New Delhi, Aug 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently held a conversation with Prof. Mohammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, reaffirming India’s steadfast support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh.

During the call, Prime Minister Modi expressed concerns regarding the safety and protection of minority communities, particularly Hindus, who have become increasingly vulnerable amidst the ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh.

The Prime Minister emphasized India’s continued commitment to assisting the people of Bangladesh through various developmental efforts. However, the primary focus of the discussion was on ensuring the safety of minority groups, who have faced growing risks following the recent changes in administration and during ongoing protests.

Modi urged the Interim Government to prioritize safeguarding all minority communities, especially Hindus, who have historically been victims of violence during politically turbulent periods in the country.

In response, Prof. Yunus assured Modi that the Interim Government is dedicated to ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of all minority groups in Bangladesh.

This assurance comes at a time when minority communities are feeling fearful and uncertain, especially in light of recent violent incidents that have led to significant property damage and loss of lives.

Prime Minister Modi also shared his views on the matter in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating: “I received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, @ChiefAdviserGoB. We discussed the prevailing situation. I reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh. He assured the protection, safety, and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh.”

India has long expressed concerns about the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh, and recent events have intensified these concerns.

While Prof. Yunus’ reassurance is a positive development, the actual implementation of protective measures will be the true measure of the Interim Government’s commitment.
