Catherine Connolly wins Ireland's presidential election

London, Oct 26: Independent politician Catherine Connolly has won Ireland’s presidential election and will serve as the country’s 10th president after receiving 63.36 per cent of first preference votes, according to official results released.

The 68-year-old candidate, backed by several left-wing parties including Sinn Fein, competed with Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys, a former government minister, in the election that kicked off on Friday.

The results, announced on Saturday evening (local time), show a landslide for Connolly, as was predicted by opinion polls, with 914,143 first preference votes. Humphreys, who won 29.46 per cent of first preference votes, has congratulated Connolly on becoming “a president for all of us” on Saturday afternoon, before the full results were released.

A third candidate on the ballot, the Fianna Fail-backed Jim Gavin, withdrew from the race earlier in October following a controversy over a rental dispute, reports Xinhua news agency.

Connolly has served as a member of parliament for the Galway West constituency since 2016, and previously worked as a psychologist and barrister.

She became the deputy speaker of the parliament’s lower house in 2020, the first woman ever to hold the post.

Connolly will be sworn in to succeed incumbent President Michael D. Higgins, who is set to complete the second of his two consecutive seven-year terms in November.

After winning the elections, she said, “My message is use your voice in every way you can, because a republic and a democracy need constructive questioning, and together we can shape a new republic that values everybody.”

Meet Shopian’s progressive farmer growing indoor, outdoor Saffron

Meet Shopian’s progressive farmer growing indoor, outdoor Saffron

Shopian, Oct 25: In an inspiring example of innovation and dedication, a progressive farmer from South Kashmir’s Shopian district has successfully cultivated both indoor and outdoor saffron, breaking traditional barriers and setting a new benchmark for sustainable farming practices in the region.

Haroon Rashid, 57, a resident of Vehil village in Shopian, has transformed his passion for farming into a model of agricultural innovation. From growing vegetables and fruits on the rooftop of his house to cultivating the world’s most precious spice indoors, Haroon’s efforts are earning him recognition as a trendsetter among local growers.

Haroon said he began experimenting with rooftop farming a few years ago. “Initially, I started growing different kinds of vegetables, fruits and even medicinal plants on the slab of my two-storey house. The results were encouraging,” he said.

“I have been now growing saffron both indoor and outdoor from last several last few years and with each passing year, the quality of crop and results are getting better,” he said

He credited the horticulture and agriculture departments for their consistent guidance and technical support. “Whenever I faced any challenge, officials from these departments were always ready to help. Their motivation kept me going,” he added.

He learned about indoor saffron farming a few years ago from experts at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Balpora, Shopian and the India International Kashmir Saffron Trade Centre (IIKSTC) Dusoo, Pampore. With their guidance, he decided to give it a try and the results exceeded expectations and he is further progressing with each year.

Haroon took a step further later and began cultivating outdoor saffron using hydroponic techniques, a method that allows plants to grow without soil by using nutrient-rich water. “Both indoor and outdoor saffron have shown excellent results. This year, the yield and quality have improved even more compared to last year as every year gives you new experience,” he said.

“Outdoor saffron, though grown on a smaller scale, has started flowering this year, while the indoor crop is already in full bloom. We are getting better yields with each passing season,” Haroon added.

He believes indoor saffron cultivation could revolutionize the sector, especially in the wake of changing climatic conditions that have been affecting traditional saffron fields. “Indoor saffron eliminates all weather-related risks. Even people without land can now grow saffron in their homes. It’s a big opportunity for young entrepreneurs and small farmers,” he said.

Haroon’s success story, he says, is built on hard work, guidance and innovation. “Where there is a will, there is a way. Farmers should take full advantage of government schemes, seek advice from experts, and adopt new technologies. This is how we can become self-reliant and successful,” he emphasized.

Agriculture officials also see immense potential in Haroon’s approach. “Climate change has started impacting traditional saffron cultivation. Earlier, saffron didn’t need irrigation, but now it does. Under such circumstances, indoor saffron can play a vital role in maintaining production and meeting market demand,” said an official from the agriculture department.

With every passing year, Haroon’s indoor and outdoor saffron fields are yielding better results—demonstrating that innovation, when combined with determination and proper guidance, can truly redefine Kashmir’s farming landscape—(KNO)

47th ASEAN Summit begins in Malaysia; PM Modi to join virtually

Kuala Lumpur, Oct 26: The 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and related summits began in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not travel to Malaysia but instead attend the ASEAN summit virtually on Sunday.

In a social media post on Thursday, PM Modi said that he held a conversation with his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim and congratulated him on Malaysia assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship.

The Prime Minister also conveyed his wishes for the success of the upcoming Summits and reaffirmed his commitment to further deepening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will host leaders from ASEAN member states, along with top officials from the US, China, Japan, South Korea, and other key partners, for the three-day summit held from October 26-28.

More than 30 heads of state and government from the 10 member states of the association, commonly referred to as ASEAN, are invited.

Among the invitees from outside the bloc is US President Donald Trump.

More than 10,000 police officers have been deployed to the Malaysian capital to secure the meetings, which begin on Sunday and run through Tuesday.

Trump will attend a dinner with ASEAN leaders and is expected to witness the signing of a peace accord between Cambodia and Thailand, following deadly border clashes in July that ended after Anwar mediated a ceasefire.

Among those attending are South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Japan’s first female Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon are also taking part.

From ASEAN, Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and Timor-Leste’s President Jose Ramos-Horta are among those expected.

Timor-Leste, or East Timor, is set to officially become the bloc’s 11th member during the summit.

Representatives from the UN, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and other global organisations, are also expected to attend, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join the meetings virtually. European Council President Antonio Costa will also be among the attendees.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Myanmar’s acting President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing will not attend. Russia will instead be represented by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.

ASEAN has decided not to extend an invitation to participate in summits to Myanmar’s military leadership since the February 2021 coup.

In addition to internal meetings, ASEAN will hold summit-level discussions with key dialogue partners, including the US, China, and Japan.

ASEAN, a regional organisation founded in Bangkok on August 8, 1967, consists of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar, who is hosting the summit, has expressed expectations that the ASEAN meetings will result in “positive” outcomes, with Trump’s tariffs on US allies and foes being a central topic.

On regional trade, Anwar has emphasised the importance of the world’s largest trade deal — the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) — which includes China, as it covers nearly one-third of global GDP and trade.

He has expressed Malaysia’s hopes to expand RCEP membership and explore ways to enhance trade.

The plight of one of the world’s most persecuted communities, the Rohingya in Myanmar, which is witnessing internal ethnic strife, will also be on the agenda alongside possible discussions regarding the tensions in the disputed South China Sea.

ASEAN is additionally expected to issue a statement on the situation in Gaza, where a ceasefire between Israeli forces and Hamas has been in place since October 10.

The ASEAN summit will discuss pressing issues like US tariffs and access to rare earth minerals, which are essential to high-tech manufacturing and whose production is dominated by China.

Trump launched his “Liberation Day Tariffs” in April against most US trading partners in a bid to lower the US trade deficit. After much negotiation, US tariffs for most ASEAN countries range from 10 to 20 per cent while Brunei’s tariff rate is 25 per cent. Tariffs for Laos and Myanmar are both 40 per cent.

In response to Trump’s tariffs, China has tightened export restrictions on rare earths, a move that has been felt around the world.

Attendees are also expected to discuss pressing issues like Myanmar’s civil war and the proliferation of scam centres in Southeast Asia, which have earned criminal networks tens of billions of dollars.

Sonu Nigam’s Srinagar concert will boost tourism and local artistes: LG Manoj Sinha

Srinagar, Oct 26: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has said that Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam’s live concert in Srinagar would give a major fillip to the Union Territory’s tourism sector and provide a valuable platform for local artistes to showcase their talent before a wider audience.

The Lieutenant Governor’s remarks came as the city geared up for the high-profile concert, expected to draw large crowds and highlight Kashmir’s growing appeal as a cultural and tourist hub, with less than 20 hours left for the event to begin.

Sinha praised NDTV Good Times for hosting a star-studded concert in Srinagar featuring Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam, calling it a major boost for local artistes and the Union Territory’s thriving tourism sector.

Speaking to NDTV in Srinagar, the LG Sinha said, “I would like to thank NDTV that Sonu Nigam jaisey kalakaar Srinagar aa rahe hain. Sthanik kalakaaron ko NDTV ne avsar diya hai. Inki charcha poori valley mein hai, aur mujhe lagta hai bohot saare log is karyakram ko dekhne aur sunne aayenge.”

Commenting on the Amarnath Yatra and recent challenges, the LG said, “Despite the terror attack in Pahalgam and subsequent natural issues like landslides, the tourism sector revived strongly later. I hope your concert will further boost tourism.”

Sinha also acknowledged the contribution of Bollywood and local talent in promoting Kashmir’s cultural identity. “The local artistes are very talented. I hope they get opportunities and platforms to showcase their skills to the world,” he said.

Trump warns Hamas to return bodies of Israeli hostages, says he is ‘watching very closely’ over next 48 hours

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

Washington, Oct 26: US President Donald Trump has issued a warning to Hamas, demanding the group begin returning the bodies of the deceased hostages quickly and said that Arab nations involved in peace efforts would “take action” if Hamas fails to comply.

“Hamas is going to have to start returning the bodies of the deceased hostages, including two Americans, quickly, or the other Countries involved in this GREAT PEACE will take action. Some of the bodies are hard to reach, but others they can return now and, for some reason, they are not,” Trump wrote late Saturday evening on Truth Social.

“Let’s see what they do over the next 48 hours. I am watching this very closely,” the President added.

While all the living hostages have been returned from Gaza, the remains of 13 deceased hostages have not been handed over by Hamas.

“Some of the bodies are hard to reach, but others they can return now and, for some reason, they are not,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

“Perhaps it has to do with their disarming, but when I said, ‘Both sides would be treated fairly,’ that only applies if they comply with their obligations.”

Hours before Trump’s social media post, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee met with the families of Itay Chen and Omer Neutra, two US citizens who were killed in the October 7, 2023 attacks.

The President’s post came shortly after a brief meeting aboard Air Force One in Doha with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Qatar has played a significant role in efforts to negotiate peace and ceasefires Gaza.

Following the meeting with Qatar Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Trump said “the Emir is one of the great rulers of the world… and the Prime Minister has been my friend”.

Trump later told reporters that the two discussed the Gaza peace deal during the stopover before continuing his trip to Asia.

Hamas has returned 15 of the 28 bodies of deceased hostages outlined in the US-proposed ceasefire agreement.

The terror group previously said it had handed over all of the remaining hostages it could access, and that “significant efforts and special equipment” are needed to recover more.

Israel is allowing an Egyptian team with tools and equipment to enter Gaza and assist in the efforts to locate the bodies of the deceased hostages, two Israeli security officials told CNN on Saturday.

Chargesheet produced in terror recruitment case: CIK

CIK carries out searches across 7 districts of Kashmir in terror case

Srinagar, Oct 25: The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) on Saturday produced a chargesheet in a terror recruitment case before the Court of Special Judge designated under the NIA Act, Srinagar.

A statement of CIK issued here said that chargesheet was presented in case FIR No 07/2023 under Section 153-A, 505, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 13, 18, 18-B, 39 of the UAPA of Police Station CIK Srinagar against terrorist associate Aadil Ahmad Khan, son of Ghulam Muhammad Khan of Drien Qazigund, Anantnag.

It said that the case pertains to a terror recruitment module being clandestinely operated through social media platforms, with the objective of radicalising and recruiting impressionable youth of J&K into the ranks of proscribed terrorist organisations, particularly those sponsored and controlled from across the border.

The statement said that the investigation was initiated on the basis of credible information that unscrupulous individuals and entities based in Pakistan, in connivance with terrorist handlers of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and other banned outfits, were using social media to lure Kashmiri youth and instigate them to wage war against the sovereignty and integrity of India.

It said that during the investigation, three accused persons were earlier found involved and charge sheeted before the court and were identified as Waseem Ahmad Sheikh, son of Ghulam Muhammad Sheikh of Kandoora Budgam; Junaid Ahmad Mir, son of late Abdul Jabbar Mir of Tikkipora Lolab; and Shabir Ahmad Gojri, son of Abdul Salam of Darbagh Harwan, Srinagar.

The statement also reads that further investigation uncovered the active role of accused Aadil Ahmad Khan, who had been operating a dedicated online recruitment network through Facebook and Twitter, disseminating secessionist, anti-national, and pro-terror content.

It said that his online activities were aimed at glorifying terrorism, promoting violent extremism, and motivating youth to join proscribed terrorist organisations.

The statement said that the investigation established that Aadil was actively aiding and abetting terrorist propaganda by sharing and amplifying digital content aligned with the agenda of Pakistan-based terror groups and their offshoots and front organisations.

It said that his online radicalisation efforts were coupled with ground-level facilitation of terror recruitment.

The statement said that the case was being investigated by CIK with a focus on identifying and dismantling the wider online terror ecosystem, including handlers, sympathisers, and digital facilitators operating from within and outside J&K.

The CIK officials said that more arrests and disclosures were expected as the investigation progresses.

Srinagar-Jammu National Highway open

Srinagar-Jammu National Highway open

Ramban, Oct 25: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open for two-way movement of Light Motor Vehicles (LLMVs) and one-way traffic of heavy vehicles heading towards Jammu on Saturday.

Traffic authorities said that the highway would remain open on Sunday for two-way traffic of LMVs between Jammu and Srinagar, while heavy vehicles would be allowed to move towards Kashmir after assessing road and traffic conditions.

The vehicular movement remained slow throughout Saturday due to single-lane stretches at several locations, the on-foot migration of nomadic families with their livestock towards Jammu for the winter season, and the breakdown of a few heavy vehicles between the Udhampur and Banihal sectors.

Officials monitoring traffic on the highway reported slow movement at Balli Nullah, Dewal, Samroli, Nashri, Dalwass, Maroog, and Kishtwari Pathar.

They said that after clearing Srinagar-bound heavy vehicles, Jammu-bound traffic would be allowed to proceed.

Late Saturday evening, traffic officials said vehicles were moving towards their respective destinations, albeit at a slow pace.

Authorities said that narrow road widths and ongoing maintenance work along several single-lane stretches, including Balli Nullah, Dewal, Samroli, Nashri, Dalwass, Maroog, and Kishtwari Pathar, continued to hamper the smooth flow of traffic.

Meanwhile, traffic authorities advised commuters and transporters to maintain lane discipline, avoid overtaking, and refrain from wrong-lane driving, warning that such violations could worsen congestion on the highway.

Travellers have been urged to check the latest traffic advisories from the Traffic Control Units in Jammu, Srinagar, Udhampur, and Ramban, or through the official social media handles of the J&K Traffic Department, before starting their journey on Sunday morning.
