Doctors at Noora Hospital perform rare life-saving keyhole surgery for Complex Diaphragmatic Hernia

In a remarkable achievement in emergency minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Imran Abdullah Khan, along with the anaesthesia team headed by Dr Showkat Dar at Noora Hospital, successfully performed a life-saving emergency laparoscopic repair of an incarcerated left diaphragmatic hernia with gastric volvulus and impending gangrene—an exceptionally rare and highly challenging surgical emergency.

As per a press release issued by the hospital, the patient was admitted in critical condition after multiple abdominal organs had migrated into the left side of the chest through a diaphragmatic defect.

The herniated organs included the stomach, greater omentum, transverse colon, splenic flexure, spleen, and the body and tail of the pancreas.

The stomach had twisted on itself (gastric volvulus), leading to severe distension with pre-gangrenous changes, placing the patient’s life at immediate risk.

“Despite the extraordinary complexity of the case, the surgical team at Noora Hospital successfully completed the entire procedure using advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. All herniated organs were meticulously reduced into the abdominal cavity, the twisted stomach was restored to its normal position and assessed for viability, and the diaphragmatic defect was repaired and reinforced, avoiding the need for a large open incision,” it added.

The patient made an excellent postoperative recovery and was discharged in stable condition.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Imran Abdullah Khan said, “Such cases are exceedingly rare and represent one of the most challenging emergencies in gastrointestinal and minimally invasive surgery. Timely diagnosis, prompt intervention, and coordinated teamwork are essential for a successful outcome.”

The successful management of this rare case at Noora Hospital reflects the growing expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery and demonstrates that even the most complex surgical emergencies can be managed safely through minimally invasive techniques in experienced hands.

The hospital administration appreciated the dedicated efforts of the surgical, anaesthesia, nursing, and critical care teams in achieving this outstanding patient outcome, reaffirming Noora Hospital’s commitment to delivering advanced, patient-centered surgical care.
