BJP, Congress running Parliament like 2-party system: Er Rashid

BJP, Congress running Parliament like 2-party system: Er Rashid

New Delhi, Mar 13: Member of Parliament from Baramulla Engineer Rashid addressing in the Parliament, raised concerns over termination of employees, the condition of Jammu and Kashmir’s fruit industry and various governance issues affecting the region, said a press release.

During his intervention, MP Er Rashid remarked that smaller parties and independent members often struggle to get speaking time in Parliament, alleging that the two major national parties dominate the proceedings. “There are 240 members of BJP, around 100 members of Congress and the rest are over 200 members, but these two parties have virtually held everyone hostage. It looks like a two-party system like America where others are not allowed to speak,” he said.

The Baramulla MP Er Rashid thanked the Union Finance Minister for responding to his written demands even while he was in jail. “I want to thank the Finance Minister Madam Nirmala Sitharaman. Even while I was in jail, I had written the demands of my people and she wrote back assuring that work would be done on them,” he said.

Taking a dig at the government over economic packages announced for Jammu and Kashmir after 2019, MP Er Rashid said the region had received “unique packages.” Referring to restrictions on social media, he remarked “Running social media costs money and time. In Kashmir if someone writes something on social media the police arrest him, so people have stopped using it. Our money is saved. This is also a package for us.”

Highlighting unemployment in the region, the MP said J&K has the highest unemployment rate in the country according to government data. He added sarcastically: “You have found a very good method to remove unemployment. Every month our LG Sahib is terminating employees. Like the slogan ‘Garibi Hatao’, this has become ‘Mulazim Hatao’.”  Referring to the recent firing incident targeting Dr Farooq Abdullah in Jammu, he questioned the security situation in the region. “You say everything is peaceful in Kashmir. Yesterday in broad daylight shots were fired at Dr Farooq Abdullah Sahib. Thank God he survived. If a leader like him is not safe, where does the safety of an ordinary citizen stand?” he asked.

Assassination attempt on Farooq Abdullah security lapse: Karan Singh

Assassination attempt on Farooq Abdullah security lapse: Karan Singh

Jammu, Mar 13: Former Sadr-e-Riyasat and veteran politician Karan Singh Friday termed the assassination attempt on former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah as a “security lapse.”

“Yes, it seems to be a security lapse. Because he (Farooq) is having Z plus security and if it (incident) happens, it definitely will be a security lapse somewhere. Thank God, he remained unhurt otherwise it would have created chaos,” Singh stated, while speaking to the media persons on the sidelines of the inaugural event of 4th edition of “Tawi festival”, being organized by Amar Mahal Museum and Library.

“Now why it happened and what is the background of the man who made such an attempt, is a matter of investigation. Some animosity (as the man is claiming) may be the reason. We visited Dr Farooq at his residence in Bhatindi on Thursday to meet him. From the airport, I went directly there, along with my children and grand-children as we shared an old and very cordial relationship with Dr Farooq. He has been a good friend,” senior politician revealed, while recalling that he was brought to politics again by Abdullah.

“I had left politics and remained away from it for 12 years. It was Dr Farooq, who brought me again back to the political realm, where I worked for another 18 years. Thanking God for protecting him, we wish him a long life,” Singh said.

Responding to a question about the situation emerging in the backdrop of ongoing war in West Asia, Singh said, “It is absolutely disastrous. Iran is a great civilisation and our ties with it (Iran) date back to thousands of years. One finds it very unfortunate to see the destruction of Iran, mainly due to Israel, which attacked it while the negotiations of Iran and US were still on, thus preventing any source of agreement between the duo (US and Iran). I still think that they should come to an agreement.”

With regard to proceedings during the first day of “Tawi festival”, Singh lauded the lecture delivered on the significance of water.

In that context, he criticised the construction of four and six-lane roads in Himalayan range.

“This has destroyed the entire Himalayan range and has made it fragile. I have written a letter to (Nitin) Gadkari appreciating his works. The way he is getting the roads constructed in the plains – is unprecedented. However, I requested him that the same yardsticks should not be applied in the hilly areas. We are paying a heavy price for it as we witnessed in Jammu, Himachal last year,” Singh said.

“No four-lane is required in the hilly areas. Tourists can comfortably travel on two-way roads. I’ve travelled widely and have seen that every place does not have a four or six-lane road. To destroy mountains in the name of tourists is not justified. It is not judicious to construct hotels in the hilly areas by destroying Himalaya. The government should respect Himalayan culture, religious beliefs and above all ecology,” Singh said.

Ganderbal, Mar 13: The Zojila Pass on the Srinagar Leh highway remained closed for third day on Friday following fresh snowfall in higher reaches including Zojila, Drass, Minamarg areas.

Officials expressed hope that if weather conditions remain favourable, traffic movement on the highway could be restored soon.

War widens across West Asia as US aircraft crash, drone attacks, missile strikes mark new escalation

War widens across West Asia as US aircraft crash, drone attacks, missile strikes mark new escalation

New Delhi, Mar 13: The conflict centred on Iran widened further on Friday with fresh military incidents across West Asia, including the crash of a US refuelling aircraft in Iraq, killing four of its occupants, a deadly drone attack on French forces and continued missile exchanges between Iran and Israel. Dubai once again was targeted.

The US military confirmed that a KC-135 refuelling aircraft went down in western Iraq following an incident involving two aircraft. The second plane landed safely. The aircraft was operating in what the military described as friendly airspace, and early assessments indicated the crash was not caused by hostile fire or friendly fire. Rescue operations are continuing as officials attempt to determine the cause of the incident and the fate of the crew.

Us Central Command in a message on X said “Four Confirmed Deceased in Loss of U.S. KC-135 Over Iraq TAMPA, Fla. – At approximately 2 pm ET on March 12, a U.S. KC-135 refueling aircraft went down in western Iraq. Four of six crew members on board the aircraft have been confirmed deceased as rescue efforts continue. The circumstances of the incident are under investigation. However, the loss of the aircraft was not due to hostile fire or friendly fire. The identities of the service members are being withheld until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.”

The KC-135 is a key aerial refuelling tanker used by the US Air Force to extend the range of combat aircraft. The plane typically carries a crew of three and forms part of a fleet of nearly 400 tanker aircraft operated by Air Mobility Command.

The crash adds to a series of operational pressures facing US forces deployed across the region as the war intensifies.

A separate security incident struck coalition forces in northern Iraq when a French soldier was killed in a drone attack in the Erbil region of the Kurdistan area. Several other French troops were injured in the strike and were transported to a nearby medical facility. France maintains hundreds of soldiers in the region as part of the international coalition against the militant group Islamic State.

The attack occurred near Erbil, a strategic hub for coalition operations located roughly 115 kilometres from the Iranian border. It marks the first French military death linked to the broader war with Iran and underscores the widening geographic footprint of the conflict.

Meanwhile, the war continued to spill across several fronts. Iranian missile attacks and allied militia strikes have targeted Israeli territory, with a missile impact reported in the northern Israeli town of Zarzir injuring dozens of people and damaging residential buildings. Emergency services said multiple casualties were caused by shrapnel and flying debris, while fires triggered by the strike were later contained.

The barrage formed part of what Iranian forces described as a new wave of missile operations against Israeli targets and US military facilities in the region. Iranian-backed groups have also claimed a series of coordinated attacks on US bases across Iraq.

At sea, tensions continued to rise around the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil normally flows. Since the start of hostilities, more than a dozen oil tankers and cargo vessels have been struck in the Gulf, intensifying fears of a major disruption to global energy supplies.

The threat to maritime routes gained further urgency after a message attributed to Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, signalled that Tehran intends to keep the strait closed as a strategic pressure point. The statement, read on Iranian state media, was the first public communication linked to Khamenei since he succeeded his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed earlier in the conflict.

Iranian military leaders have also warned that energy infrastructure across the region could be targeted if Iranian oil facilities continue to be attacked, raising the spectre of further shocks to the global energy market.

The United States and Israel have meanwhile continued to expand their air campaign. American officials say more than 6,000 targets inside Iran have been struck since operations began, including command centres, missile facilities, naval vessels and air defence systems. Around 60 ships and dozens of minelaying vessels have been damaged or destroyed in the strikes.

The conflict has also spread to Lebanon, where Israeli forces have launched new strikes against positions linked to Hezbollah in the suburbs of Beirut. The attacks are part of preparations for a possible expansion of military operations against the Iran-backed group.

Regional air defences have been increasingly active as the war spreads. Saudi Arabia reported intercepting multiple drones over its eastern provinces, while other Gulf states have heightened alert levels amid concerns that energy facilities or shipping lanes could be targeted. Dubai, for the third time since the beginning of the war, witnessed an attack on a civilian building

The humanitarian toll of the war is also mounting rapidly. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that more than 3.2 million people have already been displaced within Iran since the US-Israeli campaign began in late February. Aid agencies warn that the fighting risks triggering a wider regional crisis if hostilities continue to expand. With missile strikes, drone attacks and naval confrontations now unfolding simultaneously across several countries, the conflict shows little sign of easing, raising concerns that the war could evolve into a prolonged regional confrontation.

Key safety, commuter facility works worth Rs 171.25 Cr on NH-44 in J&K completed: Nitin Gadkari

Jammu, Mar 13: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Friday asserted that in Jammu and Kashmir, key safety and commuter facility works on NH-44 with a total project cost of about Rs 171.25 Cr were completed.

Gadkari shared this information on social media with a collage of pictures depicting safety and commuter facilities created on and along Srinagar Jammu National Highway (NH 44).

“The initiatives include blackspot rectification at SIDCO Chowk and the Gole Mela–Sangoor stretch, construction of an LVUP with service roads at Samba, and development of modern wayside amenities at Jhajjar Kotli, Qazigund, and Marhama. These locations had been identified as accident-prone sections and high-conflict traffic points along the highway. The completed interventions improve traffic circulation, enable safer turning movements, and optimise road geometry, significantly enhancing safety while easing congestion,” Gadkari stated.

The wayside amenities developed along the corridor, the Union Minister pointed out, provided rest areas, parking facilities, food courts, and sanitation services for commuters, tourists, and truck drivers travelling on this vital route.

“These improvements will facilitate smoother and safer movement of passenger and freight traffic on NH-44, the crucial corridor connecting Jammu with the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country,” Gadkari said. He credited the Prime Minister for his visionary leadership while reiterating commitment to bolster highway infrastructure in J&K.

“Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, we remain committed to strengthening highway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir to promote connectivity, economic growth, and tourism,” Gadkari asserted.

Gadkari’s posts elicited quick response from the Union Minister of State in PMO Dr Jitendra Singh, who too pointed out on social media that PM was giving high priority to development activities in UT. He also thanked Gadkari for bolstering road safety in J&K.

“With PM Narendra Modi giving high priority to development activities in Jammu and Kashmir, new dimensions are seen being added in each sector. Works worth about Rs 171.25 Cr, including blackspot rectification at the Gole Mela–Sangoor stretch in Udhampur district, along with improvements at Samba, Jhajjar Kotli, Qazigund and Marhama will significantly enhance road safety, traffic flow, and commuter convenience,” Dr Jitendra posted, while tanking Gadkari.

Union Minister of State in PMO said that such focussed interventions at accident-prone stretches would go a long way in ensuring safer highways and smoother connectivity for the people of the region.

“Thanks Union Minister @nitin_gadkari ji for strengthening road safety and commuter facilities along National Highway 44 in J&K,” Dr Jitendra posted.

MHA orders review of VIP security after attack on Farooq Abdullah

MHA orders review of VIP security after attack on Farooq Abdullah

New Delhi, Mar 13: The Union home ministry will undertake a comprehensive security audit of all VIPs under the central security cover in the wake of the assassination bid on former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah, officials said on Friday.

The decision to hold the review next week was taken in a meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Tapan Deka and senior officials from the VIP security wing of the MHA, they said.

A security cover to such VIPs is provided by central paramilitary forces like the CRPF, CISF, NSG, and ITBP.

Officials said the review will also be relevant because assembly polls in five states — Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry — are taking place soon, requiring a host of political VIPs to travel across these regions.

There are about 400 VIPs in various security categories under the central list, which includes about 220 with the CRPF, 156 with the CISF, nine with the NSG and a few with the ITBP.

PTI reported on Thursday that the National Security Guard (NSG) will undertake such a review for its protectees.

NSG provides Abdullah with the top-category Z-plus security cover.

The National Security Guard (NSG) will undertake a comprehensive security audit of all its Z-plus category high-risk VIPs following the assassination attempt on former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, officials said on Thursday.

The ‘Black Cats’ commando force currently provides elite protection to nine VIPs, including Abdullah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu.

Under standard operating procedures, the force provides mobile security during transit and deploys a specialised Close Protection Team (CPT) of four commandos when a dignitary is inside an indoor venue, such as a banquet hall or convention centre.

The officials had told PTI that it is standard procedure to review or audit security measures whenever an “extraordinary incident” involves an NSG protectee.

“The security audit process will be initiated. While the NSG is tasked with the immediate safety of the protectee, it remains the responsibility of local police and other agencies to sanitise the venue and ensure no armed individuals gain entry,” an official said.

Once the audit is finalised, the NSG will communicate its findings and highlight potential lapses to the relevant local police authorities.

Farooq Abdullah on West Asia conflict

Farooq Abdullah on West Asia conflict

Srinagar, Mar 13: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Friday wished a swift end to the war in West Asia, ascribing the shortage of fuel in Indian markets to the conflict that has led to the closing of the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil route.

“The shortage of fuel and gas is due to a war that is going on. Let’s hope and pray that this war ends soon,” Abdullah told reporters at Hazratbal shrine here.

The former J-K chief minister was at the famous shrine for Juma’atul Vida prayers.

Abdullah said some forces were trying to destroy Islam. “May Allah destroy them (who want to destroy Islam),” he said.

The party president urged the people to stay united. “We can move forward only when we are together.”
