SKIMS MC&H performs first successful fetoreduction

Srinagar, May 2: In a significant medical milestone, Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Medical College and Hospital (MC&H) Bemina Friday successfully conducted its first fetoreduction procedure, marking a pioneering advancement in prenatal care and high-risk pregnancy management in the region.

A statement of the SKIMC MC&H issued here said that the complex and delicate procedure was carried out through seamless interdepartmental collaboration between the Departments of Radiodiagnosis and Gynaecology.

A team of specialists jointly performed the fetoreduction by reducing two fetuses in a quadruple pregnancy to two to lower the potential risks to the mother and enhance survival prospects for the remaining fetuses.

Head of the Department, Radiodiagnosis, described the procedure as a highly specialised intervention aimed at improving maternal and fetal outcomes in high-risk multiple gestations.

ìFetoreduction is performed in pregnancies involving triplets or more, where reducing the number of fetuses to twins can significantly improve both maternal safety and neonatal health outcomes,î he said.

He said that such procedures demand precision, clinical expertise, and careful planning, and their successful execution at SKIMS Bemina reflects the growing capabilities of the institution in advanced maternal-fetal medicine.

Principal SKIMS MC Bemina congratulated the teams involved and lauded the outcome as a ìlandmark achievementî in the hospitalís journey towards excellence.

ìThis milestone reinforces our commitment to providing patient-centred, high-quality healthcare, especially in complex and high-risk cases,î he said.

The successful fetoreduction not only highlights the clinical skill of the doctors involved but also sets a precedent for future advanced prenatal procedures in Jammu and Kashmir.
