Infiltration bid foiled in Keran sector: Army

Search and sanitisation operations continued through the day in the sensitive border area, with additional troops inducted to thoroughly comb the terrain.

According to Army, terrorists tried to sneak into the Valley under the cover of darkness.

Troops noticed suspicious movement near Jumagund in the early hours and challenged the infiltrators, leading to exchange of fire around 3 am.

The bid was thwarted, after which the Army launched an intensive search to check for any possible terrorist bodies or further presence in the area.

Keran sector in north Kashmir has long been a sensitive infiltration corridor along the roughly 740-km LoC. The Army maintains a multi-tiered anti-infiltration grid, including fencing, surveillance, and patrols, in the sector and other forward areas of Kupwara, Baramulla, and Bandipora.

While overall infiltration attempts have seen a marked decline in recent years, security forces remain on high alert, particularly ahead of the onset of winter when high passes become less passable.

The incident follows recent counter-infiltration successes, including the elimination of four terrorists — including a Lashkar-e-Toiba commander – in a mine blast in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch while attempting to cross the LoC days earlier.

Officials have repeatedly underlined that any attempt to disturb peace in the region will be met with a firm response.
