Fresh snowfall in higher reaches of Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 16: Most higher reaches of Kashmir received moderate to heavy snowfall, while the plains were lashed by rains, disrupting vehicular movement in some stretches, officials said on Monday.

Several vehicles got stuck following heavy snowfall along the Sinthan Top following which police and army carried out a rescue operation on Sunday night to evacuate 214 stranded tourists and locals, they said.

Officials said the tourist resorts of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, Doodhpathri in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, and Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, received moderate snowfall.

They said the higher reaches, including Pir Ki Gali along the Mughal Road in Shopian district of south Kashmir, Zojilla axis, Gurez in north Kashmir’s Bandipora, Sadhna Top in north Kashmir’s Kupwara, and Sinthan Top, connecting Anantnag in south Kashmir to Kishtwar in Jammu region, received heavy snowfall.

Sadhna Top has received over 12 inches of fresh snowfall, while Sinthan Top around six inches, they added.

The officials said the snowfall has led to the closure of the vital road links in the valley, including the Gurez-Bandipora road, Sinthan-Kishtwar road, and the Mughal Road, the alternate road connecting the Kashmir Valley with the Jammu region.

They said vehicular movement has also been suspended on the Srinagar-Leh highway due to accumulation of snow at Zojila Pass.

The plains of the valley, including Srinagar, were lashed by rains which continued intermittently till Monday morning.

Srinagar city recorded 15.9 mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours.

Pahalgam tourist resort, which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, received 15.7 mm of rains.

The wet weather has brought down the temperatures across the valley.

Srinagar city recorded the maximum temperature of 11.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday, which was nearly four degrees lower than normal, the officials said.

The other weather stations across the valley also registered below normal temperatures.

The lower temperatures broke the trend of unusually higher day temperatures prevalent in the valley over the last few weeks.

The Meteorological Department has forecast erratic weather till March 20.

It said there is a possibility of a brief spell of light rain or snow in the higher reaches, at isolated places on Monday and Tuesday.

From March 18-20, the weather will remain generally cloudy with a possibility of intermittent light to moderate rain or snow at many places.

The MeT Office said another wet spells is likely on March 24-25, with light rain, or snow in the higher reaches, at scattered places.

It said there is a possibility of thunder or gusty winds, about 40-50 kmph, at a few places on Monday, and March 18-20.

The weather office has advised farmers to suspend farm operations till March 20.

Trump calls for allies to help reopen Strait of Hormuz

Trump calls for allies to help reopen Strait of Hormuz

Dubai, Mar 16: US President Donald Trump said that he has demanded about seven countries send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, as Iranian strikes continued to rain down on Gulf countries early Monday.

Dubai International Airport — the world’s busiest — suspended operations after a drone struck a fuel tank, starting a fire. Authorities said it was quickly contained and no injuries were reported.

Tehran has accused the United States of using “ports, docks and hideouts” in the United Arab Emirates to launch strikes on Kharg Island, home to the main terminal handling Iran’s oil exports, without providing evidence, as oil prices soared.

Trump said the US is negotiating with countries heavily reliant on Middle East crude to join a coalition to police the waterway where about one-fifth the world’s traded oil normally flows, but declined to name them.

Meanwhile, Israeli strikes have deepened Lebanon’s humanitarian crisis, with more than 850 people killed and over 850,000 displaced.

Here is the latest:

Dubai flights to remain suspended

————————————

Hours after a drone strike sparked a fire at Dubai’s main airport, Emirates says in its latest update that all of its flights there “remain suspended until further notice.”

The airline says it is working with authorities to restart operations when possible. It urged passengers not to travel to the airport.

Dubai International Airport is the world’s busiest airport for international travel and a key hub for many routes linking the East and West.

UAE intercepts more drone and missile attacks

————————————————-

The United Arab Emirates’ Defense Ministry said forces were intercepting Iranian missiles and drones Monday morning.

Earlier, a drone hit a fuel tank at the Dubai International Airport.

Trump suggests he may delay his much-anticipated visit to China at the end of the month as he seeks to ramp up the pressure on Beijing to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz and calm oil prices.

In an interview Sunday with the Financial Times, Trump said China’s reliance on oil from the Middle East means it ought to help with a new coalition he is trying to put together to get oil tanker traffic moving through the strait after Iran’s threats have throttled global flows of oil.

Trump said “we’d like to know” before the trip whether Beijing will help.

“We may delay,” Trump said in the interview.

Trump’s new comments came as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on Monday in Paris for a new round of trade talks that were meant to pave the way for Trump’s Beijing trip.

Saudi crown prince speaks with UAE president

————————————————-

Mohammed bin Salman and Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the latest regional developments in a phone call, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement early Monday.

The two leaders said the continued “Iranian attacks against Gulf Cooperation Council countries represent a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and stability,” adding that GCC states will continue efforts to defend their countries

Road and tunnel to Dubai International Airport closed

——————————————————–

Emirati authorities have closed the main road and tunnel leading to Dubai International Airport.

Dubai Police urged drivers to use alternative roads.

Authorities said earlier a drone hit a fuel tank at the airport, causing fire with no casualties.

Saudi air defences down large drone attack

———————————————-

Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry said early Monday it downed an additional large barrage of 35 drones in the country’s eastern region, one of the kingdom’s least dense, close to Iran and home to major oil installations.

This brings the total number of drones intercepted to at least 60 in the last few hours.

The ministry did not immediately report casualties or damage.

Australia not sending warship to Strait of Hormuz, minister says

———————————————————————-

The Australian government says a warship won’t be sent to the Middle East to keep the Strait of Hormuz open to international shipping.

U.S. President Donald Trump said that he has demanded about seven countries send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, as Iranian strikes continued to rain down on Gulf countries.

Australia’s Transport Minister Catherine King told Australian Broadcasting Corp. on Monday she was not aware of Australia receiving such a request.

“We won’t be sending a ship to the Strait of Hormuz. We know how incredibly important that is, but that’s not something that we’ve been asked or that we’re contributing to,” King said.

Australia said last week it was providing the UAE with an air force surveillance jet and air-to-air missiles to defend against Iranian attacks.

But a government statement said Australia was “not taking offensive action against Iran.” (AP)

21-day fuel stock available in J&K, kerosene supply resumed to prevent shortages, help people: Minister Satish Sharma

Srinagar, Mar 16: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Satish Sharma on Monday said the government has around 21 days of fuel and essential commodity stock in Jammu and Kashmir and that kerosene supply has been restarted to ensure people do not face shortages.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Tulip Show by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Minister Sharma said the administration is closely monitoring supplies and will take strict action against those involved in black-marketing.

“We have sufficient stock for around 21 days. Some people have been found involved in black-marketing and whoever is found guilty—whether it is a petrol pump or gas agency their licence will be cancelled,” he said.

The minister said that although Jammu and Kashmir had earlier become a kerosene-free region, the government has now reintroduced kerosene supply to provide additional relief to consumers during the current situation.

“We were a kerosene-free state, but we have started kerosene distribution again, which will provide significant support to people,” he said.

He said the government’s priority is to ensure that essential commodities remain available and that people do not face difficulties.

“We are servants of the people. Anyone involved in adulteration or hoarding will face strict action, no matter how influential,” he said.

Commenting on the situation, the minister said peace should remain the priority and expressed hope that tensions would ease soon. “We want peace. Hate has always been defeated by love and we hope the situation ends soon,” he said.

Minister Sharma also said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah the government is committed to development and strengthening the region’s tourism sector.

Calling Kashmir “the Switzerland of India” he said the government expects a record tourist footfall this year, especially with the opening of the Tulip Garden.

“We hope tourists will arrive in record numbers and there will be no inconvenience to them. Our focus remains prosperity and progress,” he said.—(KNO)

Dubai drone attack delays return of 80 Indian students from Iran

Srinagar, Mar 16: The return of around 80 Indian students stranded in Iran was delayed on Monday after their connecting flight from Dubai to Delhi was held up following a drone attack that disrupted flight operations in the Emirati city.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) said that while the students successfully completed the first leg of their journey from Armenia to Dubai, the onward Flydubai flight (FZ441) to the national capital has been delayed.

“The aircraft is currently in Dubai and has not yet departed for Delhi. The flight was earlier scheduled to arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, at 9:55 AM this morning,” the association said.

According to the JKSA, the delay was caused by a drone attack in Dubai, which has temporarily affected flight schedules.

Notably, the first batch of over 70 Indian students—the majority of them from Jammu and Kashmir—along with several pilgrims, arrived safely at the Delhi airport on Sunday as part of the initial phase of the evacuation process from the war-torn region. (KNS)

Srinagar-Jammu NH open

Srinagar-Jammu NH open

Ramban, Ma 15: Despite a spell of rainfall, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open on Sunday for two-way movement of Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and heavy vehicles.

However, traffic movement remained slow at several stretches due to single-lane sections and ongoing four-laning construction work between Ramban and Banihal.

According to traffic authorities, the highway is likely to remain open on Monday as well, subject to fair weather and favourable road conditions, for the movement of LMVs and heavy vehicles.

Officials said vehicular movement was particularly slow between Maroog and Kishtwari Pather, where narrow road stretches and ongoing construction activities in the Ramban-Banihal sector have created bottlenecks.

Temporary congestion was also reported after a few heavy vehicles broke down along the route.

Despite these challenges, hundreds of private cars and passenger vehicles travelled in both directions throughout the day while load carriers continued to move steadily along the highway.

The Traffic Department issued a fresh advisory stating that, weather and road conditions permitting, vehicles would continue to ply from both sides towards Srinagar and Jammu on Monday.

Authorities have advised passengers and LMV operators to undertake travel only during daytime hours. Night travel has been discouraged due to the risk of shooting stones, landslides, and ongoing construction work in the Ramban-Banihal stretch.

Commuters have also been urged to confirm the latest road status with Traffic Control Units in Jammu, Srinagar, Udhampur and Ramban before starting their journey on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, traffic authorities said that National Highway 244, which connects Kishtwar with Sinthan Top and Anantnag, has been temporarily closed for vehicular movement due to fresh snowfall.

Light snowfall shuts Gurez road

Bandipora, Mar 15: The 85-km Bandipora-Gurez road was shut due amid inclement weather following light snowfall across higher reaches of the district, including Gurez Valley, on Sunday.

According to officials, low visibility and slippery conditions at Razdan Top, at an elevation of nearly 12,000 feet, prompted authorities to act beforehand to avoid any eventuality due to the dangerous conditions the road poses.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate said, “The road is closed and will reopen once weather conditions improve.”

Meanwhile, residents of Gurez Valley said that the region, including Tulail, Dawar and Bagtore, was draped in a thin snow blanket, plunging temperatures further in the remote valley.

Notably, the Gurez–Bandipora road, which normally remains closed for months together, witnessed a closure of just over 20 days from January 23 to February 13.

It also recorded one of the quickest reopenings of the road in recent years by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which maintains the Gurez-Bandipora road.

US urges citizens to leave Iraq immediately amid rising tensions

US urges citizens to leave Iraq immediately amid rising tensions

New Delhi, Mar 15: The United States has urged its citizens to leave Iraq immediately as security concerns intensify in the region. The US Embassy in Baghdad warned that Iran and allied militias pose a serious threat to public safety, citing past attacks on American citizens, interests and critical infrastructure, reports the BBC.

The embassy also advised Americans not to travel to the diplomatic compound in Baghdad or the Consulate General in Erbil due to the continuing risk of rocket, drone and mortar attacks in Iraqi airspace. The warning comes a day after the embassy building was reportedly struck during an attack that sent thick smoke rising over the area.

In a separate development, US President Donald Trump said Iran had expressed interest in reaching a deal with Washington but added that the current terms were not acceptable. He indicated that any future agreement would require Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions, reports the BBC. Trump also claimed that the US had “totally demolished” Kharg Island, a major hub for Iran’s oil exports, and suggested further strikes could follow. At the same time, he dismissed concerns about rising global oil prices, saying global supplies remain plentiful and disruptions would soon ease.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the Strait of Hormuz remains open for international shipping, though vessels linked to Iran’s enemies would not be allowed to pass. He accused the United States of targeting civilian locations in Iran, an allegation Washington has denied. Araghchi also described Russia and China as Iran’s strategic partners amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

The conflict has begun to affect the wider region. Kuwait reported that several hostile drones were detected, with two striking the Ahmed Al-Jaber Air Base and injuring three members of the armed forces. Kuwait’s international airport also reported damage to its radar system following a separate drone attack.

In the United Arab Emirates, a strike hit the port of Fujairah, a key global oil storage and refuelling hub, causing a large fire. The crisis has also drawn international reactions. Switzerland refused two US requests to allow military overflights through its airspace, citing its long-standing neutrality laws that prohibit flights serving military purposes in ongoing conflicts.

Amid rising tensions in the region, Donald Trump urged countries dependent on oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz to help secure the vital maritime route that carries nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply. According to the BBC, Trump said the United States would work with other nations to ensure the passage remains safe for global energy trade.

Responding to the developments, a spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Defence said Britain was in discussions with allies and partners on “a range of options” to ensure the security of shipping in the region. China also called for restraint. A spokesperson for the Embassy of China in Washington, D.C. told CNN that China supports an immediate cessation of hostilities and stressed that all parties share responsibility for maintaining a stable and uninterrupted global energy supply. The spokesperson did not indicate whether Beijing would support Trump’s proposal but said China would continue communication with relevant parties.
