Develop skills, don’t rely on tech alone for Jobs

Develop skills, don’t rely on tech alone for Jobs

Srinagar, Aug 06: As artificial intelligence continues to transform industries at breakneck speed, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has cautioned Gen Z that basic familiarity with AI tools won’t be enough to ensure job stability. While Gates acknowledges that AI can be “exciting and empowering,” he also points to its disruptive impact—especially on entry-level positions that are rapidly being replaced by automation.

“Embracing [AI], and tracking it, will be very, very important,” Gates said. “That doesn’t guarantee we’re not going to have a lot of dislocation.”

Despite growing emphasis on AI skills, many recent graduates are finding it increasingly difficult to break into the job market, which is becoming more competitive and less forgiving. Gates urges young professionals to stay curious and open to innovation, but he admits that even adaptability may not fully protect them from job displacement.

The unemployment rate for recent college grads has climbed above 6% over the past 12 months ending in May, while the overall national unemployment rate hovers around 4%.

AI replacing entry-level work is already being felt across all industries. At global investment firm Carlyle, previous entry-level hires who evaluated deals used to turn to Google for articles and request documents manually. Now the work is being done by AI, and the firm is shifting toward hiring junior-level employees who can ensure the work is accurate.

With companies leaning more heavily on automation, traditional entry-level roles that once served as stepping stones are disappearing—leaving many newcomers without a clear path forward. For Gen Z entering the workforce, the career game is shifting. In times of economic uncertainty, many younger workers are reveling in the security of blue-collar work and roles rooted in human connection like education or social work, creativity, and skill work.

Gold rises Rs 200 to Rs 99,020/10 g; silver climbs Rs 500

Gold halts record rally, drops Rs 2,400 to Rs 99,200 per 10 g amid easing US-China tensions

New Delhi, Aug 06: Gold prices rose Rs 200 to Rs 99,020 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday due to continuous buying by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had finished at Rs 98,820 per 10 grams in the previous market session.

In the national capital, gold of 99.5 per cent purity increased Rs 100 to Rs 98,600 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Wednesday. It had closed at Rs 98,500 per 10 grams on Tuesday.

“Gold traded with a moderate positive bias on Wednesday as safe-haven demand continued to push precious metals higher,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst, Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday issued fresh tariff threats on pharmaceutical imports. He said the tariffs would start off small but could rise up to 250 per cent over time.

Additionally, Trump indicated that an announcement regarding tariffs on semiconductors and chips would be forthcoming.

“This tariff-related uncertainty added a risk premium on precious metals,” Gandhi said.

As per Sarafa Association, silver prices climbed Rs 500 to Rs 1,12,500 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Wednesday. The white metal had ended at Rs 1,12,000 per kg in the previous market close.

Traders will monitor speeches by Federal Reserve members later in the day, which will provide further guidance on the trajectory of the bullion prices, he added.

Spot gold slipped USD 17.51 or 0.52 per cent to USD 3,363.35 per ounce in New York.

“Gold prices were weak as price as the precious metal prices in the international markets saw weak cues below USD 3,360 per ounce with dollar index showed positive rally in last few days,” Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said.

On the international front, spot silver fell 0.12 per cent to USD 37.76 per ounce.

“Trade tensions continue to escalate as President Trump has threatened to impose tariffs of up to 35 per cent on the EU, if they fail to meet their commitments.

“Meanwhile, investors are closely monitoring US trade negotiations with other countries, as any new tariffs could further weigh on the economy, driving inflation higher, and in turn, support gold prices,” Abans Financial Services CEO Chintan Mehta said.

60% faculty posts vacant at JK's Baba Ghulam university, overburdened junior professors hold fort

Jammu, Aug 06: Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district is grappling with a severe faculty crisis, with 60.4 per cent of the sanctioned teaching posts, including all 22 posts of professors, lying vacant.

The shortfall has left junior faculty members overburdened, significantly impacting the quality of education, RTI activist Raman Kumar Sharma said on Wednesday.

Sharma filed an RTI application in February seeking details of vacant sanctioned posts at the university. He received a response from the university on Tuesday.

In a telling sign of the academic strain, the university’s response stated that 80 assistant professors (stage II and III and scale I), 17 lecturers and one teaching assistant are currently running the show, holding together the teaching system in the absence of the senior faculty, including all 22 professors.

Sharing further details of the response, Kumar said 48 of the 50 associate professor posts and 72 of the 82 assistant professor posts are vacant. The university is functioning with a handful of junior teaching staff, he said.

He said the faculty shortfall stands at 60.4 per cent, with 142 out of the 235 sanctioned teaching posts lying vacant.

Out of the remaining 358 posts, 87, including that of four principals and one controller of examination, are vacant, straining the university’s administrative functioning.

Kumar said the university has four sanctioned posts of principals, two posts of assistant registrars, one each post of controller of examination, assistant registrar (finance), medical officer, executive engineer and assistant director (sports) — all of which are also unfilled.

Out of the 17 posts of tutors, 15 are vacant, while 12 of the 18 posts of attendant/receptionist remain unfilled. Three posts each of laboratory technicians and laboratory assistants are also vacant, he said.

Three posts of junior assistants, one post each of coordinator of regional offices at Srinagar and Kishtwar, senior library assistant, assistant security officer, placement assistant and extension scientist and 19 general duty helpers are also vacant, the document stated.
