Joint secretary (Gulf) in the Ministry of External Affairs Aseem Mahajan confirmed the killing of the two Indians in Oman at an inter-ministerial media briefing on the crisis in West Asia.

He also said that 150,000 Indian nationals have returned to India from West Asia after the conflict began.

“We express our deepest condolences to their families. Of the 11 injured (in the attack), 10 are Indians. Out of them, five have been discharged after receiving treatment, and five others are receiving treatment in local hospitals,” Mahajan said.

“None of them is reported to have serious injuries. Our mission is in close touch with the concerned company and local authorities and is rendering all assistance,” he said.

While Mahajan did not provide specific details of the attack, the Oman News Agency (ONA) reported that two drones crashed in Sohar, with one hitting the Al Awhi Industrial Zone and claiming the lives of the two expatriate workers.

These latest casualties brought the total number of Indian fatalities in the West Asia conflict to five. While the strike in Oman marked the first deaths on land, three Indian sailors have previously been killed in attacks on merchant vessels since the conflict erupted on February 28.

In his remarks, Mahajan also said that 15 Indian crew members of the US-owned oil tanker Safesea Vishnu were safely evacuated to a hotel in Basra city.

The tanker came under attack near Basra in Iraq on Wednesday. An Indian crew member was killed in the attack.

Efforts were underway to transport the mortal remains of the deceased to India , he said.

Mahajan said the Indian mission in Basra is also trying to ensure safe repatriation of the 15 Indian crew members to India.

About 80,000 offer prayers at Hazratbal, say officials

Srinagar, Mar 13: Jumat-ul-Vida, the last Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramzan, was observed across Jammu and Kashmir as thousands of devotees thronged mosques and shrines for congregational prayers.

The largest gathering for Jumat-ul-Vida prayers took place at Hazratbal Shrine on the banks of Dal Lake. Officials said an estimated 80,000 people offered prayers there.

Among the notable persons to offer prayers at Hazratbal was former chief minister Farooq Abdullah.

While all mosques and shrines were teeming with the faithful, the prayers were not offered at the historic Jama Masjid in the Nowhatta area of the city, as the authorities shut down the place for the seventh consecutive year.

Large gatherings at Alvida prayers were reported from the district and town headquarters of the valley.

Although there is a possibility of having another Friday in this year’s fasting month, Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir Nasir Ul Islam on Thursday said the Jumat-ul-Vida will be observed this week.

He said Eid ul-Fitr is likely to fall on March 20 (Friday) or March 21 (Saturday), depending on the appearance of the crescent moon. “After consulting other scholars, it was decided to observe Jumat-ul-Vida on March 13,” he said.

Consequently, the Jammu and Kashmir government announced a public holiday on Friday. An order to this effect was issued by the general administration department on Thursday.

The Lieutenant Governor was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of two-day literary-cultural conclave “Sahitya Sanskriti Samagam”, organised by University of Jammu. He commended the University of Jammu for its steadfast commitment to preserving and promoting the region’s cultural ethos and making its mark among the country’s top universities.

The Lieutenant Governor said the society shaped by our abundant literary and cultural wealth will determine who we are and what we can become.

He urged everyone to reflect in this festival of literature and culture on the true identity that binds us and instills a profound sense of belonging.

Paying homage to great luminaries and illustrious literary personalities, the Lieutenant Governor emphasised that a region’s identity is not defined merely by economic achievements; it shines through its stories, songs, and the vibrant hues of its artisans. He said that the society’s enlightened minds must recognize folk arts and folk literature as Jammu’s living vitality.

“Our folk traditions do not dwell in libraries; they thrive in writers’ quills, singers’ songs, folk dance footprints, and artists’ brushes and pigments.

With deep responsibility, I call upon everyone, especially youth to serve literature and culture.  It upholds the living legacy of values passed down through generations, entrusting you not just with an inheritance but with the duty of its cultural-literary bequest. This tradition teaches us the virtue of inclusion,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

Mirwaiz slams closure of Jamia Masjid on Jumat-ul-Vida, draws parallels with Al Aqsa mosque

Srinagar, Mar 13: Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid and Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr. Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq have strongly condemned the continued closure of the historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar on the occasion of Jumatul Vida, the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadhan as tens of thousands of devotees traditionally gather from towns and villages to offer congregational prayers and supplications.

Reacting to the development, Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr. Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq said that on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramzan, when tens of thousands gather from towns and villages for prayers and supplication at the historic Jama Masjid Srinagar, its gates have once again been locked.

He said that for the seventh consecutive year, the administration has denied Muslims the right to offer prayers at Jama Masjid on this auspicious day. Mirwaiz added that just as Israel has forcibly shut the gates of Masjid al-Aqsa during Ramadhan, a similar painful reality is being witnessed here.

“Our hearts bleed,” he said, adding that it is deeply shameful that the houses of Allah are being locked against the faithful.

The Auqaf said that authorities once again locked the gates of the historic mosque from all sides and placed Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr. Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq under house arrest, preventing him from delivering the sermon and leading the prayers on this sacred occasion.

The management expressed deep anguish that for the seventh consecutive year, Muslims have been denied the opportunity to offer Jumatul Vida prayers at the Valley’s central congregational mosque.

It said that such restrictions not only hurt the religious sentiments of the people but also amount to denying worshippers their fundamental right to pray in the house of Allah.

Future-ready IT parks to come up in J&K, innovation hub planned at IIT Jammu

Jammu, Mar 13: The Jammu and Kashmir government is set to establish future-ready IT Parks in a phased manner across the Union Territory, beginning with an innovation and research park at the IIT Jammu campus on the outskirts of the city.

The initiative received a boost after the Board of Governors of IIT Jammu approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) on January 5, 2026, while the J&K government has accorded in-principle approval for collaboration, officials said.

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo reviewed a comprehensive roadmap for the project, which aims to strengthen the UT’s technology ecosystem, generate employment opportunities and build institutional capacity to meet future technological challenges.

“A detailed plan for setting up the innovation and research park, beginning within the IIT campus has been started and later expanding to other locations across the Union Territory,” officials said.

According to the proposal, the project will be implemented in phases. Under Phase-I, scheduled for launch during May-June 2026, about 50,000 sq ft of existing built-up space at IIT Jammu will be upgraded to initiate operations of the IT and innovation park.

Phase-II envisages construction of about 120,000 sq ft of additional infrastructure, with work proposed to begin in 2026 and completion targeted by 2028.

Phase-III proposes expansion of the IT Park outside the campus to enable larger industry participation and technology-driven growth, they said.

Officials said land has also been identified in the Kashmir division for expansion in subsequent phases, while additional land is proposed to be earmarked near the IIT Jammu campus for future development.

The proposed Innovation Research Park (Phase-B) at IIT Jammu will have a built-up area of over 11,000 square metres and multiple functional floors to accommodate innovation labs, technology companies, startups and research collaborations, along with support facilities to promote industry-academia partnerships and incubation, they added.

Emphasising the importance of the initiative, the Chief Secretary said technology will play a defining role in shaping the future economy and stressed the need to build future-ready human resources, infrastructure, and institutions.

He said the project will create new employment avenues for youth, strengthen the startup ecosystem and attract technology companies, positioning Jammu and Kashmir as an emerging hub for innovation and digital growth.

Dulloo directed the concerned departments to coordinate closely with IIT Jammu to ensure timely implementation of the project and development of a robust ecosystem for technology-led growth.
