World leaders listen when Modi speaks: RSS chief

Pune, Dec 2: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat Tuesday said world leaders listen carefully when Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks and this is happening because India’s strength is getting manifested and the country is finding its rightful place.

Speaking at an event organised in Pune on Monday to mark 100 years of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Bhagwat suggested one should not look forward to celebrating milestones like jubilees or centenaries, but aim to complete the given task within the stipulated time. “That is what the Sangh has been doing.Though the Sangh has completed 100 years, braving challenges and weathering many storms, it is time to introspect why the task of uniting the entire society has taken so long,” he told the gathering. It is generally believed that when India rises, global problems get resolved, conflicts diminish, and peace prevails, the RSS leader opined. “This is recorded in history, and we must recreate it. This is the need of the hour. The current global situation demands this from India.

High level BJP delegation meets Union Health Minister; raises concern over SMVD Hospital MBBS admission issue

New Delhi, Dec 02: A high-level delegation of the Jammu and Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party today called on Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare J P Nadda in New Delhi to discuss the growing concerns over the recent MBBS admissions at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), Katra, an institution run by the Shri Mama Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.

The delegation comprised Union MoS (PMO) Dr Jitendra Singh, J&K BJP President & MP (Rajya Sabha) Sat Sharma, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, MPs Jugal Kishore Sharma and Ghulam Ali Khatana, and MLAs Dr. Devinder Manyal, Sham Lal Sharma and R. S. Pathania.

The leaders apprised the Union Minister of the widespread public concern and emotional disquiet over the composition of the first batch of MBBS admissions, which has led to deep unease among devotees, stakeholders and civil society groups associated with the Shrine and its institutions.

The delegation further informed that multiple social and religious organisations have initiated peaceful protests, seeking transparency and clarity in the admission process, and cautioned that if left unresolved, the issue could escalate into a wider public agitation, disturbing the otherwise peaceful atmosphere of the region.

While reiterating full faith in the constitutional, merit-based and legally mandated framework of medical admissions, the delegation identified three core issues that lie at the root of the current controversy – the chronology in which the Medical College was sanctioned, planned and pushed through various stages of approval has also come under scrutiny, enactment of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Act, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Act.

In this context, the delegation urged the Union Health Minister to appreciate the extraordinary sensitivity, emotional quotient and spiritual significance related to the Shrine and its institutions, and to intervene in a manner that balances constitutional values, legal compliance and public trust.

They appealed for a comprehensive review of the entire process, increased transparency and consideration of mechanisms that can restore confidence among devotees and stakeholders, while remaining fully aligned with national medical education norms.

Union Health Minister J P Nadda gave the delegation a patient and detailed hearing and assured them that the matter would be examined with due seriousness, sensitivity and in strict adherence to established norms and laws. He assured that all relevant aspects would be looked into and appropriate steps taken to address the concerns raised.

The Jammu and Kashmir BJP leaders expressed confidence that the Union Government will act in a timely, fair, balanced and lawful manner to arrive at an outcome that is both just and acceptable to the people.

NIA special court extends police custody of Red Fort blast accused Amir Rashid Ali for 7 more days

New Delhi, Dec 02: A Delhi court on Tuesday extended the police custody of Amir Rashid Ali, a Jammu and Kashmir resident accused of facilitating the Red Fort blast, for seven more days.

On November 26, he was sent to a seven-day NIA custody ahead of the expiry of his 10-day remand on November 27.

Ali, arrested on November 16 in connection with the Red Fort blast, was produced before the Principal District and Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna on Tuesday.

The NIA has previously arrested seven people associated with this case. The matter is linked to a “white collar” terror module that was unearthed by the Jammu and Kashmir police.

On November 10, 15 people were killed in an explosion near Red Fort in Delhi. More than two dozen people were injured in the blast caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) inside a Hyundai i20 car driven by an alleged suicide bomber, Umar Un Nabi. The car was found to be registered under the name of Amir Rashid Ali.

“Amir had come to Delhi to facilitate the purchase of the car which was eventually used as a vehicle-borne Improvised Explosive Device to trigger the blast”, the NIA had previously disclosed in a statement.

The agency had confirmed the identity of the deceased driver to be Umar Un Nabi, a resident of Pulwama district and Assistant Professor in the General Medicine department of Al-Falah University, Faridabad.

The agency has also seized another vehicle belonging to Nabi that is currently being examined for evidence in the case. The NIA has so far examined 73 witnesses, including those injured in the blast.

SC questions legal status of Rohingyas, asks can intruders be given red carpet welcome

SC questions legal status of Rohingyas, asks can intruders be given red carpet welcome

New Delhi, Dec 02: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sharply questioned the legal status of Rohingyas living in India and asked whether “intruders” should be given a “red carpet welcome” while the country’s own citizens grapple with poverty.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi made sharp observations while hearing a habeas corpus (bring the person) petition filed by rights activist Rita Manchanda alleging disappearance of few Rohingyas from the custody of authorities here.

Now, the hearing in the case has been adjourned to December 16.

The counsel alleged certain Rohingyas were picked up by Delhi Police in May and there was no information about their whereabouts.

“If they do not have legal status to stay in India, and you are an intruder, we have a very sensitive border in the north India side. If an intruder comes, do we give them a red carpet welcome saying we would like to give you all facilities” the CJI asked, adding, “What is the problem in sending them back.”

He said India is a country with a lot of poor people, and we should rather focus on them.

“First you enter, you cross the border illegally. You dug a tunnel or crossed the fence and entered India illegally. Then you say, now that I have entered, your laws must apply to me and say, I am entitled to food, I am entitled to shelter, my children are entitled to education. Do we want to stretch the law like this,” the CJI asked.

The petitioner referred to an apex court order of 2020 in which it was said that Rohingyas must be deported only according to procedure.

“We also have poor people in the country. They are citizens. Are they not entitled to certain benefits and amenities? Why not concentrate on them? It is true, even if somebody has entered illegally, we should not subject them to third-degree methods…You are asking writ of habeas to bring them back,” CJI Kant asked.

The bench said if repatriation is sought then it may give rise to “logistical issues”.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, said the plea has not been filed by an affected person and the petitioner has no locus to file such a plea.

On July 31, the top court, while hearing a batch of pleas concerning Rohingyas in the country, had said the first major issue to be dealt with in cases concerning Rohingyas is whether they are refugees or illegal entrants.

It said once that is decided, the other issues might be consequential.

“The first major issue is simple, are they refugees or illegal entrants,” Justice Kant observed.

The bench took note of the broad issues that arose for its consideration in the pleas relating to Rohingyas.

“Whether the Rohingyas are entitled to be declared as refugees? If so, what protections, privileges or rights are they entitled to,” the bench asked.

It said the second issue is if the Rohingyas are not refugees and are illegal entrants, whether the action of the Centre and states in deporting them was justified.

“Even if the Rohingyas have been held to be illegal entrants, can they be detained indefinitely or they are entitled to be released on bail, subject to such conditions as the court may deem fit to be imposed,” it asked.

The court said the other issue raised in the petitions is whether the Rohingyas, who have not been detained and are living in refugee camps, have been provided basic amenities like drinking water, sanitation and education.

“If the Rohingyas are illegal entrants, whether the government of India and the states are obligated to deport them in accordance with law,” it noted.

The bench segregated the pleas in three groups — one relating to Rohingyas, another not pertaining to the issue of Rohingyas and one plea that it said pertains to a different matter altogether.

It said the three groups of matters would be determined separately and it would fix those for hearing on consecutive Wednesdays.

The bench indicated that on the point of those who were found to be illegal entrants and on the question of the State’s responsibility to deport them, it could only lay down the principles.

On May 16, the apex court had rapped some petitioners who had claimed that 43 Rohingya refugees, including women and children, were dropped in the Andaman sea for deportation to Myanmar and said “when the country is passing through a difficult time, you come out with fanciful ideas”.

It had questioned the authenticity of the material placed before it by petitioner Mohammad Ismail and others and refused to stay any further deportation of Rohingyas, saying a similar relief was denied by the court earlier.

On May 8, the top court had said if the Rohingya refugees in the country were found to be foreigners under Indian laws, they would have to be deported.

The court had then referred to its earlier order and remarked that the identity cards issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) may not be of any help to them under the laws.

India never provokes, but do not leave evil-doers: Rajnath Singh

Ahmedabad, Dec 02: Sending a strong message to its western neighbour, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday that India is a peace-loving nation and does not provoke anyone, but is prepared to eliminate anyone who disturbs peace and harmony in the country.

“India is a peace-loving nation. We provoke no one. But if provoked, we do not spare anyone who casts an evil eye on our motherland,” said the Defence Minister, in a stern warning to Pakistan, while speaking at a Sardar Sabha event in Vadodara during the ‘Unity March’ organised by MY Bharat to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Vallabhbhai Patel.

The Defence Minister said that Operation Sindoor stands as decisive proof that India gives a befitting reply to those who do not understand the language of peace and goodwill.

He further praised the armed Forces for the successful operation, noting that the world now acknowledges their courage and capability.

Rajnath Singh also compared India’s firm action against terrorism to Patel’s uncompromising leadership during the integration of Hyderabad.

The Union minister pointed out that Patel’s vision of ‘One India, Best India’ has been strengthened under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the abrogation of Article 370 as a decisive step in integrating Jammu & Kashmir with the national mainstream.

He added that a once-hesitant India now speaks with confidence on global platforms, reflecting its rise as a major economic and strategic power.

Tracing the country’s economic climb from the 11th position in 2014 to the 4th today, Singh credited the Union government’s model of ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’.

He said the Union is weaving India together through cultural, social, spiritual and economic unity, moving towards the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.

On defence, Singh said the government is advancing Patel’s emphasis on modernisation, while pointing out the sharp rise in defence exports, 34 times higher in the past 11 years, and reiterated the target of achieving Rs 3 lakh crore in defence production and Rs 50,000 crore in exports by 2029 under the Make-in-India push.

He also underlined the government’s push for accountability through the proposed Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, which mandates that officials arrested on serious charges and denied bail within 30 days automatically lose their position.

Urging young Indians to uphold unity and integrity, Singh said the responsibility of protecting the nation’s sovereignty lies with the next generation.

“We must not only embrace the values of Patel but also prepare future generations to live by them,” he said.

CBI seeks custody of suspect

CBI seeks custody of suspect

Jammu, Dec 02: The CBI on Tuesday sought the custody of Shafat Ahmed Shangloo, arrested in the 35-year-old case relating to the kidnapping of Rubaiyya Sayeed, in the TADA court in Jammu.

Shangloo was arrested on Monday. He carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh, in connection with the sensational 1989 kidnapping of Sayeed, daughter of the then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, for allegedly being part of a conspiracy hatched by members of the banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). Shangloo is alleged to be a close confidant of JKLF chief Yasin Malik.

“He was produced before the special TADA court. We have sought custody of the accused,” CBI lawyer S K Bhat said.

He said the order of the court is awaited.

In a statement, the CBI said Shangloo conspired with Malik and others in committing offences under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code and the TADA Act in 1989.

“The absconder was carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head and was produced before the TADA Court in Jammu within the stipulated time as per law,” CBI’s spokesperson said.

According to officials, Shangloo was allegedly an office-bearer of JKLF and handled its finances.

The CBI, along with Jammu and Kashmir Police, arrested Shangloo from his residence in the Nishat area of Srinagar.

Malik, who is serving a jail term in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in a terror funding case, is not being produced physically in court due to a Ministry of Home Affairs order restricting his movement.

During the court hearings, Sayeed had identified four other accused, besides Malik, as being involved in the crime.

She was abducted from near Lal Ded Hospital in Srinagar on December 8, 1989, and was freed five days later after the then V P Singh government, which was supported by the BJP at the Centre, released five terrorists in exchange.

Now living in Tamil Nadu, Sayeed is listed as a prosecution witness by the CBI, which took over the investigation in 1990.

In order to expedite the trial, the CBI had appointed its senior counsel Monika Kohli as the chief prosecutor after framing charges against Malik in the much-publicised cases related to the Sayeed’s abduction and killing of four IAF personnel in Srinagar more than three decades ago.

Malik, 56, was sentenced by a special NIA court in May last year. He was arrested in early 2019 in connection with the 2017 terror-funding case registered by the NIA.

A special TADA court has already framed charges against Malik and nine others in the kidnapping case.

High Court allows PDP leader Waheed Para to travel in country

Srinagar, Dec 02: After four years, People’s Democratic Party leader Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, accused in a terror conspiracy case, was granted permission to travel within the country by the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court on Tuesday.

Para was granted bail by a division bench of the High Court in May 2022 on a surety of Rs 1 lakh with directions to be present before the investigating officer as and when required, and to surrender his passport and not leave the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir without the prior permission of the trial court.

Para had moved an application for allowing relaxation of the condition for travel outside Jammu and Kashmir.

On Tuesday, a bench comprising Justices Vinod Chatterji Koul and Sanjeev Kumar allowed him to travel within the country after informing the trial court.

“…the petitioner (Para) shall be entitled to leave the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and move within the country after intimating his location and purpose of visit to the trial court,” the High Court said in its two-page order.

Advocate Shariq J Reyaz submitted before the court that Para was an MLA and has to move out of the Union Territory time and again in connection with his official and other duties, and this bail condition is creating a lot of hardship and inconvenience to him.

The court said in its order that “…we are of the considered opinion that it would be in the interest of justice to modify the condition…”

Para was arrested by the NIA in November 2020 in connection with a case for allegedly supporting the Hizbul Mujahideen terror outfit, a charge denied by the PDP, which had termed his arrest as “politically motivated”.

He got bail in January 2021, but before he could walk out of jail, the Jammu and Kashmir police arrested him.

While granting him bail in 2022, the High Court had said that the evidence assembled by the investigating agency and relied upon by the prosecution to prosecute him “is too sketchy to be believed prima facie true”.

Operation Sindoor remains in progress: Navy chief

New Delhi, Dec 2: Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi on Tuesday said his force’s aggressive posturing during Operation Sindoor in May forced Pakistan Navy to remain close to their ports.

In his annual press conference, Admiral Tripathi also said that the Indian Navy maintained a high operational readiness, including in the Western Arabian sea, in the last seven-eight months following the hostilities with Pakistan.

The Navy chief, without elaborating, said Operation Sindoor “remains in progress”. “The aggressive posturing and immediate action during Operation Sindoor, including deployment of the carrier battle group forced Pakistan Navy to remain close to their ports or near the Makran coast,” he said.

The Navy chief said Operation Sindoor has put financial strain on Pakistan as significant number of merchant ships avoided travelling to that country following the hostilities.

The cost of insurance for the vessels to travel to Pakistan had also gone up, he said.
