NC protests assassination attempt on party president

Srinagar, Mar 12: National Conference (NC) Thursday held an emergency meeting at the party headquarters to strongly protest and condemn the assassination attempt on party president Farooq Abdullah, terming the incident a “grave and alarming attack” on democratic values.

The meeting was chaired by the party’s General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar and witnessed strong reactions from party leaders, who described the attempt on  Abdullah’s life as a dangerous conspiracy that demands an immediate and impartial investigation.

Speakers at the meeting asserted that targeting a senior national leader like Abdullah was not merely an attack on an individual but a direct assault on the democratic fabric of the country.

They warned that such incidents pose serious questions about security arrangements and urged authorities to identify and punish those responsible without delay.

On the occasion, the NC Provincial President Showkat Ahmad Mir moved a resolution condemning the assassination attempt.

The resolution, which was unanimously adopted by the participants, called for a comprehensive and transparent probe into the incident, including possible security lapses and negligence, so that the truth behind the conspiracy is brought before the public and similar incidents are prevented in the future.

NC leaders applauded Abdullah’s long political journey and democratic struggle, describing him as a visionary, farsighted, secular, and people-centric leader who has consistently championed communal harmony, brotherhood, and democratic values in the region.

They said that Abdullah has served three terms as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, held office as a Union Cabinet Minister, and has been elected to the Lok Sabha four times.

He has also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha and represented the country at important international forums, including the United Nations and conferences in Geneva.

The speakers said that in 1996, when Jammu and Kashmir was passing through one of its most turbulent periods with fear and uncertainty prevailing across the region, the administrative and educational systems severely disrupted, and people facing immense hardships, Abdullah demonstrated remarkable courage and leadership by stepping forward to assume responsibility and playing a decisive role in restoring the democratic process in the state.

The meeting also praised the security personnel and party office bearers and workers whose timely intervention helped save Abdullah’s life.

NC General Secretary, Ali Muhammad Sagar, Provincial President Advocate Showkat Ahmad Mir, senior leaders Mubarak Gul (MLA Eidgah), Shamima Firdous (MLA Habba Kadal), Ali Muhammad Dar (MLA Chadoora), Salman Ali Sagar (MLA Hazratbal), NC state spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar, Minority Cell Convenor Jagdish Singh Azad and Youth Provincial President Mushtaq Mir addressed the meeting.

Chief Spokesperson and MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq, Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi (MLA Gurez), Riyaz Bedar (MLA Pattan), Hilal Lone (MLA Sonawari), Women’s Wing Provincial President Engineer Sabiya Qadri, Provincial Secretary Syed Tawqeer Ahmad, District President Srinagar Peer Afaq Ahmad, District President Budgam Ghulam Nabi Bhat, Joint Secretary Ghulam Nabi Wani Talibali, and  Mohammad Saeed Makhdoomi were also present at the meeting.

At the conclusion of the meeting, party leaders and workers expressed complete solidarity with Abdullah and reaffirmed their resolve that the National Conference will continue its struggle for democracy, unity, and the rights of the people under his leadership.

Later the participants also registered a strong protest and demanded that the truth behind the conspiracy be brought before the public.

Meanwhile, party units across district, tehsil and block levels also strongly condemned the assassination attempt on the party president.

NC also staged a protest march in Jammu against the attack on its president and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah, demanding a thorough probe into the incident and “restoration of law and order”.

Carrying NC flags and placards reading “Restore law and order” and “Probe the firing incident”, hundreds of workers and leaders began their protest march from the party headquarters, Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan, in Jammu.

Raising slogans “We want justice” and “Farooq Abdullah zindabad”, the protesters marched towards the city centre.

The Police stopped them at Raghunath Bazaar, leading to a brief jostling as security personnel prevented them from moving ahead.

However, some protesters managed to move towards City Chowk, where they staged a brief dharna before dispersing.

Talking to reporters, former minister and senior NC leader Ajay Sadhotra termed the incident a “major security lapse”.

“They had gone to attend a wedding. Farooq Sahab, the deputy chief minister, and other senior leaders were present, but there was not even a single security person at the venue. How could a person carrying a weapon enter the premises if proper checking was being conducted?” he said.

Sadhotra said that the situation could have turned into a “major tragedy” if the personal security staff with Abdullah had not intervened in time.

“The attacker took out the pistol, but the security personnel behind Farooq Sahab immediately pulled him back and the shot went into the air,” he said.

He demanded that law and order be placed under the control of the chief minister so that the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir improves.

NC’s provincial president, Jammu region, Ratan Lal Gupta also condemned the attack, saying it raised serious concerns about the safety of political leaders.

“If a leader like Farooq Sahab is not safe, then what will happen to ordinary people? He has always advocated Hindu-Muslim unity and communal harmony,” Gupta said.

NC women’s wing leader Bilma Luthra said the protest was meant to highlight concerns over “deteriorating” law and order. “The purpose of our protest is that law and order should be strengthened and placed under Omar Sahab so that people can live in a safe environment,” she said.

NSG to undertake security audit of Z-plus category dignitaries

NSG to undertake security audit of Z-plus category dignitaries

New Delhi, Mar 12: The National Security Guard (NSG) will undertake a comprehensive security audit of all its Z-plus category high-risk VIPs following the assassination attempt on former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, officials said on Thursday.

The ‘Black Cats’ commando force currently provides elite protection to nine VIPs, including Abdullah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu.

Under standard operating procedures, the force provides mobile security during transit and deploys a specialised Close Protection Team (CPT) of four commandos when a dignitary is inside an indoor venue, such as a banquet hall or convention centre.

The officials told PTI that it is standard procedure to review or audit security measures whenever an “extraordinary incident” involves an NSG protectee.

“The security audit process will be initiated. While the NSG is tasked with the immediate safety of the protectee, it remains the responsibility of local police and other agencies to sanitise the venue and ensure no armed individuals gain entry,” an official said. Once the audit is finalised, the NSG will communicate its findings and highlight potential lapses to the relevant local police authorities.

Abdullah had a miraculous escape on Wednesday night when a gunman opened fire at him after coming from behind while the National Conference president was leaving a wedding function in Jammu. CCTV footage from the wedding event showed a police official and an NSG commando successfully intercepting the attacker, while a second commando and other security personnel pinned him to the ground.

The team immediately evacuated Abdullah from the venue in a high-speed convoy.

LG Manoj Sinha attends closing ceremony at MA Stadium in Jammu

Jammu, Mar 12: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday said that the peace we enjoy today, the peace that lets families gather, athletes compete, and communities thrive, did not come without a price.

“This peace was secured through the sacrifices of the J&K Police, the Army, and the CAPFs. Thousands of police personnel, soldiers, and CAPF Bravehearts gave their lives protecting the people of Jammu & Kashmir. Our duty is not just to remember them, but to ensure their sacrifice endures, preserving the peace they won,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor issued a stern warning to those who seek to destroy this peace: “You will find no place to hide. We will hunt you down from the deepest depths”.

The Lieutenant Governor, as per an official statement, was speaking at the closing ceremony of 2nd All India Police Kabaddi Cluster 2025-26 (Men & Women) at MA Stadium Jammu.

The Lieutenant Governor felicitated the sportspersons from State Police Forces and CAPFs participated in different sports disciplines including Kabaddi, Gymnastics, Fencing and Kho-Kho. He said the discipline, and determination displayed by the participants truly reflect the core values of policing.

“Sports have always bridged divides through their unmatched reliability. Language, geography, social status, rank, and authority fade away on the field. There, only courage and resolve matter. The sports ground binds us in a shared humanity.

This is an education possible only on the ground, and it has the power to shape the character of the young generation. Such sporting events carry another vital lesson: lasting public security, peace and prosperity is strengthened from trust and values,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

Lauding Jammu Kashmir Police, the Lieutenant Governor said that through the Civic Action Programme, the J&K Police has kept alive the conviction that we belong to community, that we care for youth, and that we believe in their future.

“The people here have always seen the Jammu & Kashmir Police as a guide, a mentor — an integral part of the community. These competitions are an expression of exactly that spirit,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

The Lieutenant Governor called upon the youth of Jammu Kashmir to recognize and fully seize the extraordinary potential of the Union Territory they have inherited.

“Dream big, with the health, freedom, and opportunities to make those dreams real,” the Lieutenant Governor said.

Emphasizing that a bright future requires a healthy foundation, the Lieutenant Governor urged the younger generation to stay vigilant against the menace of narcotics and lead a collective war against drugs.

“Sports teach the power of shared purpose: a dedicated team achieves what no individual can. These lessons extend beyond the field, forming the foundation of life’s greatest triumphs,” the Lieutenant Governor further said.

The Lieutenant Governor also felicitated the J&K cricket team on clinching their maiden Ranji trophy title. The Lieutenant Governor extended heartfelt congratulations to the champions for this landmark triumph.

Indian national killed in attack by Iran against US-owned oil tanker Safesea Vishnu in Iraqi waters

New York, Mar 12: An Indian national has reportedly been killed in an attack carried out by Iran using a “suicide” boat against a US-owned oil tanker near Iraq.

US-owned and Marshal Island-flagged oil tanker Safesea Vishnu was attacked off Khor Al Zubair port on Wednesday inside Iraq’s territorial waters by an Iranian “suicide” boat, sources told PTI.

An Indian national, whose name is being withheld at the moment, has reportedly been killed in the attack, while the remaining 27 crew and personnel on the oil tanker have been rescued and taken to Basra, the sources said.

Sources close to Safesea, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the company is devastated to learn of the loss of the Indian national in the attack.

They have called for the Indian government to strongly condemn the attack and take urgent action to ensure the safety of crew onboard ships in the region amid the escalating West Asia conflict.

The sources voiced concern that, as Indians constitute over 15 per cent of the seafarers globally, irrespective of whichever ship Iran targets, Indian nationals will be “collateral damage”.

Am safe by God’s grace: Farooq Abdullah

Am safe by God’s grace: Farooq Abdullah

Jammu, Mar 12: Hours after an abortive bid on his life, National Conference President and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah called him and assured action by means of thorough investigation into the incident (bid) and results soon.

The Home Minister asserted that he (Abullah) would be intimated about it (outcome of probe), the former chief minister said.

The NC president said that in response (to HM’s assurance), he hoped that they would be able to unravel truth.

“Yes, he (Union Home Minister) called me last night and asked about my well-being. I said – By God’s grace, I am safe. I remained unhurt. He told me that they had caught him (accused) and he would be thoroughly investigated. ‘Following it (investigation), you would be intimated about the incident or what exactly happened’ – Home Minister assured me,” Abdullah said.

He was responding to media queries at his Bhatindi residence during his first interaction, after surviving an assassination bid during a marriage ceremony at Greater Kailash in Jammu outskirts late Wednesday evening.

After the Union Home Minister assured him of action and results very soon, what exactly he (Abdullah) conveyed to him (HM) while talking to him, responding to this query, the NC president said, “I said to him- Thank you for calling and I hope that you will be able to get down to unravel it and I wished him well.”

When asked what exactly happened on Wednesday night and how it impacted him, the former chief minister thanked the Almighty, saying that he was absolutely fine as God saved him.

The NC president, then maintaining a cool demeanour, recalled moments when he had a close shave. “Following the arrival of the bride, we took permission from them (hosts) to leave. As I stepped out of Mandap (marriage venue) and started walking, I just heard the sound of a cracker. I presumed it was a firecracker as the bursting of fire-crackers during weddings was nothing unusual. Therefore, I imagined that probably a firecracker exploded by my side or behind me and that’s why I felt a burning sensation,” he said.

“By then they (security personnel and others) hurriedly put me in the vehicle. There, in the vehicle on the way home, they broke this news to me that the man was having a pistol and he had fired two shots (aiming at me). It so happened that before he could fire a second shot, our security personnel and others tried to overpower him (the accused). One of the security personnel tried to pull him (accused) away by grabbing his arm from behind. That made him (accused) destabilised and the pistol went up and it misfired. In the meanwhile, the security personnel overpowered him and took his pistol, however the (second) shot was already fired, though in the air,” the former chief minister said, drawing the verbal sketch of the spectre, when a bid was made in a startling turn of events where the man was able to reach just behind him.

Abdullah said that he only knew that much even after he reached his residence (at Bhatindi).

“I don’t know that man…Neither I know him nor aware about his antecedents…How could I know his intentions and what enmity he had against me? I’ve done no wrong, never nursed any ill-will against anyone. I never harmed anyone,” the NC president said, in response to a question about the statement made by the accused during Police interrogation that he had been preparing for the last 20 years to target him (Abdullah) because of some personal grouse.

He said that in fact, even when he was the chief minister, he went out of way to help a person whosoever approached him for any kind of assistance.

“I used to make extra efforts to redress the grievances of those in the opposition and I would shower more love and affection upon them (people in the opposition) than those from my party. I have never harboured a feeling of animosity or hatred in my heart against anyone. I don’t know what was his (accused’s) issue; reason for his enmity,” Abdullah said.

DID SECURITY LAPSE LEAD TO INCIDENT?

Was it (incident) a security lapse?

Faced with this query, the NC president did not mince words while pointing towards gaping holes on that account.

“If I say it’s a security lapse, that will be a big statement. Major question is that the majority of the guests in that wedding function were very high-profiled dignitaries. Keeping that fact in view, the Police should have made adequate security arrangements which were simply not in place. There was no arrangement of Police at the venue, not at all. All thanks to the Almighty that my security was there with me and also that of our ministers. Besides, our MLAs were there. They all showed exemplary courage and I was saved; left unhurt,” he said.

When asked if he (Farooq) too favoured a thorough investigation (as promised by the Union Home Minister), NC president said that it was up to them (Centre) but it should be definitely held to unravel the truth, reason behind the incident.

“See, not just for me, it (security) should have been there but many dignitaries had come to that wedding. Therefore, it was necessary to have protection at such an event. Especially in the prevailing circumstances where the hatred has become a predominant sentiment and its web has spread everywhere, such incidents keep happening. Thus, we all need to be extra cautious,” the former chief minister said.

He pointed out that the hatred had taken roots in the country. “No religion teaches hatred. All religions teach compassion and harmony, But the growing hatred had left no room for those promoting amity, peace and brotherhood,” Abdullah said.

ELECTED GOVERNMENT SANS POWER IN ABSENCE OF STATEHOOD

With regard to the accusation of the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge that such incidents were happening because J&K was deprived of its statehood, the NC president said that the (elected government) could be held responsible for the incident (bid), if the state had been restored to J&K.

“There is an elected government in place yet it has no power. How can it happen and how can it work? Elections were conducted and during elections, it was promised that the statehood would be restored and your grievances would be redressed. Now so many years have passed – Where is that statehood which was promised not just in the Parliament but also in the Supreme Court? In that case (had the statehood been restored), they could have pointed the finger at us,” Abdullah said.

Asked if crimes were increasing in Jammu and Kashmir due to the absence of statehood, he said, “Crimes are all pervasive and all across the country. Poverty is on rise. And in the prevailing scenario, in the backdrop of the Iran war, it will spiral up. Rising poverty and global developments would worsen economic conditions.

Not just poor but the middle class would also suffer due to rising prices.”

In the same breath, he called upon the Centre to use its good offices to end ongoing conflicts.

“I would request them as they share friendship with Donald Trump and also with Benjamin Netanyahu. For God’s sake, tell them to stop the war. It is necessary,” he said.

In response to a query about the role of his security personnel, Abdullah effusively praised his Special Security Group (SSG) and NSG cover for protecting him while risking their own lives.

“I don’t have words to appreciate and thank my security personnel,” he said.

Did the downgrading of his security result in such an incident? Responding to this query, Abdullah said, “Notwithstanding the elaborate security cover or an increase in security, the assassin always has an advantage. He exactly knows where he wants to target you and what he wants to do and when. So, security could not be the main issue.”

On whether the incident had a terror angle, the former chief minister said that he could not say anything on that account.

“I cannot point the finger at anyone. The terrorism is a global challenge. We live in an era where terrorism is up in the sky. It cannot be controlled as it too has become all pervasive,” the NC president said.

Responding to allegations by some leaders of his party that the attack on him indicated a political conspiracy, the former chief minister said if it was there, it would come to the fore following investigation.

“But in this scenario, I request the Centre and the Lieutenant Governor that when they repeatedly say the situation has completely improved, they should introspect and see if it has actually become safe enough for us to move around with dignity. There may be differences of opinion and that was intrinsic to a democracy,” he said.

“India’s strength lies in its secular and democratic character. We may disagree, but we all have to live together,” the three-time chief minister said.

In a related query, the NC president welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail to Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah. “That is a very welcome thing. I say that all others behind bars should be released. They should come out and help make this country better so that people can live here with dignity and humanity,” he said and in the same context, referred to the continued displacement of Kashmiri Pandits.

“They been living away from their homes for the last 34 years. The time has come for us to live together,” he said.

In response to a question about the justification of use of force by US-Israel to effect regime change in Iran, he quoted Jawahar Lal Nehru and Manmohan Singh to convey the point that it was to be decided by a sovereign nation itself. “Like Dr Manmohan Singh had said – India is a sovereign nation. What is in the interest of a sovereign nation, it will decide,” Abdullah said.

Ex-PM Manmohan Singh, Khaleda Zia among those included in Bangladesh parliament’s condolence motion

Ex-PM Manmohan Singh, Khaleda Zia among those included in Bangladesh parliament’s condolence motion

Dhaka, Mar 12: Bangladesh parliament on Thursday condoled the deaths of several national and international leaders, including former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh, Bangladesh’s Khaleda Zia and slain Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The maiden session of the 13th parliament adopted a motion to condole the deaths initially included 31 names, including late Pope Francis and Matia Chowdhury, a former parliamentarian and leader of deposed premier Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League.

However, after the main opposition Jamaat-e-Islami insisted, names of executed 1971 war criminals, tried as hardened collaborators of Pakistani troops during the country’s Liberation War, were also included in it.

The motion also included names of those killed during the July-August mass protests that toppled the Sheikh Hasina government in Aug 2024.

The newly elected speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, a veteran 1971 freedom fighter, agreed to incorporate the names of the executed war criminals as Jamaat claimed the initial list of names were “one sided.”

The motion with proposed expanded list included Jamaat’s hanged former chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, its senior leaders Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, Maulana Abdus Subhan, Abdul Quader Mollah, Mir Quasem Ali, and Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.

Sayeedi, however, died in prison while serving a prison term until his death while Subhan died a natural death.

A separate condolence proposal was raised for hanged Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury, who too was tried for 1971 war crimes siding with Pakistani troops to prevent Bangladesh’s 1971 independence.

BNP lawmaker and parliamentary Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni endorsed the names.

The first day of the parliament also saw a walkout and demonstration by the opposition over the president’s address even when his speech was, in line with the practice, prepared by the government.

The 13th parliament made its opening in an extraordinary manner by keeping the speaker’s chair vacant as the tradition demanded the outgoing speaker or in his/her absence deputy speaker would preside over the maiden session of the new Jatiya Sangsad.

Outgoing speaker Shirmin Sharmin Choudhury had resigned and remains in an undisclosed location after dissolution of the last parliament by Muhaammad Yunus-led interim regime, which sent deputy speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku to jail.

Bangladesh constitution demands the president to address the opening sitting of the new parliament but as President Mohammad Shahabuddin approached the house to deliver his speech, Jamaat MPs created uproar and walked out of the House.

Jamaat’s crucial ally National Citizen Party (NCP), on the other hand, staged demonstrations outside parliament, also targeting Shahabuddin.

NCP is led by those who spearheaded the 2024 street protest toppling the Awami League government. Jamaat, on Wednesday, had expressed strong reservation against the president’s address, calling Shahabuddin’s inaugural speech “unacceptable” since he was an “accomplice of the autocrat”, as he was elected to the post by the Awami League-led parliament.

“We think the President (Shahabuddin) does not have any right to address the parliament. He is an accomplice of the autocrat,” Jamaat’s nayeb-e-ameer or deputy chief Abdullah Mohammad Taher told another media briefing.

The BNP won with a two-thirds majority in the February 12 general elections while Jamaat emerged as the main opposition, a position the far-right party gained for the first time since its founding in 1941.

Forces recover 4 kg IED during search operation in Rajouri

Rajouri, Mar 12: Security forces recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) weighing around four kilograms during a joint search operation in the border area between Rajouri and Poonch districts, officials said on Thursday.

According to officials, alert troops of the White Knight Corps of the Indian Army launched a search operation on March 11 at around 4:45 pm in the area located on the boundary of Rajouri and Poonch districts.

During the operation, search parties recovered approximately four kilograms of explosives along with stale cooked food concealed inside a natural cave.

Officials said that the recovered explosives were destroyed on the spot as per standard operating procedures to ensure safety.

The recovery, officials added, reflects the continued operational vigilance and proactive efforts of security forces to neutralise terrorist logistics networks and dismantle potential hideouts in the region.

Security forces have further intensified the search operation in the area, and officials said that efforts to track down any possible militant presence are continuing.

No fuel shortage in country, says Oil Min Puri

No fuel shortage in country, says Oil Min Puri

New Delhi, Mar 12: The government on Thursday said there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, kerosene or aviation turbine fuel in the country despite the ongoing West Asia crisis, and urged the Opposition not to spread rumours and fake narratives.

Responding to concerns raised by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri said it is the foremost priority of the government that the kitchens of over 33 crore families, especially the poor and the underprivileged, do not face any shortage of gas.

Domestic supply is fully protected, and the delivery cycle is unchanged, he said.

“There is no shortage of petrol, diesel, kerosene, aviation turbine fuel or fuel oil. The availability of petrol, diesel, aviation turbine fuel, kerosene, and fuel oil is fully assured,” Puri said.

He noted that retail outlets across the country are stocked, supply chains for these products are functioning normally, and additional allocation of PDS (public distribution system) kerosene has been issued to all the states.

“This is not the moment for rumour-mongering or fake narratives. India is navigating the most severe global energy disruption in recorded history,” he said, adding that crude supply is flowing and gas is prioritised for homes and farms.

Gas is prioritised for homes and farms, and LPG (liquified petroleum gas) production has been stepped up by 28 per cent, the minister noted.

“Consumer prices are held far below what markets and regional comparators would dictate. Schools are open. Petrol is on the forecourt. Every citizen, regardless of political affiliation, has a stake in that,” he said.

“India must stand united behind its energy warriors, behind the institutions managing this crisis, and behind the national interest.”

Amid sloganeering by Opposition members, the minister said that due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s effective diplomatic outreach, India has secured crude volumes that exceed what the disrupted Strait of Hormuz route would have delivered in the same period.

Before this crisis, about 45 per cent of India’s crude imports transited the Hormuz route.

“Non-Hormuz sourcing has risen to approximately 70 per cent of crude imports, up from 55 per cent before the conflict began,” he said.

Puri informed that India sources crude from 40 countries, against 27 in 2006-07.

Refineries are operating at high capacity utilisation, and in several cases, they are exceeding 100 per cent.

“The world has not faced a moment like this in modern energy history,” he said.

Following the joint attack launched by the US and Israel on Iran on February 28, the Islamic nation has stopped the movement of oil and gas ships from the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 per cent of the world’s crude, natural gas and LPG flows.

The supply was disrupted following the military operation between Iran, Israel and the US, the minister said, adding that despite India having no role in causing the conflict, like many countries, India has to navigate through its consequences.

He said an Indian neighbour has shut all schools for two weeks, moved government offices to a four-day work week, ordered 50 per cent of public employees to work from home, cut fuel allowances for official vehicles by half, and taken 60 per cent of government vehicles off the road.

Another neighbour, he said, has closed universities early and brought forward the Eid al-Fitr holiday to save fuel.

Countries in Southeast Asia have also had to take energy rationing and conservation measures.

Meanwhile, non-Hormuz sourcing has also risen to about 70 per cent of crude imports, up from 55 per cent before the conflict began.

India was previously importing about 60 per cent of its LPG requirements from Gulf countries, such as Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait and 40 per cent is produced domestically.

He informed that the procurement has now been actively diversified, with cargoes being secured from the US, Norway, Canada, Algeria, and Russia, in addition to available Gulf sources.

The LPG Control Order issued on March 8 directed all refineries to maximise LPG yields.

“Hence, in the last five days, LPG production has been increased by 28 per cent through refinery directives, and further procurement is actively underway,” he said.

Puri said the standard time from booking to delivery for domestic LPG cylinders remains 2.5 days, unchanged from pre-crisis norms.

Hospitals and educational institutions have been placed on uninterrupted priority supply. Their access to LPG is fully assured regardless of broader demand conditions, the minister said, adding that field reports indicate hoarding and panic-booking at the distributor and retail level, driven by consumer anxiety rather than any actual supply shortage, the minister said.

“The House should be clear on this: the rush-booking pressure in some localities reflects a demand distortion, not a production or supply failure,” he said.

Delivery Authentication Code coverage is being expanded from 50 per cent to 90 per cent of consumers. Under this system, a cylinder can only be logged as delivered when the consumer confirms receipt through a one-time code on their registered mobile, making undocumented diversion effectively impossible to conceal, he added.

A 25-day minimum booking gap has been introduced as a demand management measure in urban areas and 45 days in rural and Durgam Kshetra (remote areas).

Further, he said commercial LPG has been regulated to prevent black marketing, not to penalise the hospitality sector.

Commercial LPG is sold in a completely deregulated, over-the-counter market at market price, without any government subsidy.

There is no registration system, no booking requirement, no digital authentication, and no delivery confirmation mechanism.

Any business or individual can purchase cylinders in any quantity at the point of sale, with no government control in normal times, he said.

“In a supply-constrained environment where public anxiety is elevated, this deregulated structure creates a direct and uncontrolled pathway for hoarding, diversion, and resale at inflated prices,” he said, adding that had commercial supply been left entirely unrestricted, cylinders purchased over the counter could have been diverted to the grey market at the expense of genuine commercial consumers and domestic households alike.

The government, he said, has taken the responsible course to regulate this channel with clear priorities and a transparent allocation mechanism.

He also said that alternative fuel options are being activated to ease pressure on LPG and gas channels. Kerosene is being made available through retail outlets and PDS channels, and fuel oil is being made available for industrial and commercial consumers.

Consumer prices, he said, have been shielded from global market conditions. Despite the Saudi contract price rising 41 per cent between July 2023 and March 2026, the PMUY beneficiary price has fallen 32 per cent in the same period and stands at Rs 613 per 14.2 kg cylinder in Delhi.

The non-subsidised consumer price stands at Rs 913, following the recent Rs 60 adjustment, against a market-determined price of about Rs 987, Puri noted.

Of the Rs 134 per cylinder adjustment required by prevailing global market conditions, the government absorbed Rs 74.

“The effective additional cost for a PMUY household is under 80 paise per day. Equivalent LPG prices in the neighbourhood stand at Rs 1,046 in Pakistan, Rs 1,242 in Sri Lanka, and Rs 1,208 in Nepal. OMC compensation of Rs 30,000 crore has been approved against losses of approximately Rs 40,000 crore in 2024-25,” he added.

He said consumer prices are held far below what markets and regional comparators would dictate.

Elements threat to peace will be hunted down from deepest depths: Lieutenant Governor

Jammu, Mar 12: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday issued a stern warning to elements inimical to peace, stating that elements threat to peace will find no place to hide and will be hunted down from the deepest depths.

He said that the peace we enjoy today, the peace that lets families gather, athletes compete, and communities thrive, did not come without a price.

The Lieutenant Governor was speaking at the closing ceremony of 2nd All India Police Kabaddi Cluster 2025-26 (Men & Women) at MA Stadium Jammu.
