Trump warns of “great consequences” if Russia, Ukraine skip talks

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

Washington DC, August 26: US President Donald Trump on Monday (local time) warned of “great consequences” if Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fail to hold talks, while asserting that the ongoing war would not have occurred under his leadership.

On being asked if there will be consequences if the two leaders do not meet, Trump said, “… There will be great consequences… This war would have never taken place if I were President… We will see what happens over the next week or two, and at that point I will step in very strongly…”

His latest warning follows remarks made last week when Trump said that he would be taking a “very important decision” in the next two weeks on the Russia-Ukraine war, hinting at the possibility of imposing “massive sanctions or tariffs” on Moscow or telling Kyiv that “it’s not Washington’s war.”

Trump said that his decision is dependent on what happens in the next two weeks and pushed for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Speaking to the reporters at the Oval Office, Donald Trump said, “In two weeks, we are going to know which way I am going because I’m going to go one way or another. It’s going to be a very important decision. I’m going to decide whether it’s not massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both, or do we do nothing and say it’s your fight?”

“It takes two to tango. I wanted to have a meeting with those two. We’ll see if they don’t have a meeting, then why it was so, after I told them to have a meeting,” he added.

When asked about a US factory reportedly hit in Ukraine during recent Russian missile attacks, Donald Trump said, “I’m not happy about it, and I’m not happy about anything about that war. I’ve settled seven wars, and if you think about pre-wars, that’ll be three, so 10 wars. Not happy at all. Over the next two weeks we are going to find out which way it’s going to go.”

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Vladimir Putin is ready to meet Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, provided all issues relating to the settlement of the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv are thoroughly worked out.

Lavrov told RT on Thursday, “The Russian president repeatedly said that he is ready to meet, including with Zelensky, if there is an understanding that all issues that require consideration at the highest level have been worked out thoroughly” by experts and ministers.

Thousands turn up to watch day-night cricket match in south Kashmir's Pulwama

Pulwama, Aug 25: Thousands turned up to watch the first-ever day-night cricket match in this south Kashmir district, a spectacle PDP legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Para hailed as the “start of a new inning” for valley’s youngsters.

The inaugural match of the Royal Premier League is being played at Pulwama Sports Stadium between Royal Goodwill and Sultan Springs Baramulla. In total, 12 teams from across Jammu and Kashmir are participating in the tournament being played under the floodlights.

Calling it a landmark for youth engagement in the region, PDP’s Pulwama MLA Para, who was present among the spectators, described the event as the “start of a new inning” for youngsters in the valley.

“Sports can be a bridge of hope and opportunity. This is more than a match — it is a celebration of aspirations,” he told PTI.

“This is for the first time that a day and night cricket match is being played anywhere in Kashmir, especially in Pulwama. This is the start of a new inning for our youngsters who were earlier hopeless and depressed due to growing unemployment and political uncertainty,” Para said.

Referring to the jam-packed stadium, Para said the record gathering of people from across the valley for this match is a good start.

“This is a youth-led initiative, the organizers, the promoters and the players who have come from different parts of J&K. Our effort is to keep our youngsters away from drugs, pull them out of depression caused by unemployment and political uncertainty and give them new hope through such tournaments,” the PDP leader said.

He said the tournament will reach every district and “we wish the players good luck”.

The organizers said the initiative was aimed at promoting local talent and offering the valley’s youth a platform to showcase their sporting skills in a professional setting.

For many in the crowd, the match was about more than cricket — it was about reclaiming evenings with joy, hope, and togetherness under the floodlights.

Netanyahu says Israel could withdraw from Lebanon if Hezbollah is disarmed

Netanyahu defends his planned military offensive in Gaza

Jerusalem, Aug 25: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that Israeli forces could begin withdrawing from territory they hold in southern Lebanon after the Lebanese Cabinet’s “momentous decision” earlier this month to work toward the disarmament of the militant group Hezbollah by the end of 2025.

Netanyahu said if Lebanon takes the necessary steps to disarm Hezbollah, then Israel will respond with reciprocal measures, including a phased reduction of the Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon.

Since the Israel-Hezbollah war ended in November 2024 with a US-brokered ceasefire, Hezbollah officials have said the group will not discuss its disarmament until Israel withdraws from five hills it controls inside Lebanon and stops almost daily airstrikes. Those strikes have killed or wounded hundreds of people, most of them Hezbollah members.

Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri told The Associated Press in response that Israel has an obligation to comply with the ceasefire agreement, “which has not yet happened.”

“Lebanon’s position is clear. Israel must commit to the cessation of hostilities,” Mitri said, referring to Israel’s almost daily airstrikes since the ceasefire went into effect. He added that Israel should also withdraw from Lebanon and release Lebanese prisoners it is holding.

Beirut is under US pressure to disarm the group that recently fought a 14-month war with Israel and was left gravely weakened, with many of its political and military leaders dead.

The announcement comes after a visit to Israel by US envoy Tom Barrack, who has been attempting to solidify the ceasefire and to push Lebanon to move ahead with disarmament of Hezbollah.

During a visit to Lebanon last week, Barrack said the “Lebanese government has done their part” and “now what we need is for Israel to comply with that equal handshake.”

Lebanon needs international support to rebuild after last year’s war, which left large swathes of southern and eastern Lebanon in ruins and caused an estimated USD 11.1 billion in damages, according to the World Bank. International aid is likely to be contingent on Hezbollah disarming.

However, the Lebanese government must move cautiously to avoid an internal explosion of unrest. Naim Kassem, Hezbollah’s secretary-general, has vowed to fight efforts to disarm the group by force, sowing fears of civil conflict in the country.

Hezbollah’s leadership has vowed not to disarm, saying the national government’s decision to remove the Iran-backed group’s weapons by the end of the year serves Israel’s interests.

On Monday, Kassem reiterated the group’s stance of refusing to give up its weapons saying Israel will first have to leave Lebanon, stop its attacks, release Lebanese prisoners and allow Lebanon to start the reconstruction process in areas destroyed during the Israel-Hezbollah war.

“After that, we can discuss a national defence strategy,” Kassem said referring to what could be the future of Hezbollah’s weapons and the possibility of putting it under government control.

“We will not give up the weapons that brought us honour. We will not give up the weapons that defend us against our enemy,” Kassim said in a televised speech. “The weapons are our souls, honour, land, dignity and the future of our children.”

In an apparent warning to the Lebanese government, Kassem said that the decision to disarm Hezbollah came according to dictation by the US and Israel, adding that “whoever wants to remove the weapons means that they want to remove our soul and at that time the world will see our strength.”

Israel has accused Hezbollah of trying to rebuild its military capabilities, and its military has said the five locations in Lebanon provide vantage points or are located across from communities in northern Israel, where about 60,000 Israelis were displaced during the war.

Since the war ended, Hezbollah has withdrawn most of its fighters and weapons from the area along the border with Israel south of the Litani river.

The ceasefire agreement it vague how Hezbollah’s weapons and military facilities north of the Litani river should be treated, saying Lebanese authorities should dismantle unauthorised facilities starting with the area south of the river.

Hezbollah maintains that the deal only covers the area south of the Litani, while Israel and the US say it mandates disarmament of the group throughout Lebanon.

A low-level conflict between Israel and Hezbollah started a day after the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack against Israel from Gaza, when Hezbollah began launching rockets across the border in support of its Palestinian ally. The conflict escalated into war in September 2024 and left more than 4,000 people dead.

Sensex, Nifty open lower as Trump tariffs trigger global sell-off

Mumbai, Aug 25: Benchmark BSE Sensex rebounded by 329 points on Monday following heavy buying in IT and auto shares and a rally in global equity markets on hopes of a potential US Federal Reserve rate cut.

The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 329.06 points or 0.40 per cent to settle at 81,635.91 with 20 of its constituents ending higher and 10 with losses. During the day, it jumped 492.21 points or 0.60 per cent to 81,799.06.

“A wave of optimism swept through the domestic market, driven by expectations of a Fed rate cut in September and a subsequent decline in the US 10-year yield. The IT index outperformed, buoyed by favourable global sentiment,” Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said.

Gains in Tata Motors, Sun Pharma, Maruti, Titan and Reliance Industries also added to the recovery.

Bharat Electronics, Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank were among the laggards.

“Markets started the week on a positive note, gaining nearly half a per cent on the back of favourable global cues. Investor sentiment was buoyed by easing global rate concerns, with comments from the US Federal Reserve hinting at a possible rate cut next month, boosting risk appetite across emerging markets,” Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said.

The BSE Midcap gauge went up marginally by 0.10 per cent, while the Smallcap index ended flat, with a mild dip of 0.02 per cent. “Indian equities mirrored the optimism from Wall Street as Nifty-50 opened with a sharp gap-up and managed to sustain bullish momentum through the session. The trigger came from US markets, where hopes of an imminent Fed rate cut boosted risk appetite,” Hariprasad K, Research Analyst and Founder – Livelong Wealth, said. Nair said that the domestic levers stay positive with the proposed GST rationalisation to push consumption demand, and a good monsoon season could serve as a catalyst to navigate any uncertainty in the global trade environment.

In Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai’s SSE Composite index, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng settled in positive territory.

Markets in Europe were trading lower.

Legislation major blow to gambling in country

Legislation major blow to gambling in country

Srinagar, Aug 25: On Thursday, the Rajya Sabha passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, following its earlier approval in the Lok Sabha. With this, India has officially banned money-based online gaming, including popular fantasy sports, rummy, poker, and similar real-money games. This landmark legislation delivers a significant blow to India’s $3.8 billion online gaming industry, impacting major domestic platforms like Dream11, Games24x7, and Mobile Premier League (MPL).

 Why was the bill introduced?

According to Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the government took this step due to serious social and public health concerns. He outlined three key reasons (a)Online money gaming is causing harm – including psychological distress and financial ruin. (B) Protecting citizens over revenue – the government stated it prioritizes public welfare over potential tax revenues from such platforms and (c) Promoting the “good” side of gaming. The bill distinguishes between eSports (competitive skill-based gaming), online social gaming (casual, non-monetary games), and online money gaming (fantasy sports, rummy, poker, etc.)

Only eSports and social gaming will be recognized and promoted by the government, with new schemes and programs aimed at making India a game development hub.

 What Does the Bill Prohibit?

The bill completely bans all services that offer or facilitate real-mone online games. Key provisions include, bans on games where players deposit money in hopes of winning cash or other prizes, prohibition of advertisements promoting such platforms, ban on financial transactions supporting these games – banks and payment gateways are barred from processing such payments.

What Are the Penalties Under the Law?

For offering/funding online money games up to 3 years imprisonment and fine up to Rs 1 crore. For advertising or promoting such games, up to 2 years imprisonment and fine up to Rs 50 lakh. For financial transactions related to such games, up to 3 years imprisonment and fine up to Rs 1 crore. For repeated offenders, 3 to 5 years imprisonment and fine up to Rs 2 crore. The Offences under key sections are classified as cognizable and non-bailable – meaning police can arrest without a warrant, and bail is not a right.

Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the bill is not anti-gaming but rather pro-healthy gaming: “We want India to become a global hub for game development, especially in eSports and social gaming. But online money gaming has become a societal threat.” He emphasized that the bill is designed to regulate the sector, protect consumers, and encourage innovation in non-monetary gaming spaces
