The Hague, Feb 7: The International Criminal Court (ICC) condemned the sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump on Friday, urging its member states to defend the court’s independence. The court described the sanctions as an effort to “undermine its impartial and independent judicial work.”
The executive order, issued by the White House on Thursday, was a response to what it called “unjustified and groundless actions targeting the United States and its close ally Israel.” This referred to the ICC’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last year, accusing him of war crimes in Gaza.
In a statement, the Hague-based court expressed its firm disapproval, declaring that it “condemns the move.” The ICC reaffirmed its commitment to justice, pledging to continue its mission to provide justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of global atrocities.
The court further called on its 125 member states, civil society, and nations worldwide to unite for justice and human rights.
