Second batch of 80 Indian students evacuated from Iran to reach Delhi tonight via Armenia-Dubai route: JKSA

Srinagar, Mar 16: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Monday said that the second batch of around 80 Indians, including students and pilgrims, is set to arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), New Delhi, later this evening on a commercial flight, as part of ongoing efforts to facilitate the return of those stranded in Iran amid the prevailing war-like situation in the region.

In a statement, National Convenor of the Association, Nasir Khuehami, said that the students and pilgrims, many of whom had been stranded in war-torn Iran, are returning safely to India via a connecting journey through Armenia and Dubai, following coordinated efforts undertaken to facilitate their evacuation.

Khuehami said the group initially travelled from Yerevan Airport in Armenia to Dubai and is currently onboard Flydubai flight FZ441, which is scheduled to arrive at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, at around 9:18 PM today.

He said the journey faced unexpected disruption earlier in the day after Dubai International Airport temporarily suspended several flight operations following a drone incident that reportedly caused a fuel tank to catch fire within the airport premises, leading to delays and cancellations of multiple flights.

“The flight had already completed its first leg and reached Dubai, but the onward journey to New Delhi was delayed due to operational disruptions caused by the drone incident at the airport,” Khuehami said.

The flight was originally scheduled to arrive in New Delhi at 9:55 AM, but due to the temporary suspension of operations at Dubai Airport, the departure was delayed for several hours. The aircraft later received clearance and is now expected to land in New Delhi later this evening.

Khuehami said that around 80 Indian passengers are onboard the flight, the majority of them students from Jammu and Kashmir who were studying at various universities in Iran, along with several pilgrims.

Due to the delay in departure from Dubai, many students missed their connecting flights to Srinagar, which had been scheduled earlier in the day. The Association said it is in touch with the concerned authorities to facilitate their onward travel and ensure necessary assistance once they arrive in Delhi.

The Association further said that more Indian students, along with two additional groups of Kargil pilgrims, are scheduled to depart from Armenia for New Delhi on March 17, while the remaining pilgrims are expected to depart on March 18, as part of the continued efforts to ensure the safe return of all stranded individuals.

Khuehami added that the Association remains in constant touch with the students, the Ministry of External Affairs, and other concerned authorities to monitor the situation and extend all possible assistance until the students safely reach their homes.

We’re ready to stop hostilities if Iran changes course: Israeli Envoy Reuven Azar

New Delhi, Mar 16: As the West Asia conflict entered its 17th day, Israeli Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, on Monday said “we are ready to stop hostilities if Iran changes course”.

Interacting with reporters here, Azar also said that in the last few days, Israel consulted “diplomatic channels”, including its partners the US and countries in the region.

“We are always for diplomacy. Unfortunately, we exhausted diplomacy to the extent that we had to take military action. We hope that diplomacy will be relevant again as a result of our military action,” he said.

The Israeli envoy said that in the past few days, Israel consulted “diplomatic channels”, including its partners the US as well as the countries in the region, and a few other nations with which it doesn’t have a diplomatic relationship.

Azar also said that through military action, “we’ve managed to degrade Iran’s launching capabilities” to a large extent.

“Right now, we are controlling the skies of Iran,” Azar told reporters, adding, “They are in dire straits.”

The future will be “brighter” if Iran decides to “change course” and recognises Israel, he added.

1.60 lakh additions in annual voter roll revision, 67,690 entries deleted

Jammu, Mar 16: More than 1.60 lakh voters were added to the electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir during the recent special summary revision (SSR), while 67,690 names were deleted and 2.29 lakh corrections carried out, according to official data.

Jammu district recorded the highest number of deletions, which included “duplicate” and “shifted” entries, in the annual voter list revision. The special summary revision is separate from the special intensive revision (SIR) carried out in some states.

According to the district-wise breakup of the current voter enrolment, Jammu district has the highest number of electors at 11,89,555, followed by Srinagar with 7,53,222 and Baramulla with 7,20,500 voters.

Among the districts, Srinagar registered the highest number of additions with 30,077, followed by Jammu with 16,855 and Baramulla with 11,854.

Jammu recorded the most deletions at 10,430, followed by Budgam with 7,762 and Anantnag with 5,241, it said.

The data reveals that a total of 1,60,974 additions, 67,690 deletions, and 2,29,920 corrections were recorded across the Union Territory during the revision exercise.

Of these, 10,639 duplicate voter entries and 34,675 shifted entries were detected and deleted across the Union territory, the data revealed.

Jammu district reported the highest number of shifted entries at 6,840, followed by Rajouri with 4,791 and Anantnag with 3,745.

Overall, the total electorate in Jammu and Kashmir stands at 87,42,878, including 44,65,161 male voters, 42,77,568 female voters, and 149 third gender voters, it added.

Officials said several steps are being taken to achieve 100 per cent voter enrolment, particularly among under-registered groups.

These include the special summary revision conducted under the Representation of the People Act, which now allows four qualifying dates in a year — January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1 — for voter registration.

In addition, the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme is being implemented to promote voter awareness, education and participation in the electoral process across the Union territory, they said.

The election authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have recently conducted voter awareness initiatives under the SVEEP programme to increase voter registration and participation, particularly among youth, women and marginalized communities, officials said.

Officials said the programme focuses on promoting informed and ethical voting practices and spreading awareness about the electoral process. Since its introduction in 2009, SVEEP has played a key role in encouraging citizens to participate actively in democratic processes, they said.

At the chief electoral office level, several awareness activities have been undertaken during the SSR of electoral rolls, they added. “These include production of short videos, documentaries and slogans in local languages, dissemination of SMS alerts in English, Hindi and Urdu to subscribers of telecom networks… regarding voter registration, and publication of advertisements in leading newspapers across Jammu and Kashmir.”

Authorities have also broadcast audio spots through private radio channels, displayed scroll messages on cable television networks, and installed hoardings and posters at prominent locations to spread awareness about the voter enrolment process, they said. “In addition, scroll messages have been aired through Doordarshan stations in Jammu and Srinagar.”

At the district level, district election officers have launched multiple outreach initiatives. These include door-to-door visits by booth level officers (BLOs) and supervisors to identify and assist eligible voters in registration, they said.

Electoral literacy clubs have also been activated in schools and colleges to educate future voters about the electoral process. Polling stations have hosted “Chunav Pathshalas” to provide hands-on learning about voting procedures, they said.

Police attach properties worth Rs 1 crore under NDPS Act in Pulwama

Pulwama, Mar 16: Police on Monday attached four properties worth more than one crore belonging to an alleged drug peddler under the provisions of Section 68-F(1) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Officials said the action was taken after an investigation revealed that the accused had acquired the properties through proceeds generated from illegal drug trafficking.

The attached assets include an under-construction house, a residential house and an automobile service station, among other properties.

According to police, the attachment was carried out following due legal process as part of an ongoing crackdown against drug peddlers and the networks involved in the narcotics trade.

Authorities said the move is aimed at dismantling the financial infrastructure that sustains drug trafficking in the region.

Police said such actions are intended to ensure that individuals involved in drug trafficking do not benefit from proceeds earned through illegal activities. They added that the drive against the drug menace will continue and more such actions are expected in the coming days.

Over 200 passengers travelling in 30 vehicles rescued after snowfall at Sinthan Top

Srinagar, March 16: Authorities in Kishtwar and Anantnag districts on Sunday evening rescued more than 30 vehicles carrying around 200 passengers who were stranded at Sinthan Top following fresh snowfall.

The Daksum–Sinthan Top–Kishtwar road was closed after snowfall blocked the high-altitude pass.

“Over 30 vehicles, both light and heavy carrying about 214 passengers have been rescued at Sinthan Top by the Kishtwar and Anantnag administrations, police, Army and NHIDCL,” Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat told Greater Kashmir.

He said the rescue operation was ongoing and that most stranded passengers had either reached or were on their way to their destinations in Kishtwar and Anantnag.

Officials said sudden snowfall blocked the pass, forcing authorities to make strenuous efforts to clear the stranded passenger vehicles.

“The rescue operation was carried out by the district administration and police after the matter was brought to the attention of the Deputy commissioners and Senior superintendents of Police of Kishtwar and Anantnag,” officials said.

Member of Parliament Sajjad Kichloo appreciated the authorities’ efforts in ensuring passenger safety.

“Spoke with the Deputy Commissioner and SSP of Kishtwar regarding stranded passengers at Sinthan Top. Around 80 passengers have been rescued and are reaching Aloo Farm. Appreciate the efforts of the district and police administration,” Kichloo posted on social media platform X.

Sinthan Top is a high-altitude pass connecting Kishtwar with the Kashmir Valley via Daksum- Anantnag and often experiences harsh weather during winter months, forcing its closure.

Meanwhile, the administration and police also rescued several passengers stranded at Margan Top-another high-altitude pass connecting south Kashmir’s Anantnag district with the twin valleys of Marwah and Warwan.

The 100-kilometer Larnoo–Margan Top–Warwan road, opened in 2007 to connect the valleys with Kokernag in south Kashmir, serves as the region’s only surface link to the outside world.

In its absence, residents either trek long distances to reach Kishtwar or wait until summer to travel via the Kokernag–Sinthan route.

Fresh snowfall in higher reaches of Kashmir

Fresh snowfall in higher reaches of Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 16: Most higher reaches of Kashmir received moderate to heavy snowfall, while the plains were lashed by rains, disrupting vehicular movement in some stretches, officials said on Monday.

Several vehicles got stuck following heavy snowfall along the Sinthan Top following which police and army carried out a rescue operation on Sunday night to evacuate 214 stranded tourists and locals, they said.

Officials said the tourist resorts of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, Doodhpathri in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, and Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, received moderate snowfall.

They said the higher reaches, including Pir Ki Gali along the Mughal Road in Shopian district of south Kashmir, Zojilla axis, Gurez in north Kashmir’s Bandipora, Sadhna Top in north Kashmir’s Kupwara, and Sinthan Top, connecting Anantnag in south Kashmir to Kishtwar in Jammu region, received heavy snowfall.

Sadhna Top has received over 12 inches of fresh snowfall, while Sinthan Top around six inches, they added.

The officials said the snowfall has led to the closure of the vital road links in the valley, including the Gurez-Bandipora road, Sinthan-Kishtwar road, and the Mughal Road, the alternate road connecting the Kashmir Valley with the Jammu region.

They said vehicular movement has also been suspended on the Srinagar-Leh highway due to accumulation of snow at Zojila Pass.

The plains of the valley, including Srinagar, were lashed by rains which continued intermittently till Monday morning.

Srinagar city recorded 15.9 mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours.

Pahalgam tourist resort, which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, received 15.7 mm of rains.

The wet weather has brought down the temperatures across the valley.

Srinagar city recorded the maximum temperature of 11.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday, which was nearly four degrees lower than normal, the officials said.

The other weather stations across the valley also registered below normal temperatures.

The lower temperatures broke the trend of unusually higher day temperatures prevalent in the valley over the last few weeks.

The Meteorological Department has forecast erratic weather till March 20.

It said there is a possibility of a brief spell of light rain or snow in the higher reaches, at isolated places on Monday and Tuesday.

From March 18-20, the weather will remain generally cloudy with a possibility of intermittent light to moderate rain or snow at many places.

The MeT Office said another wet spells is likely on March 24-25, with light rain, or snow in the higher reaches, at scattered places.

It said there is a possibility of thunder or gusty winds, about 40-50 kmph, at a few places on Monday, and March 18-20.

The weather office has advised farmers to suspend farm operations till March 20.

Trump calls for allies to help reopen Strait of Hormuz

Trump calls for allies to help reopen Strait of Hormuz

Dubai, Mar 16: US President Donald Trump said that he has demanded about seven countries send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, as Iranian strikes continued to rain down on Gulf countries early Monday.

Dubai International Airport — the world’s busiest — suspended operations after a drone struck a fuel tank, starting a fire. Authorities said it was quickly contained and no injuries were reported.

Tehran has accused the United States of using “ports, docks and hideouts” in the United Arab Emirates to launch strikes on Kharg Island, home to the main terminal handling Iran’s oil exports, without providing evidence, as oil prices soared.

Trump said the US is negotiating with countries heavily reliant on Middle East crude to join a coalition to police the waterway where about one-fifth the world’s traded oil normally flows, but declined to name them.

Meanwhile, Israeli strikes have deepened Lebanon’s humanitarian crisis, with more than 850 people killed and over 850,000 displaced.

Here is the latest:

Dubai flights to remain suspended

————————————

Hours after a drone strike sparked a fire at Dubai’s main airport, Emirates says in its latest update that all of its flights there “remain suspended until further notice.”

The airline says it is working with authorities to restart operations when possible. It urged passengers not to travel to the airport.

Dubai International Airport is the world’s busiest airport for international travel and a key hub for many routes linking the East and West.

UAE intercepts more drone and missile attacks

————————————————-

The United Arab Emirates’ Defense Ministry said forces were intercepting Iranian missiles and drones Monday morning.

Earlier, a drone hit a fuel tank at the Dubai International Airport.

Trump suggests he may delay his much-anticipated visit to China at the end of the month as he seeks to ramp up the pressure on Beijing to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz and calm oil prices.

In an interview Sunday with the Financial Times, Trump said China’s reliance on oil from the Middle East means it ought to help with a new coalition he is trying to put together to get oil tanker traffic moving through the strait after Iran’s threats have throttled global flows of oil.

Trump said “we’d like to know” before the trip whether Beijing will help.

“We may delay,” Trump said in the interview.

Trump’s new comments came as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on Monday in Paris for a new round of trade talks that were meant to pave the way for Trump’s Beijing trip.

Saudi crown prince speaks with UAE president

————————————————-

Mohammed bin Salman and Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the latest regional developments in a phone call, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement early Monday.

The two leaders said the continued “Iranian attacks against Gulf Cooperation Council countries represent a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and stability,” adding that GCC states will continue efforts to defend their countries

Road and tunnel to Dubai International Airport closed

——————————————————–

Emirati authorities have closed the main road and tunnel leading to Dubai International Airport.

Dubai Police urged drivers to use alternative roads.

Authorities said earlier a drone hit a fuel tank at the airport, causing fire with no casualties.

Saudi air defences down large drone attack

———————————————-

Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry said early Monday it downed an additional large barrage of 35 drones in the country’s eastern region, one of the kingdom’s least dense, close to Iran and home to major oil installations.

This brings the total number of drones intercepted to at least 60 in the last few hours.

The ministry did not immediately report casualties or damage.

Australia not sending warship to Strait of Hormuz, minister says

———————————————————————-

The Australian government says a warship won’t be sent to the Middle East to keep the Strait of Hormuz open to international shipping.

U.S. President Donald Trump said that he has demanded about seven countries send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, as Iranian strikes continued to rain down on Gulf countries.

Australia’s Transport Minister Catherine King told Australian Broadcasting Corp. on Monday she was not aware of Australia receiving such a request.

“We won’t be sending a ship to the Strait of Hormuz. We know how incredibly important that is, but that’s not something that we’ve been asked or that we’re contributing to,” King said.

Australia said last week it was providing the UAE with an air force surveillance jet and air-to-air missiles to defend against Iranian attacks.

But a government statement said Australia was “not taking offensive action against Iran.” (AP)
