a precautionary measure.

A railway official said, “Eighteen trains have been cancelled. Four trains have been subjected to short terminations. This has been done in view of the weather conditions prevailing in the region.”

Of the trains cancelled, seven are from Katra, the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, two from Udhampur and one from Jammu, the officials said, adding that trains to Katra and Udhampur have also been cancelled.

Train services from Pathankot to Kandrori in Himachal Pradesh have also been suspended due to heavy soil erosion and flash floods on the Chakki river, according to railway officials.

Four trains were short-terminated at Firozpur, Manda and Chak Rakhwalan, they said, adding that movement of trains on the Katra-Srinagar stretch was continuing.

Everyday bedroom items you should replace now, as per Harvard trained gastroenterologist

Srinagar, Aug 26: While your bedroom is meant to be a sanctuary, However, did you know that you could be keeping some everyday items that are highly toxic. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, MD, MPH— a board-certified gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and interventional endoscopist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford— shared an important reminder on Instagram. In his post, Dr. Sethi highlighted three common household items that could negatively affect gut health, sleep quality, and overall well-being if not replaced or used with caution.

“Did you know your bedroom might be silently affecting your gut, sleep, and long-term health? In this eye-opening video, Harvard and Stanford-trained doctor Dr. Sethi breaks down 3 common items found in most bedrooms that you should throw out ASAP,” his post read.

1. Old Pillows (over 1–2 years)
Pillows are breeding grounds for dust mites, allergens, sweat, and even fungi. Dr. Palleti Siva Karthik Reddy explains that dust mite proteins can spark allergic reactions and asthma. A study even found thousands of fungal spores per gram in used pillows—raising risks of respiratory infections and allergic response.

According to Dr. Sethi, if your pillow is older than one to two years, it could be interfering with both your sleep and respiratory health.

2. Synthetic Air Fresheners
Most artificial air fresheners release undiscussed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phthalates. Research shows that 86% of the products tested emitted phthalates—linked to respiratory issues, carcinogenic effects, and hormonal disruptions.

3. Worn Out Mattresses (older than 7–10 years)
As mattresses age, they lose their ability to support your spine properly, leading to sagging and misalignment. This can increase pressure on your back and joints, resulting in chronic pain and lower sleep quality.

By replacing pillows older than one to two years, switching out synthetic air fresheners, and upgrading mattresses older than seven years, you could significantly boost your sleep quality, reduce allergic triggers, and protect your overall well-being

PM Modi to flag off Maruti Suzuki’s first global EV, e-VITARA, in Gujarat today

New Delhi, Aug 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the Suzuki Motor Plant in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on Tuesday, where he will inaugurate the localized production of hybrid battery electrodes and launch the export of Maruti Suzuki’s first global battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e VITARA, to over 100 countries, including Japan and several European nations.

“On 26th August, at around 10:30 a.m., Prime Minister will inaugurate localized production of hybrid battery electrodes and flag-off Battery electric vehicle exports to 100 countries at Hansalpur, Ahmedabad. He will also address the gathering on the occasion,” the PMO said in a statement.

Marking a significant milestone for India’s EV and battery ecosystem, the local production of hybrid battery electrodes will begin at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant, a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki. With this development, over 80 per cent of battery value will now be manufactured domestically, furthering India’s clean energy and manufacturing goals.

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, had unveiled the e VITARA in January 2025 during the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. With an annual capacity of 2.6 million units across four Indian plants, the company exported over 3.32 lakh vehicles and sold 19.01 lakh units in the domestic market in FY25. Commercial production of the e VITARA officially begins Tuesday at the Hansalpur plant.

With this milestone, India will now serve as Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles.

These initiatives align with the government’s broader vision of making India a global hub for electric mobility, advanced manufacturing, and infrastructure development. This represents a significant step towards becoming Aatmanirbhar in the field of green energy.

In the railway sector, the Prime Minister will dedicate projects worth approximately Rs 1,400 crore, including the Rs 530 crore doubling of the 65 km Mahesana-Palanpur railway line.
